The HITRAP project at GSI: trapping and cooling of highly-charged ions in a Penning trap

A decelerator will be installed at GSI in order to provide and study heavy nuclei without or with only few electrons at very low energies or even at rest. Highly-charged ions will be produced by stripping at relativistic energies. After electron cooling and deceleration in the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) the ions are ejected out of the storage ring at 4 MeV/u and further decelerated in a combination of linear accelerator structures operated in reverse. Finally, they are injected into a Penning trap where the ions are cooled to 4 K by electron cooling in combination with resistive cooling. From here, the ions can be transferred in a quasi DC or in a pulsed mode to different experimental setups. This article describes the technical concepts of this project focused on the Penning trap.

Carboxylation of styrene in the N(C4H9)4Br—heptane system

The carboxylation of styrene into carboxylic acids in the N(C₄H₉)₄Br—heptane system in the presence of phosphine complexes and palladium acetate was studied. In the absence of phosphine, the Pd catalyst seems to be stabilized in solution by forming anionic complexes with NBu₄Br; the stabilization depends on the acidity of the reaction medium. The catalytic system can be used repeatedly, its activity being reduced only slightly.__________Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. Dehydrogenation of propane on aluminoplatinum catalysts modified with Re,Zr, Sc,and Sn

The effect of addition of Re, Zr, Sc, and Sn on an aluminoplatinum catalyst in the reaction of dehydrogenation of propane was investigated. It was shown that addition of 0.2–0.5% Zr, Sc, or Re virtually does not alter the catalytic properties of the aluminoplatinum catalyst (APC); addition of 0.2% Sn increases the activity, selectivity, and stability of Pt/Al₂O₃. The amount of coke deposited on the APC after the first 5 min of work decreases by three times in the presence of Sn. Injection lasers in the 1.3–1.8 μm wavelength range

Conclusion There are developed techniques for the preparation of diode lasers in the 1.3 to 1.8 m range on the basis of quaternary epitaxial heterostructure. Devices for a particular wavelength of 1.3 m are now commercially available. The state of art in the laser studies with connection to lower room-temperature threshold and to higher operation temperature is illustrated in fig. 9. We feel that the laser system of InGaAsP, which is known since 1974 [1, 2], may be elaborated further for higher laser characteristics in spite of the fact that present state is quite acceptable for different applications. Nonlinear statics of extensible elastic belt on two pulleys

The drive belt set on two pulleys is considered as a plane elastic rod. The nonlinear theory of rods with tension is used. The static frictionless contact problem for the rod is formulated. The derived boundary value problem for the nonlinear ordinary differential equations is solved by the finite difference method and by the shooting method by means of computer mathematics. The belt shape and the stresses are determined. The contact reaction and the contact area are obtained in the solution. A benchmark study of extensible and inextensible models is performed.
