Quantum diffusion

Basic ideas and results which characterize quantum diffusion of defects in quantum crystals like solid helium as a new phenomenon are presented. Quantum effects in such media lead to a delocalization of point defects (vacancies, impurities etc.) and they turn into quasiparticles of a new type—defectons, which are characterized not by their position in the crystal lattice but by their quasimomentum and dispersion law. Defecton-defecton and defecton-phonon scattering are considered and an interpolation formula for the diffusion coefficient valid in all interesting temperature and concentration regions is presented. A comparison with the experimental data is made. Some alternative points of view are discussed in detail and the inconsistency of the Kisvarsanyi-Sullivan theory is shown.     

Synthesis and characterization of Mn-, La-Mn- and La-Ca-Mn-citrates as precursors for LaMnO<Subscript>3</Subscript> and La<Subscript>1−x</Subscript>Ca<Subscript>x</Subscript>MnO<Subscript>3</Subscript>

Mn-, LaMn- and LaCaMn-citrates were synthesized at 60–120°C in ethylene glycol medium using chlorides or nitrates as metal sources. Their composition, IR spectra and thermal decomposition were studied. Equimolar La/Mn ratio has been established in the complex, prepared from chloride solution with the same initial composition of the metals. In the isolated three-metallic complex the molar ratio of the metals deviates from the composition in the initial solution. The final products of the heating of Mn- and mixed-metal LaMn-citrates at 1000°C are phase-homogeneous Mn₃O₄ (hausmannite) and LaMnO₃ respectively. Parasitic phase(s) are observed in La_xCa_1−xMn_yO₃, produced from LaCaMn-citrate.     

A Preparative Method for Crosslinking Proteins to DNA in Nuclei by Single-pulse UV Laser Irradiation

Abstract— Photocrosslinking of proteins to DNA by single-pulse UV laser has been used only in analytical experiments, carried out with reconstituted complexes of a single DNA binding protein and a labeled target sequence. Here we propose a large-scale technique for irradiation of nuclei, generating preparative quantities of covalently linked protein-DNA complexes for further analysis of the partner molecules. The use of a flow cuvette allows a milligram of DNA in either nuclei or chromatin to be irradiated by a single pulse within few minutes. The efficiency of crosslinking varies from 6 to 12% of the total nuclear proteins. The presence of histones and other chromosomal proteins in the crosslinked protein-DNA complexes was demonstrated by using specific antibodies. The irradiation procedure can be fully automated using a microcomputer.     

Komplexe des Nickels mit p-Methylbenzamidoxim

Zusammenfassung Die Komplexbildung des p-Methylbenzamidoxims (pMB) mit Ni²⁺ wurde in neutraler und alkalischer Lösung spektrophotometrisch untersucht. In neutraler Lösung wird ein grüner Komplex 11 gebildet, dessen Bildungskonstante ₁=1,12 ist. In alkalischer Lösung werden zwei Komplexe (11 und 12) gebildet mit Bildungskonstanten ₁=4·10⁵ und ₂=0,2.

Nickel complexes with p-methyl benzamide oxime

The complex formation of p-methyl benzamidoxime with Ni²⁺ was studied spectrophotometrically in neutral and in alkaline solution. A green complex 11 is formed in neutral solution. Its formation constant is ₁=1.12. In alkaline solution two complexes (11 and 12) are formed. Their formation constants are ₁=4·10⁵ and ₂=0,2 resp.

Static Stark effect in the molecular ion HD+

We present preliminary results on the Stark effect of the hyperfine levels of the molecular ion HD⁺.     

2-Substituted thiazole-4-carboxamide derivatives as tiazofurin mimics: synthesis and in vitro antitumour activity

Tiazofurin analogues bearing a 5-hydroxymethyl-2-methyl-tetrahydrofuro[2,3-d][1,3]dioxol-6-ol moiety as a sugar mimic (2 and 3), and two novel thiazole-based acyclo-C-nucleosides 4 and 16 have been synthesized in multistep sequences starting from d-xylose (compounds 2 and 3) or from d-arabinose (compounds 4 and 16). All synthesized analogues showed potent in vitro antitumour activities against a panel of human tumour cell lines. Flow cytometry data suggest that cytotoxic effects of analogues 2–4 and 16 in the culture of K562 cells might be mediated by apoptosis. It was also found that these analogues induced changes in cell cycle distribution of K562 cells. Results of western blot analysis (upregulation of Bax and downregulation of Bcl-2, activation of caspase-3 and the presence of a PARP cleavage product) suggest that tiazofurin mimics (2–4 and 16) in K562 cells induced apoptosis in a caspase-dependent way.     

Surface Roughness Characterization of Poly(methylmethacrylate) Films with Immobilized Eu(III) β-Diketonates by Fractal Analysis

The structural complexity of the 3-D surface of poly(methylmethacrylate) films with immobilized europium β-diketonates was studied by atomic force microscopy and fractal analysis. Fractal analysis of surface roughness revealed that the 3-D surface has fractal geometry at the nanometer scale. Poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) as immobilization matrix is dense and uniform, and a tendency for formation of chain structures was observed. Fractal analysis can quantify key elements of 3-D surface roughness such as the fractal dimensions D _f determined by the morphological envelopes method of the Eu(DBM)₃ and Eu(DBM)₃ · dpp nanostructures, which are not taken into account by traditional surface statistical parameters.
