Sensitivity to differences in interaural correlation was measured for 1.3-ERB-wide bands of noise using a 2IFC task at six frequencies: 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1250, and 1500 Hz. The sensitivity index, d', was measured for discriminations between a number of fixed pairs of correlation values. Cumulative d' functions were derived for each frequency and condition. The d' for discriminating any two values of correlation may be recovered from the cumulative d' function by the difference between cumulative d's for these values. Two conditions were employed: the noisebands were either presented in isolation (narrow-band condition) or in the context of broad, contiguous flanking bands of correlated noise (fringed condition). The cumulative d' functions showed greater sensitivity to differences in correlation close to 1 than close to 0 at low frequencies, but this difference was less pronounced in the fringed condition. Also, a more linear relationship was observed when cumulative d' was plotted as a function of the equivalent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in dB for each correlation value, rather than directly against correlation. The equivalent SNR was the SNR at which the interaural correlation in an NoS(pi) stimulus would equal the interaural correlation of the noise used in the experiment. The maximum cumulative d' declined above 750 Hz. This decline was steeper for the fringed than for the narrow-band condition. For the narrow-band condition, the total cumulative d' was variable across listeners. All cumulative d' functions were closely fitted using a simple two-parameter function. The complete data sets, averaged across listeners, from the fringed and narrow-band conditions were fitted using functions to describe the changes in these parameters over frequency, in order to produce an interpolated family of curves that describe sensitivity at frequencies between those tested. These curves predict the spectra recovered by the binaural system when complex sounds, such as speech, are masked by noise.  相似文献

Many theoretical models of binaural interaction assume that sensitivity to interaural correlation underlies binaural unmasking. This paper explores the extent to which sensitivity to changes in interaural correlation implied by results from binaural detection experiments are consistent with sensitivity to changes in interaural correlation implied by results from binaural detection experiments are consistent with sensitivity to changes in interaural correlation measured directly in correlation discrimination experiments. The vehicle for this exploration is a simplified model of the underlying processes assumed by many models of binaural unmasking for the detection of narrow-band signals in the presence of broadband noise. Consideration is given to psychometric function slopes, detection thresholds, bandwidth effects, duration effects, level effects, and interaural-parameter effects. Although many of the results obtained from our analysis are consistent with the notion that the cue in binaural detection tasks is a change in interaural correlation, some significant inconsistencies are noted.  相似文献

Fluorophosphine bidentate ligands containing o-carborane as backbone can be prepared by the reaction of the lithium-o-carboranes and PF2X derivatives to give only two species: the unsymmetrical (C6H5)2P[B10H10C2]PF2 and the cyclic FP[B10H10C2]2PF, both in low yield. However, exchange of F and NMe2 groups by use of PF5 or PF3 provides a facile way to produce several new fluorophosphines.Phosphorus pentafluoride forms solid adducts with the o-phosphino derivatives (C6H5)2P[B10H10C2]P(NMe2)2, (Me2N)2P[B10H10C2]P(NMe2)2 and (C6H5)2P[B10H10C2]H. All the adducts contain a phosphorus-phosphorus bond as evidenced from i.r., NMR and stoichiometry. The stability of the adducts reflects the strength of the PP bond formed upon complexation. When suspensions or solutions of the adducts are heated they exchange F and NMe2 groups and no redox occurs. The products (C6H5)2P[B10H10C2]P(F)NMe2(I) and Me2N(F)P[B10H10C2]P(F)NMe2(II) react further with PF5 giving (C6H5)2P[B10H10C2]PF2(III) and F2P[B10H10C2]PF2(IV).The precursors also react with phosphorus trifluoride to produce only (I) and (Me2N)2P[B10H10C2]P(F)NMe2(V) regardless of the reaction conditions. All the products I–V have been identified by 1H, 19F, and 31P NMR and i.r. spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The NMR spectra of the novel (IV) have been analysed as X2AA1X12 spin system.  相似文献

The ability to make judgments about the stimulus at one ear when a stimulus is simultaneously presented to the other ear was tested. Specifically, subjects discriminated the level of a 600 Hz target tone presented at the left ear while an identical-frequency distractor was simultaneously presented at the other ear. When there was no distractor, threshold was 0.7 dB. Threshold increased to 1.1 dB when a distractor with a fixed phase and level was introduced contra-aurally to the target. Further increases in threshold were observed when an across-presentation variability was introduced into the distractor phase (threshold of 1.6 dB) or level (threshold of 5.8 dB). When both the distractor level and phase varied, the largest threshold of 7.3 dB was obtained. These increases in threshold cannot be predicted by common binaural models, which assume that a target stimulus at one ear can be processed without interference from the stimulus at the nontarget ear. The measured thresholds are consistent with a model that utilizes two binaural dimensions that roughly correspond to the loudness and the position of a fused binaural image. The results show that, with binaurally fused tonal stimuli, subjects are unable to listen to one ear.  相似文献

In many generic combustion models, one finds that a combustionwave will develop with a specific wave speed. However, thereare possible initial temperature profiles which do not evolveinto such waves, but rather die out to the ambient temperature.There can exist, in some models, a clear distinction betweenthose initial conditions that do evolve into combustion wavesand those that do not; this is sometimes referred to as thewatershed initial condition. When fuel consumption is consideredto be negligible, analytical methods can be used to obtain theexact watershed. In this paper, we consider the problem of determiningpseudo-watersheds and ascertaining the relationship betweenthese pseudo-watersheds and the exact watersheds. The response of the auditory nerve to electrical stimulation is highly sensitive to small modulations (<0.5%). This report demonstrates that dynamical instability (i.e., a positive Lyapunov exponent) can account for this sensitivity in a modified FitzHugh-Nagumo model of spike generation, so long as the input noise is not too large. This finding suggests both that spike generator instability is necessary to account for auditory nerve sensitivity and that the amplitude of physiological noise, such as that produced by the random behavior of voltage-gated sodium channels, is small. Based on these results with direct electrical stimulation, it is hypothesized that spike generator instability may be the mechanism that reconciles high sensitivity with the cross-fiber independence observed under acoustic stimulation.  相似文献

The investigation of crimes involving chemical or biological agents is infrequent, but presents unique analytical challenges. The protein toxin ricin is encountered more frequently than other agents and is found in the seeds of Ricinus communis, commonly known as the castor plant. Typically, the toxin is extracted from castor seeds utilizing a variety of different recipes that result in varying purity of the toxin. Moreover, these various purification steps can also leave or differentially remove a variety of exogenous and endogenous residual components with the toxin that may indicate the type and number of purification steps involved. We have applied three gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) based analytical methods to measure the variation in seed carbohydrates and castor oil ricinoleic acid, as well as the presence of solvents used for purification. These methods were applied to the same samples prepared using four previously identified toxin preparation methods, starting from four varieties of castor seeds. The individual data sets for seed carbohydrate profiles, ricinoleic acid, or acetone amount each provided information capable of differentiating different types of toxin preparations across seed types. However, the integration of the data sets using multivariate factor analysis provided a clear distinction of all samples based on the preparation method, independent of the seed source. In particular, the abundance of mannose, arabinose, fucose, ricinoleic acid, and acetone were shown to be important differentiating factors. These complementary tools provide a more confident determination of the method of toxin preparation than would be possible using a single analytical method.  相似文献
