Quadrupole moment of the 11(-) intruder isomer in 196Pb and its implications for the 16(-) shears band head

The quadrupole moment of the 11(-) isomer in 196Pb has been measured by the level mixing spectroscopy method. This state has a pi(3s(-2)(1/2)1h(9/2)1i(13/2))11(-) configuration which is involved in most of the shears band heads in the Pb region. The first directly measured value of Q(s)(11(-)) = (-)3.41(66) b, coupled to the previously known quadrupole moment of the nu(1i(-2)(13/2))12(+) isomer allows us to estimate the quadrupole moment of the 16(-) shears band head as Q(s)(16(-)) = -0.32(10) b. The experimental values are compared to tilted axis cranking calculations, giving insight into the validity of the additivity approach to couple quadrupole moments and on the amount of deformation in the shears bands.     

Differential inhibition of postnatal brain,spinal cord and body growth by a growth hormone antagonist

Background  

Growth hormone (GH) plays an incompletely understood role in the development of the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we use transgenic mice expressing a growth hormone antagonist (GHA) to explore the role of GH in regulating postnatal brain, spinal cord and body growth into adulthood. The GHA transgene encodes a protein that inhibits the binding of GH to its receptor, specifically antagonizing the trophic effects of endogenous GH.     

Multiphonon vibrations at high angular momentum in 182 Os

Evidence is presented for multiphonon excitations based on a high-spin (25 Planck) intrinsic state in the deformed nucleus 182 Os. Angular momentum generation by this mode competes with collective rotation. The experimental data are compared with tilted-axis cranking calculations, supporting the vibrational interpretation. However, the lower experimental energies provide evidence that more complex interactions of states are playing a role.     

Evidence for an isomeric 3/2- state in 53Co

The fragmentation of a 550MeV/u primary beam of ⁵⁸Ni on a ⁹Be target has been used to measure time- and energy-correlated γ decays following the implantation of event-by-event discriminated secondary fragments into a ⁹Be stopper plate. A new isomeric γ decay with T _1/2 = 14( ) ns and E _γ = 646.2(2) keV is observed and attributed to the decay of the yrast 3/2^- state in ⁵³ ₂₇Co₂₆ . This short-lived isomeric state has been populated by means of nuclear reactions during the stopping process of the secondary fragments. The experimental findings are discussed in the framework of large-scale spherical shell model calculations in conjunction with isospin symmetry-breaking residual interactions for the A = 53 , T _z = ±1/2 mirror nuclei ⁵³Co and ⁵³Fe .     

Quadrupole and magnetic moment measurements on spin-aligned projectile fragments

The Level Mixing Resonance (LMR) technique allows to determine ground-state nuclear moments by measuring the spin-polarization of the betaddecay, and starting from an initially aligned ensemble of nuclei. Using this new technique, the ratio of the quadrupole frequency to the magnetic moment of the neutron rich¹⁸N ground state has been measured: $\nu _Q /\mu (^{18} N\underline {Mg} ) = 1328(33)$ kHz/n.m. In order to measure the nuclear moments independently, the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and LMR techniques will be combined.     

Transfer measurements for the Ti+Ni systems at near barrier energies

Large enhancements have been observed in the sub-barrier fusion cross sections for Ti+Ni systems in our previous studies. Coupled channel calculations incorporating couplings to 2⁺ and 3⁻ states failed to explain these enhancements completely. A possibilty of transfer channels contributing to the residual enhancements had been suggested. In order to investigate the role of relevant transfer channels, measurements of one- and two-nucleon transfer were carried out for ^46,48Ti+⁶¹Ni systems. The present paper gives the results of these studies.     

LEMS: application of the method to study the static quadrupole moment of the isomer in 179W

The method of the level mixing spectroscopy (LEMS) was applied for the first time for the study of the static quadrupole moments of high-K isomers in the A ≈ 180 mass region. Results from a preliminary experiment for the static quadrupole moment of the (750 ns) isomer in ¹⁷⁹W give a limit for its upper value Q < 7b, corresponding to a quadrupole deformation of β2< 0.343.

Spectroscopic quadrupole moments of high-spin isomers in 193 Pb

The quadrupole interaction of high-spin isomers in ¹⁹³Pb implanted into solid Hg cooled at a temperature T = 170 K has been investigated by the time-differential perturbed -ray angular-distribution method. Spectroscopic quadrupole moment values of eb and 0.45(4) eb have been deduced for the 21/2^- and 33/2 ⁺ three-neutron states, respectively.
