Sub-critical crack growth rate of soda-lime-silicate glass and less brittle glass as a function of fictive temperature

Sub-critical crack growth rates of soda-lime-silicate glass and less brittle glass with different fictive temperatures were compared using the DCDC method under both dry and humid atmospheres in order to investigate the origin of the unique mechanical features of the less brittle glass developed by Ito and his collaborators. In both dry and humid atmospheres, the crack velocity of the soda-lime-silicate glass was slower than that of the less brittle glass. For both glasses, the glass sample with higher fictive temperature showed a slower crack growth rate under both dry and humid atmospheres. These observations can be explained by the tendency for the plastic flow at the crack tip; the soda-lime-silicate glass is expected to show easier plastic flow under tension than the less brittle glass, and also the samples with higher fictive temperatures are expected to show easier plastic flow, leading to greater fracture toughness, K_IC, and slower crack growth rate.     

Properties of holomorphic Wiener functions —skeleton,contraction, and local Taylor expansion

Summary We show that each holomorphic Wiener function has a skeleton which is intrinsic from several viewpoints. Synthesis and orientation study of a magnetically aligned liquid‐crystalline chitin/poly(acrylic acid) composite

A high magnetic field of 5 T was used to fabricate a magnetically aligned, optically anisotropic, liquid‐crystalline chitin/poly(acrylic acid) composite. The aligned mesophase was fixed by photoinitiated free‐radical polymerization. From an examination of polarized optical micrographs and an X‐ray diffraction study, a high degree of orientation of 0.70 was observed for the composite with a higher liquid‐crystalline chitin concentration (10.70 wt %); the orientation was reduced with a decreased chitin concentration at a given acrylic acid concentration. The X‐ray data for the developed composite showed a uniplanar orientation for the chitin crystallites, with its molecular long axes perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Inductively-coupled plasma/atomic emission spectrometry of sulfur with a vacuum scanning spectrometer and its application to the analysis of coal liquefaction catalysts

Inductively-coupled plasma/atomic emission spectrometry with a high-resolution vacuum scanning monochromator is described for the determination of sulfur at 180.734 nm. The behavior of the signal-to-background ratio is investigated as functions of RF power, argon gas flow rate and observation height above the load coil. Under the operating conditions selected, the detection limit is 3 μg l^?1. The Se I 196.090-nm line is chosen as internal standard, because the S/Se line pair exhibited the least change with carrier gas flow rate and acid concentration of solution. Sulfur in NiMo and CoMo/ Al₂O₃ catalysts used for coal liquefaction is determined as S(II) and S(VI) species. The total amount of the species agreed well with the sulfur value obtained by the conventinal combustion method.     

Thermodynamic Insight into the Origin of a Calix[n]arene-[60]fullerene Interaction and its Application to a Porphyrin-[60]fullerene Energy Transfer System

The calixarene-fullerene interaction,which causes only a slight change in the absorptionspectra, has been substantiated by calorimetricmeasurements: the H° values arecomparable with those obtained from the associationconstants estimated by a spectroscopic method. Furthermore, we determined the association constantbetween homooxacalix[3]arene and [60]fullerenederivatives with a porphyrin moiety by fluorescencespectra.     

First artificial receptors and chemosensors toward phosphorylated peptide in aqueous solution

The first fluorescent chemosensors toward a native phosphorylated peptide are successfully synthesized. Dinuclear zinc(II)-dipicolylamine-based anthracene (1, 2) can selectively recognize and sense phosphorylated species with an increase in the fluorescence intensity. We also demonstrated that these artificial receptors fluorometrically detect a phosphorylated peptide with high affinity (>107 M-1) in aqueous solution.
