Isolation of pure (2S,1'S,2'S)-2-(2'-carboxycyclopropyl)glycine from Blighia sapida (Akee)

The isolation of (2S,1'S,2'S)-2-(2'-carboxycyclopropyl)glycine (CCG I, 2) from Blighia sapida (Akee) was achieved through column chromatography on deactivated silica gel followed by ion-exchange chromatography. A HPLC method has also been devised in order to assess the purity of the isolated product.     

Incomplete blowup of solutions of quasilinear hyperbolic balance laws

We study incomplete blowup of entropy solutions to first-order quasilinear hyperbolic balance laws. A general procedure to continue solutions beyond the blowup time, which makes use of monotonicity methods, is given. The continuations thus obtained are possibly unbounded and satisfy suitable generalized entropy and Rankine-Hugoniot conditions. Then the uniqueness of continuations satisfying such conditions is proved.     

Evaluation of the enantiomeric selectivity in the chiral ligand-exchange chromatography of amino acids by a computational model

The chromatographic resolution of enantiomeric amino acids is accomplished on a reversed phase column using aqueous mobile phase containing the chiral reagent N,N-dimethyl-S-phenylalanine-Cu(II). The separation is a result of the whole interaction between the diastereomeric complex surface and the mixed stationary phase realized by the dynamic coating of the RP-18 carbon chains layer. The elution order seems to be related to the different water coordination capability on copper ion in the formation of the mixed ternary complexes.     

Dominant Factors Affecting the Chromatographic Behaviour of Bile Acids

With the aim of optimizing the chromatographic process by avoiding any preliminary derivatizing step, we examined the chromatographic behaviour of a selected set of unconjugated bile acids looking at the dominant factors that affect the performances of three different stationary phases: RP-8, RP-18 and RP-18 Base Deactivated (RP-18-BD). Accordingly to its structural peculiarity, the RP-18-BD column combined with a specific mobile phase has proved to be the most suitable one, in enhancing both separation factor α and resolution R _S within the selected set of analytes. Pronounced changes in the chromatographic profiles by only slightly changing the mobile phase composition (pH, buffer concentration, percentage and kind of organic modifier) prompted us to achieve satisfactory results in the separation and resolution of the selected set of bile acids.Presented at: CE in the Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Industries: 7th symposium on the practical applications for the analysis of proteins, nucleotides and small molecules, Montreal, Canada, August 12–16, 2005.An erratum to this article can be found at     

Amorphous Aggregation of Amyloid Beta 1‐40 Peptide in Confined Space

The amorphous aggregation of Aβ1‐40 peptide is addressed by using micromolding in capillaries. Both the morphology and the size of the aggregates are modulated by changing the contact angle of the sub‐micrometric channel walls. Upon decreasing the hydrophilicity of the channels, the aggregates change their morphology from small aligned drops to discontinuous lines, thereby keeping their amorphous structure. Aβ1‐40 fibrils are observed at high contact angles.     

Symbolic Computation of Newton Sum Rules for the Zeros of Polynomial Eigenfunctions of Linear Differential Operators

A symbolic algorithm based on the generalized Lucas polynomials of first kind is used in order to compute the Newton sum rules for the zeros of polynomial eigenfunctions of linear differential operators with polynomial coefficients.
