Thomson scattering of high-power laser and electron beams is a good test of electrodynamics in the high-field region. We demonstrated production of high-intensity X-rays in the head-on collision of a CO2 laser and 60-MeV electron beams at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Accelerator Test Facility. The energy of an X-ray photon was limited at 6.5 keV in the linear (lowest order) Thomson scattering, but the nonlinear (higher order) process produces higher energy X-rays. We measured the angular distribution of the high-energy X-rays and confirmed that it agrees with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

A three-dimensional examination of blood vessels is provided using MR data from seven cases. The vascular surfaces are constructed with an algorithm that automatically follows the selected artery or vein and generates a projected three-dimensional gradient shaded image. Fast 3DFT pulse sequences were optimized to enhance the time-of-flight contrast of the intravascular region. By increasing the surface threshold value in a three-dimensional head study, the flesh of a patient's face was peeled away to demonstrate the superfacial temporal artery. Gated cardiac images show the great vessels and cardiac chambers. A three-dimensional view of the aorta shows an irregular surface in the vicinity of an adrenal tumor. 3D MR exams provide a non-invasive technique for assessing vascular morphology in a clinical setting.  相似文献

The chemical composition of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) hydrogels was found to have a profound effect on the physical properties of gels. Hyaluronan (HA) and chondroitin sulfate (CS) were each modified with adipic dihydrazide (ADH) with carbodiimide chemistry. The resulting polymer was crosslinked with various concentrations of poly(ethylene glycol) dialdehyde (PEG‐diald) to produce a series of hydrogels. The physical properties of these GAG hydrogels varied in a concentration‐dependent fashion. Maximal crosslinking was observed at a theoretical crosslinking of 50% for the HA‐ADH‐PEG‐diald hydrogels and 75% for the CS‐ADH‐PEG‐diald hydrogels. Adding PEG‐diald beyond the optimum for crosslinking prolonged the in vitro enzymatic degradation time of the hydrogels. The swelling of the crosslinked GAG hydrogels was correlated with the amount of PEG‐diald used rather than with the crosslinking density. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An anomalous modulation in the wavelength spectrum has been observed in lasers with spot-size converters. This intensity modulation is shown to be caused by beating between the fundamental lasing mode and radiation modes in the taper. This results in a periodic modulation in the net gain spectrum, which causes wavelength jumps between adjacent net gain maxima, and a drive current dependent spectral width that is expected to affect system performance. The amplitude of this spectral modulation is reduced significantly by either using an angled rear-facet which reflects the beating radiation modes away from the laser axis, or by using a nonlinear, adiabatic taper.  相似文献

We prove both geometric ergodicity and regular variation of the stationary distribution for a class of nonlinear stochastic recursions that includes nonlinear AR-ARCH models of order 1. The Lyapounov exponent for the model, the index of regular variation and the spectral measure for the regular variation all are characterized by a simple two-state Markov chain.  相似文献

A method for calculating the number of rotamers of a linear alkane and of the number of rotamers with a given number of gauche conformations along the chain as a function of the total number of atoms in the chain, using general equations, is presented. A graphical method for generating individual rotamers was applied to the homologs up to decane, which has 1134 rotamers. The steric energies calculated by molecular mechanics (MM2 force field) were used as measures of the heat of formation for the coiled conformations relative to the anti conformer for each molecule, whereas the statistical entropy differences were calculated for classes of coiled rotamers grouped by the number of gauche bonds and steric energy. The free energy values calculated from these components show that already at 400 K hexane exists preferentially in conformations containing gauche bonds. For larger chains the free energy advantage for the coiled chains increases very steeply. The implications for the question of reactions of linear alkanes occurring on the surface or inside the channels of small- and medium-pore zeolites are briefly examined.  相似文献

The effect of incorporating an empty external cavity into the feedback loop of a mode-locked laser is investigated. Particular attention is paid to the response of the mode-locking as the external cavity is detuned by a fraction of a wavelength from the round trip transit time associated with the laser. The results for two regimes of operation are presented. In the first case a series of short lived transients develop whereas the other case leads to a persistent intermittent Q-switching scenario, where mode-locking fails. The role of coupling between the cavities and the laser's memory time in relation to the results is discussed. A mechanism for the improved mode-locking observed with non-linear external cavities is suggested.  相似文献

The liquid chromatographic analysis of drugs in urine through direct injection without any sample pretreatment was extended to micellar chromatography with nonionic surfactants, the Pinkerton ISRP column and the shielded hydrophobic phase (Hisep) column. The feasibility of using each was demonstrated through the determination of the diuretic, hydrochlorothiazide, in urine. Good separation, recovery, precision and linearity, and adequate limits of detection were obtained for this analysis with all three techniques. The advantages and limitations of the mobile phase approach of micellar chromatography and the two stationary phase approaches are discussed for the direct injection of urine as well as other biological fluids.  相似文献
