On universal subsets of Banach spaces

Photoinitiators with functional groups. VII. Covalently bonded camphorquinone—amines

Camphorquinone (CQ), a widely used photoinitiator (PI) in dental applications, was covalently bonded to aromatic amines to enhance the rate of electron and proton transfer effect due to the close vicinity of the diketone and the amine group. 10‐bromocamphorquinone and 10‐bromomethylcamphorquinone were selected as suitable precursors for esterification with the carboxyl group containing aromatic amines based on 4‐dimethylaminobenzoic acid. Properties of the new photoinitiating systems were investigated by UV spectroscopy and differential scanning photocalorimetry in lauryl acrylate. Compared to physical mixtures, in all cases similar or even better performance was obtained. Surprisingly, 10‐acetyl derivatives 7 – 9 and 18 especially, were found to be highly reactive. Compared to CQ/ethyl 4‐dimethylaminobenzoate, the rate of photopolymerization was increased by a factor of up to 2. Intramolecular reaction was confirmed by photo‐differential scanning calorimetry experiments with varying PI concentrations. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Structure of water: Short-ranged versus long-ranged forces

By transforming a realistic water-water potential separately into long-ranged and short-ranged systems and using computer simulations it is shown that the structure of water is determined primarily by short-ranged (both repulsive and attractive) forces. An extended primitive model of water is then shown to provide both the spatial and orientational arrangement of water molecules in the liquid phase in semi-quantitative agreement with diffraction experiments. Practical importance of this finding is exemplified by formulating a perturbation expansion about the primitive model reference and its individual steps are analyzed with respect to their implementation. The monomial ideal of a finite meet-semilattice

Squarefree monomial ideals arising from finite meet-semilattices and their free resolutions are studied. For the squarefree monomial ideals corresponding to poset ideals in a distributive lattice, the Alexander dual is computed.

     

A note on a theorem of Raubenheimer and Rode

We prove the converse of Raubenheimer and Rode's Banach algebra version of the Perron-Frobenius Theorem.

     

New olefinic functionalized disilanes. Synthesis and NMR spectroscopical investigations

The new olefinic substituted aminodisilanes, which are obtained from the reaction of organometallic reagents with aminochlorodisilanes, are converted into the chlorodisilanes by equilibration reactions or treatment with HCI. The resulting olefinic functionalized disilanes are identified by means of ²⁹Si, ¹³C, ¹H NMR and GC MS measurements.     

The G/M/1 queue revisited

The G/M/1 queue is one of the classical models of queueing theory. The goal of this paper is two-fold: (a) To introduce new derivations of some well-known results, and (b) to present some new results for the G/M/1 queue and its variants. In particular, we pay attention to the G/M/1 queue with a set-up time at the start of each busy period, and the G/M/1 queue with exceptional first service. Dedicated to Arie Hordijk on his 65th birthday, in friendship and admiration.     

Multilayers as defect barriers

A multilayer structure consisting of undoped GaAs and AlAs layers was incorporated into a buffer layer on GaAs substrates. This reduces the spreading of impurities from the substrate (e.g. tellurium) into layers deposited on top of the multilayer system as observed by SIMS and C/V profiling. Incorporation coefficients for tellurium in GaAs, AlAs and multilayers were calculated.     

Dimensional reduction for Helmholtz's equation on a bounded domain

Summary. The dimensional reduction method for solving boundary value problems of Helmholtz's equation in domain by replacing them with systems of equations in dimensional space are investigated. It is proved that the existence and uniqueness for the exact solution and the dimensionally reduced solution of the boundary value problem if the input data on the faces are in some class of functions. In addition, the difference between and in is estimated as and are fixed. Finally, some numerical experiments in a domain are given in order to compare theretical results.
