Continuum Approaches in the Mechanics of Curved Composites and Associated Problems for Structural Members

A review is made of studies on the mechanics of curved composites carried out using continuum approaches. The relevant theory, problem formulations, and solution methods are considered and some typical results on the influence of structural distortion on the mechanical behavior of composites are analyzed. Subjects for near-term studies are proposed     

On Publications on the Brittle Fracture Mechanics of Prestressed Materials

The paper analyzes new publications on the brittle fracture mechanics of prestressed materials. It is found out that new scientific results published in the International Journal of Solids and Structures in 2002 are a particular case of the results obtained at the Institute of Mechanics 20 years ago     

Practical and highly selective oxazolidinethione-based asymmetric acetate aldol reactions with aliphatic aldehydes

[reaction: see text] The utility of a valine-derived oxazolidinethione for auxiliary-based asymmetric acetate aldol reactions is reported. Titanium(IV) chloride, along with (-)-sparteine and N-methylpyrrolidinone, is employed for enolization. Subsequent aldol reaction with aliphatic aldehydes occurs with high diastereoselectivity (from 92:8 to 99:1 dr).

On two models in the three-dimensional theory of stability of composites

A comparative analysis is made of the infinite-fiber and finite-fiber models in the three-dimensional theory of stability of composites. The results analyzed have been obtained using the three-dimensional linearized theory of stability of deformable bodies. Stress Concentration Near Openings in Composite Shells

The results of studying the stress–strain distribution in composite shells with curvilinear openings are reported. Nonclassical generalizing formulations and methods for solution of linear and nonlinear problems are stated. Numerical results obtained for thin and nonthin shells are analyzed with regard for features of the deformation of composites     

Plane Problem of Three-Dimensional Stability of a Cracked Plate

A plane stability problem for an isotropic plate with a central crack is solved exactly. The plate is hinged and compressed along the crack by a surface load of constant intensity. An approximate solution is found using the mesh approach. The effect of the mechanical and geometric characteristics of the plate on the behavior of the critical factors is studied     

On physically incorrect results in fracture mechanics

The problem of physically incorrect results due to neglecting the interaction of the crack edges in fracture mechanics is discussed. The cases of dynamic loading, interface cracks, and thermal loading in fracture mechanics are analyzed. The main conclusion is that the majority of results obtained in these areas of fracture mechanics are physically incorrect
