Initial State Interaction in the (π+,3p) Reaction on N, Ar and Xe

The pion absorption reaction (π^{+,3 p} ) on Ar was studied at pion energies of 70, 118, 162 and 239 MeV, and on N and Xe at 239 MeV. The 3p cross section with a 50 MeV cut on the missing energy is presented. The existence of an initial state interaction (ISI) component to the reaction was investigated. The portion of the 3p cross section assigned to the ISI process is less than one half and at lower energies significantly so. Received: 11 December 1997

Some fixed-points theorems for multi-valued mappings in topological vector spaces

Measurement of the spin parameters A and Ann in pp elastic scattering in the 1–3 GeV/c region

We have measured the asymmetry parameter A and the spin correlation parameter A_nn in pp elastic scattering, using the Argonne ZGS polarized proton beam and a polarized proton target. Angular distributions of A and A_nn for |t| ? 0.2 (GeV/c)²wereobtainedateightmomentabetween 1.10 and 2if2.75 GeV/c. We find significant structure in both the energy and t-dependence of A_nn at these energies. At p_lab ≈ 1.34 GeV/cA_nn reaches a very large value of about 0.8–0.9 near θ_cm = 90°.     

Global bifurcation of fixed points and the Poincaré translation operator on manifolds

Let M be a differentiable manifold and [0, )×MM be a C¹ map satisfying the condition (0, p)=p for all pM. Among other results, we prove that when the degree (also called Hopf index or Euler characteristic) of the tangent vector field wMTM, given by w(p)=(/)(0, p), is well defined and nonzero, then the set (of nontrivial pairs) admits a connected subset whose closure is not compact and meets the slice {0}×M of [0, )×M. This extends known results regarding the existence of harmonic solutions of periodic ordinary differential equations on manifolds.     

Raman Analysis of Polymerization of APST Molecule

In this work we investigated the solidification of aminopropylsilanetriol dissolved in water (∼25%) under different conditions by Raman spectroscopy. The solidification was carried out at three different temperatures 8 °C, 23 °C and 60 °C. The influence of electromagnetic radiation on the polymerization process was also studied. Samples were held to solidify in dark and at UV (254 nm and 356nm) spectral range. In order to investigate the influence of the substrate on the resulting polymer structure, teflon, PVC, glass, brass and silica were used. Best ordered polymerized structure was achieved for samples deposited on plastics and solidified in dark, at room temperature.     

Topological methods for the global controllability of nonlinear systems

Sufficient conditions for the local and global controllability of general nonlinear systems, by means of controls belonging to a fixed finite-dimensional subspace of the space of all admissible controls, are established with the aid of topological methods, such as homotopy invariance principles. Some applications to certain classes of nonlinear control processes are given, and various known results on the controllability of perturbed linear systems are also derived as particular cases.     

Search for emission of nucleons and nucleon pairs following muon capture in selected light nuclei

Preliminary results of measurements of proton energy spectra and search for coincidentp, n pair emission following negative muon capture in¹²C,¹⁶O,²⁷Al are given.
