This study deals with boundary layer flow along the entire length of a stationary semi-infinite cylinder under a steady, accelerated free-stream. Considering flow at reduced dimensions, the no-slip boundary condition is replaced with a Navier boundary condition. Asymptotic series solutions are obtained for the shear stress coefficient in terms of the Bingham number that corresponds to prescribed values of both the slip coefficient and the index of acceleration. By investigating motion at small and large axial distances, the series solutions are presented. For flow in the intermediate distances, exact and interpolated numerical solutions are obtained. Using these results, the shear stress along the entire cylinder wall is evaluated in terms of the parameters of acceleration and slip.  相似文献

Anecdotal evidence in man suggests that abuse of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) is linked with increased aggression. In order to test the hypothesis that administration of nortestosterone (beta-NT) esters may increase aggression, behavioural effects following beta-NT phenylpropionate (NTPP) administration were assessed in male mice using the isolation-induced aggression paradigm. Mice (n = 80) were individually caged and randomly assigned to 'resident' or 'intruder' status. Residents received one of four treatments: subcutaneous (s/c) injection of oil of arachis (OILINJ), s/c injection of NTPP in oil of arachis (NTINJ), oil of arachis per os (OILOS) and NTPP in oil of arachis per os (NTOS). After treatment, weight-matched intruders were introduced into each resident's cage and the encounter was videotaped to allow the frequency (f) and duration (d) of social, non-social, offensive and defensive behaviours displayed by residents and intruders to be measured. The latency of bite attack for residents was significantly shorter in NTOS compared to OILOS. There was no difference in either f or d of aggressive behaviours between NTINJ and OILINJ. Because OILINJ residents demonstrated similar levels of aggression to NTOS, it is possible that the aggression in NTOS mice may be mediated by a different biochemical pathway. Extrapolation of these results indicate that ingestion of beta-NT esters may have a role in the induction of aggression in consumers.  相似文献

We have studied p H-dependent conformational transitions of Bovine Serum Albumin adsorbed onto different sizes of gold nanospheres. For larger spheres (D > 10 nm) there is evidence for a path-dependent extended state near p H 4, over a very small p H range. For smaller nanospheres (5nm and 10nm) the evidence for such a transition is either much weaker or completely suppressed. We suggest that the absence of the transition on small spheres is due to the fact that the protein adsorbed on such small spheres has already lost at least some of its tertiary structure. The results have important implications for the functionality of proteins adsorbed onto nanospheres or surfaces with nm scale roughness.  相似文献

This work deals with the propagation of a disturbance acting on a fibre in the melt-spinning process, where molten polymer is ejected vertically downwards from an orifice before being drawn onto a wind-up spool. The disturbance may be produced by a sudden horizontal draught of air impinging on a part of the fibre. The flow is modeled as a wave propagating on a moving string under the influence of damping and variable tension. The amplitude of the disturbance is obtained in closed-form along the characteristics which emanate from the boundaries of the localised initial disturbance; the general solution of the damped disturbance is determined numerically. An important aspect of the model is the ability to predict the magnitude of this disturbance close to the orifice, where the extruded polymer is molten and therefore extremely sensitive to disturbances. Asymptotic series solutions are obtained for the heat transfer coefficient in terms of the Nusselt number. These solutions correspond to prescribed values of the momentum and temperature slip coefficients and the index of acceleration. Heat transfer at both small and large axial distances is determined in the form of series solutions; whereas at intermediate distances, exact and interpolated numerical solutions are obtained. A simplified model of a marine mussel is proposed. We model the digestive system as a cellular analogue, physically partitioned into a lysosome and endosome, with the flow of particulate carbon to represent energy. The parameters in the rate equations that govern the interactions between compartments are assumed to be a simple linear form but are consistent with experiment and observation. The model is tested first by using continuous feeding and then by using a periodic feeding representative of tidal input. The responses in both cases produce interesting results compatible with observations of the biology of the animal. We define a “health function” which indicates whether or not the animal survives. It is found that survival is critically dependent on lysosomal efficiency.  相似文献
