Temperature dependence of the exafs spectrum in YBa2Cu3O7−δ compounds

The temperature dependence of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) is studied in the high T_c superconductors, YBa₂Cu₃O_7−δ. The measurements were done at the Cu K-edge for samples of two orthorhombic phases (T_c≈90 K and ≈58 K, respectively) and a nonsuperconducting tetragonal phase. Interatomic distances and mean square relative displacements σ² for Cu-O bonds are determined by the least squares refinement. The results indicate that values of σ² increase near T_c for both the orthorhombic samples. It is concluded that this anomalous behavior related to T_c is caused by an anomalous vibration of oxygen atoms in the Ba-O layer. Changes in the Cu-O distances from 300 to 20 K are not found.     

Direct determination of benzamides in serum by column-switching high-performance liquid chromatography.

A column-switching high-performance liquid chromatographic method with fluorescence detection was developed for the simultaneous determination of four benzamide-type anti-psychotic drugs: sulpiride, tiapride, sultopride and metoclopramide in human serum. In this method, a TSKgel Super-ODS column was used as an analytical column, and a TSKgel G 2000SW was prepared as a pretreatment column. Under the optimized analytical conditions, four benzamide-type anti-psychotic drugs were eluted within 18 min. The detection limits (S/N = 3) for sulpiride, tiapride, sultopride and metoclopramide are 1 ng/ml, 4 ng/ml, 2 ng/ml and 0.5 ng/ml, respectively. Finally, the method was applied to the determination of sulpiride in human serum samples obtained after a single oral dose of sulpiride.     

Design of a widely tunable laser with a chirped ladder filter

We theoretically investigated a digitally tunable laser with a chirped ladder filter and a ring resonator to obtain a wide wavelength tuning range covering the whole C- or L- band. The clear relation between the tuning range and laser structure, especially the ladder filter, is described analytically. The introduction of a chirped structure into a ladder filter is effective in achieving both wide tunability and a stable lasing mode. A numerical simulation based on multimode rate equations shows that a tuning range of over 40 nm and a mode suppression ratio over 40 dB can be achieved by introducing a chirped ladder filter.     

Stein's idea and minimax admissible estimation of a multivariate normal mean

We consider estimation of a multivariate normal mean vector under sum of squared error loss.We propose a new class of minimax admissible estimator which are generalized Bayes with respect to a prior distribution which is a mixture of a point prior at the origin and a continuous hierarchical type prior. We also study conditions under which these generalized Bayes minimax estimators improve on the James–Stein estimator and on the positive-part James–Stein estimator.     

Basic study of the gelation of dimethacrylate‐type crosslinking agents

An investigation was made of the gelation of dimethacrylate‐type crosslinking agents in view of an application for separation media. The study mainly centered on a crosslinking agent, glycerol dimethacrylate (GDMA), which is relatively hydrophilic because of a hydroxyl group in the middle of its structure. The gelation of GDMA was compared with that of other hydrophobic crosslinking agents such as ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and 1,6‐hexanediol dimethacrylate. The diluents used in the study were toluene, toluene with methanol, and cyclohexanol. The gelation was observed in real time with a charge coupled device camera and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Also, the separated dry gels were extensively characterized with scanning electron microscopy, BET (N₂ absorption and desorption isotherm), and Fourier transform infrared. DLS analysis showed a stronger molecular interaction of GDMA gelation in toluene, whereas this interaction was much weaker in an alcoholic solvent such as toluene with methanol or cyclohexanol. This indicated that GDMA gelation might proceed through hydrogen bonding as well as a crosslinking reaction of vinyl groups. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sensitivity and stability analysis for nonlinear programming

We give a brief overview of important results in several areas of sensitivity and stability analysis for nonlinear programming, focusing initially on qualitative characterizations (e.g., continuity, differentiability and convexity) of the optimal value function. Subsequent results concern quantitative measures, in particular optimal value and solution point parameter derivative calculations, algorithmic approximations, and bounds. Our treatment is far from exhaustive and concentrates on results that hold for smooth well-structured problems.Research supported by National Science Foundation Grant ECS-86-19859 and Grant N00014-89-J-1537 Office of Naval Research.     

Flexible inner and outer coordination of Zn(II) N-confused porphyrin complex

Tetra- and dinuclear Zn(II) N-confused porphyrin dimers (1, 2) and pyridine-coordinating Zn(II) monomer complex (3) were synthesized, and the ditopic, inner and outer coordination of Zn metal in the dimer complex (1) was demonstrated by X-ray analyses.     

17O NMR chemical shifts versus structure relationships in oxiranes

Natural-abundance ¹⁷O NMR spectra have been measured for twenty one oxiranes. Their chemical shifts covering a 100 ppm range were interpreted in terms of the paramagnetic β- and diamagnetic γ-effects. In addition, through-space orbital interaction between the ethylenic π and the Walsh orbitals of the oxirane ring was suggested by a lowfield shift in norbornadiene $\text{exo}$-oxide.     

Cyclopolymerization of diallylamine derivatives in dimethyl sulfoxide

Diallyl quaternary ammonium chlorides, bromides and N-alkyldiallylamine hydrochlorides were polymerized with ammonium persulfate (APS) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The dependences of yield and molecular weight of polymers on polymerization conditions were examined and quaternary ammonium chlorides were found to have better polymerizability than bromides. The poly(diallyl quaternary ammonium chlorides) obtained with APS—DMSO system are expected to have quite high molecular weights, as determined from the measurement of limiting viscosity numbers of the polymers in NaCl aqueous solution.     

Synthesis and properties of rhenium tricarbonyl complex bearing N-fused tetraphenylporphyrin ligand

An N-fused porphyrin rhenium complex was synthesized by the thermal reaction of an N-confused porphyrin with Re2(CO)10 and its structure was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis.
