Synthesis of new axially dissymmetric ligand with large perfluoroalkyl groups

A new axially dissymmetric ligand with large perfluoroalkyl groups, 2,2′-bis(1-hydroxy-1H-perfluorooctyl)biphenyl (1c), which could not be obtained by the coupling reaction of the aryl bromide using copper powder, was synthesized successfully by the coupling reaction using Ni(COD)₂. This ligand showed much higher asymmetric induction in the reaction of diethylzinc with benzaldehyde than the trifluoromethyl (1a) or pentafluoroethyl (1b) analogues.     

Cooling rate dependence of specific heat in systems out of equilibrium

The anomaly of specific heat in systems out of equilibrium, especially the measurement procedure dependence of specific heat, is investigated by means of free energy landscape. Introducing measurement procedure which is based on experimental method, we propose a calculation method of specific heat in systems out of equilibrium and find an abrupt change in specific heat between annealed and quenched states. For longer observation time the change in specific heat occurs at lower temperature and becomes sharper. For slower cooling of a system the transition temperature becomes lower. This cooling rate dependence of the transition temperature is consistent with experiments and thus the abrupt change in specific heat can be regarded as the glass transition which is thermally identified.     

The preparation and the nucleophilic reaction of 3,3-di(1-azolyl)-2-alken-1-ones,precursor of acetylketene derivatives

2-Alken-1-ones, 3,3-di-(1-azolyl)-2-alken-1-ones and related compounds were prepared by two methods. These compounds were found to be the useful precursors for acylketene derivatives such as ketene dithioacetals and diaminals by treatment with various nucleophiles.     

The catalytic Mannich reaction of 1,1-difluoro-2-trialkyl(aryl)silyl-2-trimethyl-silyloxyethenes: preparation of beta-amino acid derivatives

[reaction: see text] Catalytic Mannich reactions of 1,1-difluoro-2-trialkyl(aryl)silyl-2-trimethylsilyloxyethenes (3) with a variety of sulfonylimines were utilized for the preparation of alpha,alpha-difluoro-beta-amino acid derivatives (7). The influence of the Lewis acid on the reaction was examined. Methods for the conversion of alpha,alpha-difluoroacylsilanes to alpha,alpha-difluorocarboxylic acids were also explored.     

Ozonolysis of five-membered heterocycles

The relative reaction rate of five-membered heterocycles with ozone was evaluated. These relative rates were correlated to the highest bond order value in the corresponding ring, calculated by the convenient HMO method. From this correlation, the reactivity of heterocycles with ozone was able to be predicted. Also it was concluded that the predominant product in the ozonolysis of five-membered heterocycles containing an oxygen atom was the corresponding carboxylic acid, while nitrogen heterocycles gave the corresponding amide.     

Ni-catalyzed α-arylation of secondary α-bromo-α-fluoro-β-lactam: cross-coupling of a secondary fluorine-containing electrophile

A highly diastereoselective cross-coupling reaction of an α-bromo-α-fluoro-β-lactam with a wide range of aryl Grignard reagents was catalyzed by Ni/bis(oxazoline) in yields of up to 98%. The product was obtained diastereoselectively as an anti-isomer. This is the first successful α-arylation of an α-fluoro-β-lactam to produce diverse α-aryl-α-fluoro-β-lactams.     

Nonlinear Langevin equations and the time dependent density functional method

To study the time dependent density functional method (TDDFM), two streaming velocity (reversible) terms are reformulated in the nonlinear Langevin equation. Mori's [Prog. Theor. Phys. 33, 423 (1965)] projection operator method shows a variety of nonlinear Langevin equations. This is because the equations depend on the choice of phase space functions employed in the projection. If phase space functions include particular functions, however, the streaming velocity term has an invariable form. The form is independent of the choice of other phase space functions. Since the invariable streaming velocity term does not introduce the TDDFM, the second viewpoint is presented. In this, the linearization of the streaming velocity term agrees with the frequency term in the linear Langevin equation. Since only the second streaming velocity term introduces the TDDFM, one needs to be cautious in the derivation of the TDDFM.     

Noise-Limitations of Coherence Imaging Based on Wavefront Folding Interferometry

Noise-limitations of the coherence imaging system based on the wavefront folding interferometer are studied. The signal-to-noise ratio SNR in two kinds of noise-limiting cases, the photon-noise-limit and the detector-noise-limit, is derived and are compared with the experimental results. The experimental demonstration is conducted using a wavefront folding interferometer and a single slit that provides the light source. An ensemble of ten sets of data are measured under the same conditions and the statistics of the retrieved images are computed from them. It is verified that the experimental results generally agree with the theoretical expectations.     

A sensitive and quantitative technique for detecting autophagic events based on lysosomal delivery

We sought to develop a sensitive and quantitative technique capable of monitoring the entire flux of autophagy involving fusion of lysosomal membranes. We observed the accumulation inside lysosomal compartments of Keima, a coral-derived acid-stable fluorescent protein that emits different-colored signals at acidic and neutral pHs. The cumulative fluorescent readout can be used to quantify autophagy at a single time point. Remarkably, the technique led us to characterize an autophagy pathway in Atg5-deficient cells, in which conventional LC3-based autophagosome probes are ineffective. Due to the large Stokes shift of Keima, this autophagy probe can be visualized in conjunction with other green-emitting fluorophores. We examined mitophagy as a selective autophagic process; time-lapse imaging of mitochondria-targeted Keima and GFP-Parkin allowed us to observe simultaneously Parkin recruitment to and autophagic degradation of mitochondria after membrane depolarization.
