Fisher Information of Free-Electron Landau States

An electron in a constant magnetic field has energy levels, known as the Landau levels. One can obtain the corresponding radial wavefunction of free-electron Landau states in cylindrical polar coordinates. However, this system has not been explored so far in terms of an information-theoretical viewpoint. Here, we focus on Fisher information associated with these Landau states specified by the two quantum numbers. Fisher information provides a useful measure of the electronic structure in quantum systems, such as hydrogen-like atoms and under some potentials. By numerically evaluating the generalized Laguerre polynomials in the radial densities, we report that Fisher information increases linearly with the principal quantum number that specifies energy levels, but decreases monotonically with the azimuthal quantum number m. We also present relative Fisher information of the Landau states against the reference density with m=0, which is proportional to the principal quantum number. We compare it with the case when the lowest Landau level state is set as the reference.     

Synthesis and toxicity assay of ceramic nanophosphors for bioimaging with near-infrared excitation

Yttrium hydroxyl carbonate (Y(OH)CO₃) precursors were synthesized by the homogeneous co-precipitation method in the presence of polyacrylic acid (PAAc). Resultant precursor particle size is about 15–20 nm with narrow size distribution whereas the particle size is smaller than those acquired by the conventional homogeneous precipitation method. Effective decrease of Y(OH)CO₃ particle size was found to be higher for the presence of weak polyanionic ionomer such as PAAc than the presence of strong polyanionic ionomer such as sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS). It was observed that the morphology and size of the precursors are almost unchanged after the calcination process. Er³⁺ doped Y₂O₃ nanoparticles were synthesized by PAAc assisted homogeneous co-precipitation method showed bright green (550 nm) and red (660 nm) upconversion (UC) as well as near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence (1550 nm) under 980-nm excitation. UC and NIR fluorescence bioimaging and in-vitro cytotoxicity assay of Er³⁺ doped Y₂O₃ nanoparticles were successfully attempted with commercially available macrophages and B-cell hybridomas. Cellular uptake of nanoparticles is evidenced from bright field, UC and NIR fluorescence images of macrophages.     

Thermal and optical properties of highly fluorinated copolymers of methacrylates

Copolymers of pentafluorophenylhexafluoroisopropyl methacrylate (FPPMA) with trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) were prepared in THF solution and in bulk using azobisisobutyronitrile as a free radical initiator. The monomer reactivity ratios of TFEMA (M₁) and FPPMA (M₂) were calculated as r₁ = 0.55 and r₂ = 0.07. The refractive indices of poly(TFEMA) and poly(FPPMA) are very similar as 1.435 and 1.430, respectively, at 532 nm, and the copolymer films were transparent. The glass transition temperatures (T_g) of the copolymers were in the range of 80–90°C and showed a negative deviation from the Gordon–Taylor equation. The thermal decomposition temperature (T_d) was increased with the content of FPPMA in copolymers. Low water absorption for 1:1 FPPMA/TFEMA copolymer was detected. Copolymers of FPPMA with hexafluoroisopropyl methacrylate (HFPMA) were also prepared. The monomer reactivity ratios of HFPMA (M₁) and FPPMA (M₂) were calculated as r₁ = 0.43 and r₂ = 0.10. The T_gs of the copolymers were in the range of 88–95°C and showed also a negative deviation from the Gordon–Taylor equation. T_g and T_d of the copolymers were increased with the content of FPPMA. The refractive index of poly(HFPMA) (1.384 at 532 nm) is much lower than that of FPPMA homopolymer, but copolymer films obtained were clear and transparent. Rhodium-Catalyzed Highly Diastereo- and Enantioselective Synthesis of a Configurationally Stable S-Shaped Double Helicene-Like Molecule

An S-shaped double helicene-like molecule (>99 % ee), possessing stable helical chirality, has been synthesized by the rhodium(I)/difluorphos complex-catalyzed highly diastereo- and enantioselective intramolecular double [2+2+2] cycloaddition of a 2-naphthol- and benzene-linked hexayne. The collision between two terminal naphthalene rings destabilizes the helical chirality of the S-shaped double helicene-like molecule, but the introduction of two additional fused benzene rings significantly increases the configurational stability. Thus, no epimerization and racemization were observed even at 100 °C. The enantiopure S-shaped double helicene-like molecule forms a trimer through the multiple C−H⋅⋅⋅π and C−H⋅⋅⋅O interactions in the solid-state. The trimers stack to form columnar packing structures, in which neighboring stacks have opposite dipole directions. The accumulation of helical structures in the same direction in the S-shaped double helicene-like molecule enhanced the chiroptical properties.     

Grubbs carbene complex-catalyzed cleavage of allyl vic-diols to aldehydes with a co-oxidant: application to the selective cleavage of huge marine molecules

An oxidative cleavage of allyl vic-diols to aldehydes catalyzed by a Grubbs carbene complex using a co-oxidant has been established for the first time, with good yields. The utility of this selective cleavage reaction was demonstrated through the use of two huge marine molecules, symbiodinolide and N-p-BrBz palytoxin.     

Targeted Delivery using Immunoliposomes with a Lipid-Modified Antibody-Binding Protein

A recombinant antibody-binding protein originating from streptococcal protein G was modified with lipid in a site-directed manner by genetic engineering. The resulting lipoprotein was incorporated into the surface of liposomes by simple mixing. Immunoliposomes were then prepared by binding anti-IgG antibodies molecules onto the surface of proteoliposome via the lipid-anchored streptococcal protein G. Either small fluorophores or fluorescently labeled proteins were encapsulated into prepared immunoliposomes, and these molecular tracers could be delivered into cells whose surfaces were marked with specific antibodies.     

Excited‐State Dynamics of CS2 Studied by Photoelectron Imaging with a Time Resolution of 22 fs

The ultrafast dynamics of CS₂ in the ¹B₂(¹Σ_u⁺) state was studied by photoelectron imaging with a time resolution of 22 fs. The photoelectron signal intensity exhibited clear vibrational quantum beats due to wave packet motion. The signal intensity decayed with a lifetime of about 400 fs. This decay was preceded by a lag of around 30 fs, which was considered to correspond to the time for a vibrational wave packet to propagate from the Franck–Condon region to the region where predissociation occurred. The photoelectron angular distribution remained constant when the pump–probe delay time was varied. Consequently, variation of the electronic character caused by the vibrational wave packet motion was not identified within the accuracy of our measurements.
