Critical Behavior of Two Interacting Linear Polymer Chains in a Good Solvent

A model of two interacting (chemically different) linear polymer chains is solved exactly using the real-space renormalization group transformation on a family of Sierpinski gasket type fractals and on a truncated 4-simplex lattice. The members of the family of the Sierpinski gasket-type fractals are characterized by an integer scale factorb which runs from 2 to ∞. The Hausdorff dimensiond _F of these fractals tends to 2 from below asb → ∞. We calculate the contact exponenty for the transition from the State of segregation to a State in which the two chains are entangled forb = 2-5. Using arguments based on the finite-size scaling theory, we show that forb→∞, y = 2 - v(b) d _F, wherev is the end-toend distance exponent of a chain. For a truncated 4-simplex lattice it is shown that the system of two chains either remains in a State in which these chains are intermingled in such a way that they cannot be told apart, in the sense that the chemical difference between the polymer chains completely drop out of the thermodynamics of the system, or in a State in which they are either zipped or entangled. We show the region of existence of these different phases separated by tricritical lines. The value of the contact exponenty is calculated at the tricritical points.     

Protic acid (HClO4 supported on silica gel)-mediated synthesis of 2,3-unsaturated-O-glucosides and a chiral furan diol from 2,3-glycals

Perchloric acid supported on silica gel acts as an excellent reagent system in converting glucals into 2,3-unsaturated-O-glucosides in good to excellent yields in short reaction time with good alpha selectivity. Primary, secondary, and allylic alcohols, phenols, and thiols react with 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl glucal with equal ease. In addition to this, a chiral furan diol is obtained from unprotected D-glucal or D-galactal in good yields.     

Synthesis of conformationally constrained C-glycosyl alpha- and beta-amino acids and sugar-carbamino sugar hybrids via Diels-Alder reaction

[structure: see text] Sugar-derived dienes undergo Diels-Alder reactions with methyl alpha-nitro acrylate and ethyl beta-nitro acrylate to form the corresponding cycloadducts which have been converted into conformationally constrained C-glycosyl alpha- and beta-amino acids. Further, these beta-amino acids are converted into sugar-carbamino sugar hybrid molecules.     

Chemistry of 2-nitroglycals: a one-pot three-component stereoselective approach toward 2-C-branched O-galactosides

A convenient one-pot three-component approach for the synthesis of 2-C-branched O-glycosides has been developed from 2-nitroglycals. These 2-C-branched sugars have been shown to be precursors for a variety of biologically and synthetically relevant molecules.     

On the representation of the interaction energy between two polar molecules

Summary An attempt has been made to represent the interaction energy between two polar molecules by using an effective relative orientation of the pair of the colliding molecules. Calculations made for gaseous ammonia show fairly satisfactory results.     

HClO4 x SiO2 catalysed synthesis of alkyl 3-deoxy-hex-2-enopyranosides from 2-hydroxy glucal ester: application in the synthesis of a cis-fused bicyclic ether and a 4-amino-C-glucoside

A variety of alcohols react with 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-1,5-anhydro-D-arabino-hex-1-enopyranose 1 in the presence of a catalytic amount of HClO(4) supported on silica gel to give the corresponding alkyl 3-deoxy-hex-2-enopyranosides 2 in high yield, with short reaction times (10-45 mins) and good alpha-selectivity. Work-up merely involves filtration of the reagent, followed by chromatographic purification of the crude product. This methodology has also been employed in the synthesis of a bicyclic ether, a useful precursor for cyclic polyethers, and a 4-amino-C-glucoside.     

Pair correlation functions and a free energy functional for the nematic phase

In this paper we have presented the calculation of pair correlation functions in a nematic phase for a model of spherical particles with the long-range anisotropic interaction from the mean spherical approximation (MSA) and the Percus-Yevick (PY) integral equation theories. The results found from the MSA theory have been compared with those found analytically by Holovko and Sokolovska [J. Mol. Liq. 82, 161 (1999)]. A free energy functional which involves both the symmetry conserving and symmetry broken parts of the direct pair correlation function has been used to study the properties of the nematic phase. We have also examined the possibility of constructing a free energy functional with the direct pair correlation function which includes only the principal order parameter of the ordered phase and found that the resulting functional gives results that are in good agreement with the original functional. The isotropic-nematic transition has been located using the grand thermodynamic potential. The PY theory has been found to give a nematic phase with pair correlation function harmonic coefficients having all the desired features. In a nematic phase the harmonic coefficient of the total pair correlation function h(x1,x2) connected with the correlations of the director transverse fluctuations should develop a long-range tail. This feature has been found in both the MSA and PY theories.     

Quantification of Quetiapine in Human Plasma by LC–MS–MS

A rapid liquid chromatographic method with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometric detection has been developed and validated for quantification of quetiapine in heparinized human plasma. Plasma samples, without a drying and reconstitution step, were extracted by solid-phase extraction and eluted with acetonitrile. The analyte and zolpidem tartrate (internal standard, IS) were chromatographed on a C₁₈ column; the mobile phase was 85:15 (v/v) acetonitrile–5 mM ammonium formate, pH adjusted to 4.5 with formic acid, at a flow rate of 0.5 mL min⁻¹. The retention times of quetiapine and the IS were 1.25 and 1.05 min, respectively, and the run time was 1.8 min per sample. Selected reaction monitoring of MH⁺ at m/z 384.12 and 308.11 resulted in stable fragment ions with m/z 253.02 and 235.09 for quetiapine and the IS, respectively. Response was a linear function of concentration in the range 1.0–240.0 ng mL⁻¹, with r ≥ 0.9994. Recovery of quetiapine and the IS ranged from 74.82 to 85.57%. The assay has excellent characteristics and has been successfully used for analysis of quetiapine in healthy human subjects in a bioequivalence study.
