With the use of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy the structure and morphology of montmorillonite (MMT), a material of current interest for use in polymer nanocomposites, was characterized. Using both imaging theory and experiment, the procedures needed to generate lattice images from MMT were established. These procedures involve careful control of the microscope's objective lens defocus to maximize contrast from features of a certain size, as well as limiting the total dose of electrons received by the sample. Direct images of the MMT lattice were obtained from neat Na+ MMT, organically modified MMT, and organically modified MMT/epoxy nanocomposites. The degree of crystallinity and turbostratic disorder were characterized using electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). Also, the extent of the MMT sheets to bend when processed into an epoxy matrix was directly visualized. A minimum radius of curvature tolerable for a single MMT sheet during bending deformation was estimated to be 15 nm, and from this value a critical failure strain of 0.033 was calculated. HREM can be used to improve the understanding of the structure of polymer nanocomposites at the nanometer-length scale. 相似文献

The first, highly two-photon active C60 derivative comprised of a A-sp3-D conjugate structure was synthesized showing effective two-photon absorption cross-sections (sigma 2' = 196 x 10(-48) cm4 sec-1 molecule-1) in the nanosecond regime among the best values for diphenylaminofluorene-based AFX chromophores. 相似文献

We consider quantum nonlinear many-body systems with dissipation described within the Caldeira-Leggett model, i.e., by a nonlocal action in the path integral for the density matrix. Approximate classical-like formulas for thermodynamic quantities are derived for the case of many degrees of freedom, with general kinetic and dissipative quadratic forms. The underlying scheme is the pure-quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation (PQSCHA), equivalent to the variational approach by the Feynman-Jensen inequality with a suitable quadratic nonlocal trial action. A low-coupling approximation permits us to get manageable PQSCHA expressions for quantum thermal averages with a classical Boltzmann factor involving an effective potential and an inner Gaussian average that describes the fluctuations originating from the interplay of quanticity and dissipation. The application of the PQSCHA to a quantum phi(4) chain with Drude-like dissipation shows nontrivial effects of dissipation, depending upon its strength and bandwidth. 相似文献

We consider the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice with S=1/2 and very weak easy-plane exchange anisotropy; by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method, based on the continuous-time loop algorithm, we find that the thermodynamics of the model is highly sensitive to the presence of tiny anisotropies and is characterized by a crossover between isotropic and planar behavior. We discuss the mechanism underlying the crossover phenomenon and show that it occurs at a temperature which is characteristic of the model. The expected Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is observed below the crossover: a finite range of temperatures consequently opens for experimental detection of noncritical 2D XY behavior. Direct comparison is made with uniform susceptibility data relative to the S=1/2 layered antiferromagnet Sr2CuO2Cl2. 相似文献

We present a general purpose QM-MM-MD engine (DYNGA) designed to test alternative hybrid Hamiltonians geared towards the treatment of problems of interest in structural biology including the use of experimental data constraints. In this first presentation we use DYNGA to explore the behaviour of a traditional QM-MM approach in the treatment of the water—water interaction. We find the potential energy hypersurface for the water dimer computed with the HF 4–31G*/TIP3P hybrid Hamiltonian tends to be too flat. We also explore the effect of using traditional QM-MM techniques on proton wires and conclude there is a need for improvement, possibly addressed by using polarizable force fields. 相似文献
