This paper characterizes the conditions required to form nanoliter-sized droplets (plugs) of viscous aqueous reagents in flows of immiscible carrier fluid within microfluidic channels. For both non-viscous (viscosity of 2.0 mPa s) and viscous (viscosity of 18 mPa s) aqueous solutions, plugs formed reliably in a flow of water-immiscible carrier fluid for Capillary number less than 0.01, although plugs were able to form at higher Capillary numbers at lower ratios of the aqueous phase flow rate to the flow rate of the carrier fluid (in all the experiments performed, the Reynolds number was less than 1). The paper also shows that combining viscous and non-viscous reagents can enhance mixing in droplets moving through straight microchannels by providing a nearly ideal initial distribution of reagents within each droplet. The study should facilitate the use of this droplet-based microfluidic platform for investigation of protein crystallization, kinetics, and assays.  相似文献

A series of 5,6-fused ring cyclopentadienyl tricarbonyl manganese and rhenium complexes, [M(CO)3{η 5-1,2-C5H3(1,4-(R)2N2C2}] (2a3d) were isolated by employing an off-metal ring closure route. Reacting thallium cyclopentadienide (Cp) salts (1ad) with [MBr(CO)5] (M = Mn, Re) provided pyridazyl complexes (2a3d) in high yield (75–99 %). Spectroscopic characterization (NMR, IR, MS) confirmed the identity of the desired organometallic pyridazines. The off-metal synthetic pathway employed did improve upon the isolation of these complexes as compared to previously reported routes. The molecular and electronic structure of complexes 2a3d and their optimal energy structures have been characterized with quantum chemistry calculations. Vibrational frequencies calculated were compared to their experimental counterparts. The excited state calculations predict that the dominant low-energy transition involves a ligand-to-metal charge transfer.  相似文献

We consider the free boundary problem for two layers of immiscible, viscous, incompressible fluid in a uniform gravitational field, lying above a rigid bottom in a three-dimensional horizontally periodic setting. The effect of surface tension is either taken into account at both free boundaries or neglected at both. We are concerned with the Rayleigh–Taylor instability, so we assume that the upper fluid is heavier than the lower fluid. When the surface tension at the free internal interface is below a critical value, which we identify, we establish that the problem under consideration is nonlinearly unstable.  相似文献

NOO-type tridentate Schiff base, N-salicylidene-2-aminobenzoic acid, (H2L), and its ternary Cu (II) complex containing H2L Schiff base and 4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (4,7-dmphen), [Cu(4,7-dmphen)(H2L)]27H2O, have been synthesized and characterized by CHN analysis, ESI-MS, FTIR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The interaction of alone H2L Schiff base ligand and ternary Cu (II) complex with biomacramolecules {calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA)} has been investigated by electronic absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The experimental results indicate that H2L Schiff base ligand and ternary Cu (II) complex bind to CT-DNA by means of a moderate intercalation mode. Furthermore, the fluorescence quenching mechanism between H2L Schiff base ligand and ternary Cu (II) complex with BSA possesses a static quenching process. Radical scavenging activity of H2L Schiff base ligand and ternary Cu (II) complex was measured in terms of EC50, using the DPPH and H2O2 methods. Biomacromolecule interactions and scavenging activity studies revealed that ternary Cu (II) complex yielded better results than H2L Schiff base ligand alone.  相似文献

The drugs of abuse cocaine (C), heroin (H), and morphine (M) have been studied to enable understanding of the occurrence of cocaine–opioid interactions at a molecular level. Electrochemical, Raman, and NMR studies of the free drugs and their mixtures were used to study drug–drug interactions. The results were analyzed using data obtained from quantum-mechanical calculations. For the cocaine–morphine mixture (C–MH), formation of a binary complex was detected; this involved the 3-phenolic group and the heterocyclic oxygen of morphine and the carbonyl oxygen and the methyl protons of cocaine’s methyl ester group. NMR studies conducted simultaneously also revealed C–MH binding geometry consistent with theoretical predictions and with electrochemical and vibrational spectroscopy results. These results provide evidence for the occurrence of a cocaine–morphine interaction, both in the solid state and in solution, particularly for the hydrochloride form. We establish the global well-posedness of the problem both with and without surface tension. We prove that without surface tension the solution decays to the equilibrium state at an almost exponential rate; with surface tension, we show that the solution decays at an exponential rate. Our results include the case in which a heavier fluid lies above a lighter one, provided that the surface tension at the free internal interface is above a critical value, which we identify. This means that sufficiently large surface tension stabilizes the Rayleigh–Taylor instability in the nonlinear setting. As a part of our analysis, we establish elliptic estimates for the two-phase stationary Stokes problem.  相似文献

The synthesis of butane-like (GeH(3))(2)(SiH(2))(2) (1), (GeH(3))(2)SiH(SiH(3)) (2), and (GeH(3))(2)(SiH(2)GeH(2)) (3) Si-Ge hydrides with applications in low-temperature synthesis of Ge-rich Si(1-x)Ge(x) optoelectronic alloys has been demonstrated. The compositional, vibrational, structural, and thermochemical properties of these compounds were studied by FTIR, multinuclear NMR, mass spectrometry, Rutherford backscattering, and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The analyses indicate that the linear (GeH(3))(2)(SiH(2))(2) (1) and (GeH(3))(2)(SiH(2)GeH(2)) (3) compounds exist as a mixture of the classic normal (n) and gauche (g) conformational isomers which do not seem to interconvert at 22 degrees C. The conformational proportions in the samples were determined using a new fitting procedure, which combines calculated molecular spectra to reproduce those observed by varying the global intensity, frequency scale, and admixture coefficients of the individual conformers. The (GeH(3))(2)(SiH(2))(2) (1) species was then utilized to fabricate Si(0.50)Ge(0.50) semiconductor alloys reflecting exactly the Si/Ge content of the precursor. Device quality layers were grown via gas source MBE directly on Si(100) at unprecedented low temperatures 350-450 degrees C and display homogeneous compositional and strain profiles, low threading dislocation densities, and atomically planar surfaces. Low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) analysis has demonstrated that the precursor is highly reactive on Si(100) surfaces, with H(2) desorption kinetics comparable to those of Ge(2)H(6), despite the presence of strong Si-H bonds in the molecular structure.  相似文献
