The melting and crystallization of sorbitol were investigated with the DSC method and thermal microscopy. Sorbitol was found to have two crystalline modifications (confirmed by X-ray diffraction) with different melting points, while rapid cooling of molten sorbitol resulted in an amorphous form. The effect of inoculation on the crystallization of the melt was studied too. Powders of both crystalline modifications were used for this purpose. A new technological process for rapid crystallization of molten sorbitol has been worked out on the basis of the thermal analysis results.

An atomic absorption spectrophotometer is coupled to a conventional thermoanalytical quartz furnace as used for TG and DTG to detect the thermally evolved products. In this combined system, the dry aerosol (smoke) obtained by cooling the vapour evolved is transported from the furnace to the flame for metal-specific atomic absorption detection. The particular design of the furnace outlet promotes the formation of stable aerosols. Optimum experimental conditions were determined, using zinc chloride solution, by varying the specimen mass, the heating rate and the flow rate of the furnace gas at a linear temperature program. The absorbancevs. temperature curves obtained with this method for various zinc compounds are compared with the corresponding DTG curves. The applicability of the technique for studying heterogeneous reactions with carbon tetrachloride and hexane vapours is presented. The utilization of an atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a quartz cuvette for detecting the thermal evolution of mercury vapours is described, as well as detection potentials by molecular absorption (for NO and NH3) and light scattering (for smoke evolved from organic matter). The results obtained with the suggested methods may, in some respects, valuably complement the results achieved with DTG and with flame ionization detection.

Thermoanalytical techniques, being rapid and un-expensive have been used for the investigation of the cyclodextrin inclusion complexes for three decades. The conventional thermoanalytical techniques (TG and DTA/DSC) follow the thermal properties of the uncomplexed compounds. Consequently, the inclusion complex formation as well as the liberation of the entrapped guest cannot be followed. Monitoring the products of the thermal fragmentation of parent cyclodextrin and the included molecule(s), applying TG-MS combined technique provides evidence concerning the inclusion complex formation, and besides, gives selective signal to follow the decomposition of the cyclodextrin inclusion complexes. b-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes of Thymol and Lippia sidoides Cham essential oil extract have been prepared and investigated using conventional and combined (TG-MS) thermoanalytical techniques. The evolved gas analysis proved the inclusion complex formation between the host and guests. By the evaluation of the experimental results the elaboration of the entrapped guests from the cyclodextrin cavity could be followed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

The dehydration of hydrated calcium and strontium bromides and iodides was studied by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. The melting in the crystallization water was distinguished from the dehydration in a self-generated atmosphere. The results of the TG and DTA curves made simultaneously were verified by measurements with a Du Pont DSC apparatus. This latter investigation was extended to the previously studied chlorides too. Correlations were found between the temperature of melting or of dehydration and the ionic radii of the respective cations and anions.

The resolution of three chiral alcohols with O,O'-dibenzoyl-(2R,3R)-tartaric acid (DBTA) via diastereoisomeric supramolecular compound formation was investigated with thermoanalytical methods. On the basis of TG measurements the DBTA:chiral alcohol molar ratio in the compounds is 1:1 which agrees with the results of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The DBTA – chiral alcohol supramolecular compounds have different supramolecular structure than the DBTA – achiral alcohol supramolecular compounds. The supramolecular compounds containing cyclohexanols have higher thermal stability than the compounds containing acyclic aliphatic alcohols. The amount of unreacted DBTA monohydrate in the solid phase can be determined both with DSC and with TG measurements. Aerosol particles formed from the vapour of electrothermally heated substances were introduced into an acetylene-air flame for atomization and detection. Thus individual observations could be made on condensed phase processes taking place in the furnace. Curves of absorbance vs. furnace temperature for several zinc compounds were recorded and compared with the corresponding thermoanalytical DTG-curves.

Four amino acids and four different hair samples were studied in order to get information about the decomposition of human hair, using combined (TG-MS) and DSC techniques. The thermal stability of the investigated amino acid samples was different. Since they contain identical functional groups (-NH2, -COOH) some common mass/charge units were identified. However, due to their different chemical composition remarkable differences have also been obtained. The results of the investigation of the amino acids were helpful to study the thermal fragmentation of the hair samples. In our experiments, the effect of the heating rates was also studied. Sintering processes in the Y2O3–Al2O3–B2 O3 system and its subsystems (Y2O3–B2O3 and Al2 O3–B2O3) have been investigated by using combined DTA and XRD measurements to get a better understanding of solid state chemical changes resulting in the formation of yttrium aluminum borate (YAl3(BO3)4, YAB) phase and to study the possible role and contribution of various simple borates formed also in the former processes. Two new exothermic heat effects of YBO3 formation have been detected by DTA in the Y2O3–B2O3 system between 720 and 980°C. In the Al2O3–B2O3 system a new experimental XRD profile of Al4B2O9 was observed. Formation of these borates seems to promote the nucleation of double borate YAB below 1000°C. Conversion of Al4B2O9 to Al18B4 O33 was observed after a long term (10 h) sintering at 1050°C. Similarly, an increased formation of YAB has been observed as a product of the sintering reaction between YBO3 and Al18B4O33 at 1150°C. The two latter single borates are found to be identical with the high temperature decomposition products of YAB. Changes in the water content of aluminium sulphate hydrate were investigated gravimetrically at room temperature in air with different relative humidities. The samples conditioned in this way were characterized by thermoanalytical (TG, DTG, DSC) and X-ray diffraction measurements. Industrial aluminium sulphate hydrate obtained by freezing the melt has a partly crystalline structure. After grinding, this material crystallizes during storage. This process requires a humid atmosphere; increasing relative humidity brings about more intensive crystallization. It was found that the crystallization of aluminium sulphate from the melt is facilitated by a higher water content of the melt.

Summary Thermoanalytical techniques (TG, DSC) are frequently used in the investigation of the thermal properties of cyclodextrins and their inclusion complexes. However, the above techniques do not provide information on the chemical composition of the evolved fragments upon the thermal decomposition. In this study &agr;-, &bgr;- and &ggr;-cyclodextrins and 4 methylated and 3 ethylated &bgr;-CD derivatives were investigated with a TG-MS combined thermoanalytical technique in order to get information about their fragmentation behaviour. By comparison of the TG/DTA curves, a different thermal behaviour was found for each of the native and the chemically modified cyclodextrins. Except for the water loss profiles and the solid-solid phase transformations, the thermal behaviour of the (investigated) native CDs do not show remarkable differences. However, the chemical modification of the native &bgr;-CD resulting in a new compound may change the strength of interactions between host and guest causing differences in the thermal stabilities of the derivatives. The mass spectrometry results supported the observed thermal differences and showed significant alterations in the fragmentation of ethylated and methylated compounds. The investigated natural CDs possess a very similar fragmentation profile, due to the common &agr;-D-glucopyranose building units. In the case of modified CDs characteristic signals of the substituents are present.
