General coordinate invariance and conformal invariance in nonrelativistic physics: Unitary Fermi gas

We show that the Lagrangian for interacting nonrelativistic particles can be coupled to an external gauge field and metric tensor in a way that exhibits a nonrelativistic version of general coordinate invariance. We explore the consequences of this invariance on the example of the degenerate Fermi gas at infinite scattering length, where conformal invariance also plays an important role. We find the most general effective Lagrangian consistent with both general coordinate and conformal invariance to leading and next-to-leading orders in the momentum expansion. At the leading order the Lagrangian contains one phenomenological constant and reproduces the results of the Thomas-Fermi theory and superfluid hydrodynamics. At the next-to-leading order there are two additional constants. We express various physical quantities through these constants.     

Electrospinning of ultrafine cellulose acetate fibers: Studies of a new solvent system and deacetylation of ultrafine cellulose acetate fibers

Electrospinning of cellulose acetate (CA) in a new solvent system and the deacetylation of the resulting ultrafine CA fibers were investigated. Ultrafine CA fibers (∼2.3 μm) were successfully prepared via electrospinning of CA in a mixed solvent of acetone/water at water contents of 10–15 wt %, and more ultrafine CA fibers (0.46 μm) were produced under basic pH conditions. Ultrafine cellulose fibers were regenerated from the homogeneous deacetylation of ultrafine CA fibers in KOH/ethanol. It was very rapid and completed within 20 min. The crystal structure, thermal properties, and morphology of ultrafine CA fibers were changed according to the degree of deacetylation, finally to those of pure cellulose, but the nonwoven fibrous mat structure was maintained. Assessment of thermal expansion coefficient of methylsilsesquioxane thin film

For the methylsilsesquioxane film whose optical birefringence is almost zero, it was recently reported that its vertical thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) was approximately one order of magnitude larger than the lateral CTE. Though the birefringence is not an absolute predictor of anisotropic behavior, the discrepancy in both the CTEs was so remarkable that it was essential to investigate whether the anisotropy was intrinsic property or not. If the effect of Poisson's ratio is considered in the calculation of the vertical CTE and when elastic modulus measured by surface acoustic wave spectroscopy is used in the assessment of the lateral CTE, both the CTEs are coincident with each other. Therefore, it can be concluded that the discrepancy in the CTEs can be attributed to a higher in‐plane polymer chain orientation but it can also arise from the misleadingly assumed modulus and Poisson's ratio. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Loniceroside C,an antiinflammatory saponin from Lonicera japonica

A new triterpenoid saponin, loniceroside C was isolated from the aerial parts of Lonicera japonica. Its structure was established to be 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl hederagenin 28-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-->2)-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl(1-->6)]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester by spectroscopic techniques and chemical transformations. Loniceroside C showed in vivo antiinflammatory activity against mouse ear edema provoked by croton oil.     

Sequential actions of cobalt nanoparticles and palladium(II) catalysts: three-step one-pot synthesis of fenestranes from an enyne and an alkyne diester

A three-step one-pot synthesis of fenestranes from a readily available enyne and an alkyne diester has been carried out with cobalt nanoparticles and palladium(II) as catalysts.     

Synthesis of poly(diallyl phthalate) and silica gel polymer hybrids utilizing π–π interactions

We report here the synthesis of homogeneous polymer hybrids of poly(diallyl phthalate) (PDAP) and silica by utilizing π–π interactions. Use of arylalkoxysilanes such as phenyltrimethoxysilane (PhTMOS), phenethyltrimethoxysilane (PhenethylTMOS) and mesityltrimethoxysilane (MesTMOS) as sources for inorganic phases resulted in optically transparent PDAP-silica polymer hybrids in a wide range of organic and inorganic content ratios. On the other hand, alkoxysilanes such as tetramethoxysilane (TMOS), methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) and i-butyltrimethoxysilane (iBuTMOS) resulted in phase separated, turbid solids. A mixture of tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) and PhTMOS was also studied for the synthesis of PDAP-silica gel polymer hybrids to control the cross-linking density in the inorganic phase. Homogeneity was found to be improved with an increase in PhTMOS content. These homogeneous PDAP polymer hybrids were found to have high thermal stability which wasachieved by nano-scale dispersion of PDAP in silica through extensiveinterface interactions. The homogeneity of the polymer hybrids was confirmed by SEM and TEM, which demonstrate a nanometer level integration of the organic polymer and the inorganic phase.     

Novel fluorophores: efficient synthesis and photophysical study

[structure: see text] We have synthesized novel fluorophores by using Sonogashira reactions of 1,4-bis(dibromovinyl)benzene and 2,5-bis(dibromovinyl)thiophene with various aromatic bromides. The emission maxima of these fluorophores vary from the indigo blue to the reddish-orange region, depending on the structures of aromatic nuclei and peripheral moieties.     

Dicobalt octacarbonyl-catalyzed tandem

Novel 5-5-6 tricyclic compounds containing cyclopentenone have been constructed by the dicobalt octacarbonyl catalyzed tandem [2 + 2 + 1] and [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between a diyne and two phenylacethylene under CO pressure.
