A new glycoside, 3-O-demethylcolchicine-3-O-alpha-d-glucopyranoside, from Gloriosa superba seeds

A new colchicine glycoside, 3-O-demethylcolchicine-3-O-alpha-D-glucopyranoside, has been isolated from Gloriosa superba seeds. The assigned structure has been corroborated by spectroscopic data and enzymatic hydrolysis.     

Microwave Induced Acetoacetylation of Hetaryl and Aryl Amines

Acetoacetylation of hetaryl and aryl amines by interaction with ethyl acetoacetate under microwave irradiation, without any catalyst and/or solvent, is reported.     

Search for anomalous interaction mean free paths of charge, 2≦Z≦18 projectile fragments in emulsions exposed to 1.8 A GeV40Ar ions

⁴⁰Ar-emulsion interactions are studied, to investigate the question of anomalons, in twoG- 5 emulsion stacks. In about 4600 primary interactions, projectile fragments of Z≧2 for all generations have been followed until they interact or leave the stack. After careful estimation of charges of these fragments, variation of their mean free paths is studied as a function of distance from the preceding interaction. Generation effect,N _h dependence and production angle effect are investigated. In addition multi-chain events are analysed separately. Our results do not show anomalons at the 6% level and are consistent with non-occurrence of anomalons. However, this experiment is not sensitive enough to rule out anomalons (with a mfp of the order of 2 to 3 cm) produced at about 1% (or less) level.     

Base-catalyzed isomerization of phenylpropenes

The prototropic rearrangement of 3-phenyl-1-propenes to the corresponding 1-phenyl-1-propenes was investigated in basic media utilizing 0.1M sodium ethoxide in absolute ethanol at 81°C. It was found that the effect of substituents on the rate of such isomerizations follows the order: p-NO₂ > o-Cl > m-Cl ≥ m-F > p-Br > o-CH₃ > m-CH₃ > m-CH(CH₃)₂ > p-CH(CH₃)₂ ≥ p-C(CH₃)₃ > o-OCH₃. This is consistent with first-order kinetics and “BS” mechanism. Quantitative treatment in terms of Hammett's equation showed a straight line, with a slope (p value) of +2.25. An increase in the strength of the base was also found to cause an increase in the rate of isomerization.     

Estimation of background radiation levels and associated health risks in mineral rich district Chiniot,Pakistan

The mineral extraction activities may disturb the natural radioactivity, therefore current study aims to generate baseline data of natural radionuclides and anthropogenic ¹³⁷Cs before the start of industrial activities. Gamma spectrometry and gross alpha and beta counting systems were used for activity measurement in environmental samples. In soil, the mean activity of ²³²Th, ²²⁶Ra, ⁴⁰K and ¹³⁷Cs were determined as 79 (66–117), 47 (34–80), 823 (602–1159) and 1.3 (1.1–4.5) Bq kg^?1, respectively. The average annual effective dose rate (128.7 µSv h^?1) in the study area was twice higher than world’s average value. Indoor hazard index was greater than unity at two places; therefore, proper ventilation is proposed during construction.

     

Computer simulation of proton channelling in silicon

The channelling of 3 MeV protons in the 〈110〉 direction of silicon has been simulated using Vineyard model taking into account thermally vibrating nuclei and energy loss due to ion-electron interactions. A beam made up of constant energy particles but with spatial divergence has been simulated for the purpose. The values of the minimum scattering yield and half width of the channelling dip are shown to be depth sensitive and agree well with the measured values. The dependence of yield on the angle of incidence has been found to give information of all three types of channelling. The critical angles for the three types of channelling and wavelength of planar oscillations are consistent with the previous calculations.     

Isolation and Crystal Structure of 6α,7α-Epoxy-5α,17α,27-trihydroxy-1-oxo-22R-witha-2,24-dienolide monohydrate-A Withasteroid from Withania somnifera Leaves

Abstract  

(5R,6S,7S,8S,9S,10R,13S,14S,17S,20R,22R)-6α,7α-epoxy-5α,17α,27-trihydroxy-1-oxo-22R-witha-2,24-dienolide has been isolated from Withania somnifera leaves. Three-dimensional X-ray intensity data were collected at 293 K on Bruker CCD area-detector diffractometer equipped with graphite-monochromated MoKα radiation (λ = 0.71073 ?). The compound crystallizes in monoclinic space group P21 with unit cell parameters: a = 6.4540(2), b = 11.3656(4), c = 17.4982(5) ?, β = 90.730 ^o(2), Z = 2. The crystal structure was refined to a final R-value of 0.0419 for 6122 observed reflections. One water solvent molecule was observed. All the rings of the steroid skeleton are trans connected. Rings A and B exists in a half-chair conformation, ring C a chair, and five membered ring D is intermediate between half-chair and envelope. The δ-lactone ring E adopts a distorted sofa conformation. The characteristic pattern observed in the packing diagram is the appearance of twisted chains of molecules. The packing of the molecules in the crystal is stabilized by intra- and intermolecular O–H···O and C–H···O interactions.     

Covalently functionalized hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets by nitrene addition

The covalent functionalization of exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets by nitrene addition is described. Integration of functionalized h-BN nanosheets within a polycarbonate matrix is demonstrated and was found to afford significant increases in mechanical properties. This integration methodology was further extended by the covalent modification of the h-BN nanosheets with polymer chains of a polycarbonate analogue, and the integration of the polymer modified h-BN within the polymer matrix.     

Passively Q-switched diode-pumped Raman laser with third-order Stokes eye-safe oscillation

We demonstrate a passively Q-switched all-solid-state laser system with intracavity Raman frequency conversion to the eye-safe spectral region. Laser oscillation at the 1.064 μm wavelength with a pulse repetition rate of several kilohertz was provided by a Nd:YAG crystal and a Cr:YAG passive absorber. Third Stokes oscillations at the 1.599 and 1.494 μm wavelengths were obtained in Ba(NO₃)₂ and PbWO₄ crystals with output pulse energies of 5 μJ and 6 μJ, respectively. The results of the numerical simulation of the pulse dynamics are in good agreement with the experimental data.
