Excess enthalpies of (methyl propanoate or methyl pentanoate + 1-alkanol) at 298.15 K

The excess molar enthalpies H_m^E of methyl propanoate or methyl pentanoate + 1-butanol, + 1-hexanol, + 1-octanol, and + 1-decanol have been determined experimentally at 298.15 K using a Calvet microcalorimeter. For all these mixtures H_m^E > 0; the values increase with the chain length of the alkanol but decrease as the ester chain lengthens.     

Thermal stability of lysozyme and myoglobin in the presence of anionic surfactants

The interactions of lysozyme and myoglobin with anionic surfactants (hydrogenated and fluorinated), at surfactant concentrations below the critical micelle concentration, in aqueous solution were studied using spectroscopic techniques. The temperature conformational transition of globular proteins by anionic surfactants was analysed as a function of denaturant concentration through absorbance measurements at 280 nm. Changes in absorbance of protein-surfactant system with temperature were used to determine the unfolding thermodynamics parameters, melting temperature, T _m, enthalpy, ΔH _m, entropy, ΔS _m and the heat capacity change, ΔC _p, between the native and denatured states.     

Physicochemical study of ovalbumin in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate in aqueous media

The interactions of sodium dodecyl sulphate with ovalbumin in aqueous solution at room temperature are described for a wide concentration range of both substances. A phase diagram covering a wide range of concentrations shows a total of five different morphologies. Dynamic light scattering of the samples from each morphology offered better understanding of the different structures (between three and four) present in the solution. The amount of ovalbumin present in the solution was confirmed with differential scanning spectroscopy, while the interactions between sodium dodecyl sulphate and ovalbumin were interpreted by zeta potential and electrical conductivity measurements.     

(Z)-3-p-tolylsulfinylacrylonitrile as a chiral dienophile: diels-alder reactions with furan and acyclic dienes

The behavior of (Z)-3-p-tolylsulfinylacrylonitrile (1) as a chiral dienophile has been evaluated from its reactions with furan and acyclic dienes. Electrostatic interactions of the cyano group with the sulfinyl one restrict the conformational mobility around the C-S bond, thus controlling the pi-facial selectivity, which is almost complete in all cases, the approach of the diene from the less-hindered face of the dienophile (that bearing the lone electron pair) in the predominant rotamer being the favored one. The regioselectivity is also completely controlled by the cyano group. Additionally, the reactivity of compound 1 as well as its endo-selectivity are both higher than those observed for the corresponding (Z)-3-sulfinylacrylates, thus proving the potential of sulfinylnitriles as chiral dienophiles.
