Spatial Vector Solitons in Nonlinear Photonic Crystal Fibers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We study spatial vector solitons in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) made of a material with the focusing Kerr nonlinearity. We show that such two-component localized nonlinear waves consist of two mutually trapped components confined by the PCF linear and the self-induced nonlinear refractive indices, and they bifurcate from the corresponding scalar solitons. We demonstrate that, in a sharp contrast with an entirely homogeneous nonlinear Kerr medium where both scalar and vector spatial solitons are unstable and may collapse, the periodic structure of PCF can stabilize the otherwise unstable two-dimensional spatial optical solitons. We apply the matrix criterion for stability of these two-parameter solitons, and verify it by direct numerical simulations.  相似文献

Anaerobic microorganisms of the Geobacter genus are effective electron sources for the synthesis of nanoparticles, for bioremediation of polluted water, and for the production of electricity in fuel cells. In multistep reactions, electrons are transferred via iron/heme cofactors of c‐type cytochromes from the inner cell membrane to extracellular metal ions, which are bound to outer membrane cytochromes. We measured electron production and electron flux rates to 5×105 e s?1 per G. sulfurreducens. Remarkably, these rates are independent of the oxidants, and follow zero order kinetics. It turned out that the microorganisms regulate electron flux rates by increasing their Fe2+/Fe3+ ratios in the multiheme cytochromes whenever the activity of the extracellular metal oxidants is diminished. By this mechanism the respiration remains constant even when oxidizing conditions are changing. This homeostasis is a vital condition for living systems, and makes G. sulfurreducens a versatile electron source.  相似文献

We study composite spatial optical solitons supported by two-wave mutual focusing induced by cross-phase modulation in Kerr-like nonlinear media. We find the families of both single- and two-hump solitons and discuss their properties and stability. We also reveal remarkable similarities between recently predicted holographic solitons in photorefractive media and parametric solitons in quadratic nonlinear crystals.  相似文献

A set of diglycidylether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA)/4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) epoxy matrix modified with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), pre‐cured at two different temperatures, was examined by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). The aim was to investigate the correlation between local free volume and mechanical properties. A negative deviation from the linear additivity rule of the local free volume is observed at both cure schedules. Using together the local free volume and mechanical results allows to conclude that the cure temperature makes small contribution to the flexural strength and modulus of blends but is responsible for the composition‐dependent rise of the fracture toughness. It is proposed that this behavior is a consequence of the nearest‐neighbor intrachain contacts or self‐association of the epoxy‐OH groups during cure leading to a non‐uniform space distribution of the DGEBA–PEO contacts, which causes the deflection of the crack path. A fully-automated system has been developed to measure changes in ultrasonic velocity and the attenuation coefficient resulting from changes in temperature and magnetic field. Accuracy and sensitivity comparable to the pulse-echo overlap technique have been achieved together with an increase in temperature resolution and sample throughput as a result of the automation. We study higher-order nonlinear modes in the form of vortex solitons and soliton clusters propagating in the waveguides created in photonic crystal fibers made of a material with the focusing Kerr nonlinearity. We find numerically different families of such nonlinear modes with a nontrivial topology and study their bifurcations. We also study the soliton stability to propagation. We demonstrate that waveguides in photonic crystal fibers may support a variety of soliton clusters with the symmetries that may differ from the lattice symmetry. We also discuss briefly the case of a dual-core coupler created by two neighboring cores in a photonic crystal fiber and find numerically the profiles of symmetric and asymmetric nonlinear modes.  相似文献
