We report the results of a detailed study of surface relaxation of 199Hg nuclear spins in paraffin coated cells. From measurements of the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the spin relaxation rates we determine the correlation time for magnetic fluctuations and the surface adsorption energy. The data indicate that surface relaxation is caused by dipolar coupling to paramagnetic sites on the surface. We also observe changes in the spin relaxation rate caused by ultraviolet radiation resonant with the 254 nm transition in Hg.  相似文献

Detection of NMR signals with a radio-frequency atomic magnetometer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We demonstrate detection of proton NMR signals with a radio-frequency (rf) atomic magnetometer tuned to the NMR frequency of 62 kHz. High-frequency operation of the atomic magnetometer makes it relatively insensitive to ambient magnetic field noise. We obtain magnetic field sensitivity of 7 fT/Hz1/2 using only a thin aluminum shield. We also derive an expression for the fundamental sensitivity limit of a surface inductive pick-up coil as a function of frequency and find that an atomic rf magnetometer is intrinsically more sensitive than a coil of comparable size for frequencies below about 50 MHz.  相似文献

We describe an alkali-metal magnetometer for detection of weak magnetic fields in the radio-frequency (rf) range. High sensitivity is achieved by tuning the Zeeman resonance of alkali atoms to the rf frequency and partially suppressing spin-exchange collisions in the alkali-metal vapor. We demonstrate magnetic field sensitivity of 2 fT/Hz(1/2) at a frequency of 99 kHz with a resonance width of 400 Hz. We also derive a simple analytic expression for the fundamental limit on the sensitivity of the rf magnetometer and show that a sensitivity of about 0.01 fT/Hz(1/2) can be achieved in a practical system with a measurement volume of 200 cm3.  相似文献

We demonstrate detection of NMR signals using a noncryogenic atomic magnetometer and describe several novel applications of this technique. A nuclear spin-precession signal from water is detected using a spin-exchange-relaxation-free potassium magnetometer. We also demonstrate detection of less than 10(13) 129Xe atoms whose NMR signal is enhanced by a factor of 540 due to Fermi-contact interaction with K atoms. The possibility of using a multichannel atomic magnetometer for fast 3D magnetic resonance imaging is also discussed.  相似文献

In measurements of small signals using spin precession the precession angle usually grows linearly in time. We show that a dynamic instability caused by spin interactions can lead to an exponentially growing spin-precession angle, amplifying small signals and raising them above the noise level of a detection system. We demonstrate amplification by a factor of greater than 8 of a spin-precession signal due to a small magnetic field gradient in a spherical cell filled with hyperpolarized liquid 129Xe. This technique can improve the sensitivity in many measurements that are limited by the noise of the detection system, rather than the fundamental spin-projection noise.  相似文献

We report an enhancement of proton NMR signals by a factor of 10(6) by cross polarization with hyperpolarized liquid 129Xe in an ultralow magnetic field of 1 microT. The NMR signals from cyclopentane, acetone, and methanol are detected using a commercial high-T(c) SQUID magnetometer with a signal-to-noise ratio of up to 1000 from a single 90 degrees tipping pulse. This technique allows a wide range of low-field NMR measurements and is promising for the detection of intermolecular scalar spin-spin couplings. Scalar intermolecular couplings can produce a shift of the average NMR frequency in a hyperpolarized sample even in the presence of rapid chemical exchange.  相似文献

Using spin-echo NMR techniques we study the transverse spin relaxation of hyperpolarized liquid 129Xe in a spherical cell. We observe an instability of the transverse magnetization due to dipolar fields produced by liquid 129Xe, and find that imperfections in the pi pulses of the spin-echo sequence suppress this instability. A simple perturbative model of this effect is in good agreement with the data. We obtain a transverse spin relaxation time of 1300 sec in liquid 129Xe, and discuss applications of hyperpolarized liquid 129Xe as a sensitive magnetic gradiometer and for a permanent electric dipole moment search.  相似文献

We present the first results of a new search for a permanent electric dipole moment of the 199Hg atom using a UV laser. Our measurements give d(199Hg) = -(1.06+/-0.49+/-0.40)x10(-28)e cm. We interpret the result as an upper limit absolute value [d(199Hg)]<2.1x10(-28)e cm (95% C.L.), which sets new constraints on theta bar;(QCD), chromo-EDMs of the quarks, and CP violation in supersymmetric models.  相似文献
