Study of fiber optic sugar sensor

Over the last two decades, the fiber optic technology has passed through many analytical stages. Some commercially available fiber optic sensors, though in a small way, are being used for automation in mechanical and industrial environments. They are also used for instrumentation and controls. In the present work, an intensity-modulated intrinsic fiber optic sugar sensor is presented. This type of sensor, with slight modification, can be used for on-line determination of the concentration of sugar content in sugarcane juice in sugar industry. In the present set-up, a plastic fiber made of polymethylmethacrylate is used. A portion of the cladding (1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm) at the mid-point along the length of the fiber is removed. This portion is immersed in sugar solution of known concentration and refractive index. At one end of the fiber an 850 nm source is used and at the other end a power meter is connected. By varying the concentration of sugar solution, the output power is noted. These studies are made due to the change in refractive index of the fluid. The device was found to be very sensitive which is free from EMI and shock hazards, stable and repeatable and they can be remotely interfaced with a computer to give on-line measurements and thus become useful for application in sugar industries.     

Determination of traces of palladium using radioactive zinc dithizonate as a reagent

Photochemical C–N bond forming reactions for the synthesis of five-membered fused N-heterocycles

Abstract

Few conversions cannot take place with ground-state reactions even with the help of a catalyst, therefore they are made to occur under photochemical conditions. The transfer of electrons took place even with the photochemical excitement of one molecule where redox reaction cannot occur at the ground state. The ground-state reactions resulted in the formation of side products. The substrates did not require any sort of chemical activation for C–N bond construction in the course of photochemical reactions. The source of energy; light has always been the interest of researchers in order to induce chemical reactions ever since the starting of scientific chemistry. The present review encloses the chemistry of photochemical transformations with a focus on their synthetic uses. The organic photochemical reactions prevent the polluting or harmful reagents thus, provides a possibility for sustainable procedures as well as green chemistry. This review article displays the formation of numerous of five-membered fused nitrogen-heterocyclic compounds.     

Oxidation of some catecholamines by sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide in acid medium: A kinetic and mechanistic approach

The kinetics of the oxidation of five catecholamines viz., dopamine (A), L-dopa (B), methyldopa (C), epinephrine (D) and norepinephrine (E) by sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide or chloramine-T (CAT) in presence of HClO₄ was studied at 30±0.1 °C. The five reactions followed identical kinetics with a first-order dependence on [CAT] _o , fractional-order in [substrate] _o , and inverse fractional-order in [H⁺]. Under comparable experimental conditions, the rate of oxidation of catecholamines increases in the order D>E>A>B>C. The variation of ionic strength of the medium and the addition of p-toluenesulfonamide or halide ions had no significant effect on the reaction rate. The rate increased with decreasing dielectric constant of the medium. The solvent isotope effect was studied using D₂O. A Michaelis-Menten type mechanism has been suggested to explain the results. Equilibrium and decomposition constants for CAT-catecholamine complexes have been evaluated. CH₃C₆H₄SO₂NHCl of the oxidant has been postulated as the reactive oxidizing species and oxidation products were identified. An isokinetic relationship is observed with β=361 K, indicating that enthalpy factors control the reaction rate. The mechanism proposed and the derived rate law are consistent with the observed kinetics.     

Liquid Densities and Excess Molar Volumes for Binary Systems (Ionic Liquids + Methanol or Water) at 298.15, 303.15 and 313.15 K,and at Atmospheric Pressure

Binary excess molar volumes, V _m ^E, have been evaluated from density measurements, using a vibrating tube densimeter over the entire composition range for binary liquid mixtures of ionic liquids 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium diethyleneglycol monomethylethersulphate [EMIM]⁺[CH₃(OCH₂CH₂)₂OSO₃]⁻ or 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium diethyleneglycol monomethylethersulphate [BMIM]⁺[CH₃(OCH₂CH₂)₂OSO₃]⁻ or 1-methyl-3-octyl-imidazolium diethyleneglycol monomethylethersulphate [MOIM]⁺[CH₃(OCH₂CH₂)₂OSO₃]⁻+methanol and [EMIM]⁺[CH₃(OCH₂CH₂)₂OSO₃]⁻+water at 298.15, 303.15 and 313.15 K. The V _m ^E values were found to be negative for all systems studied. The V _m ^E results are explained in terms of intermolecular interactions and packing effects. The experimental data were fitted by the Redlich-Kister polynomial.     

Ag-mediated synthesis of six-membered N-heterocycles

Abstract

One of the highly emerging and an important aspect of organic chemistry is the metal catalyzed synthesis of heterocycles. The methods used earlier for the synthesis of heterocycles were significant in the organic synthesis and developing cost-effective, improved and facial methods were beneficial to construct the complex architectures. For the both stereoselective and regioselective synthesis of six-membered nitrogen containing heterocycles, cyclic reactions that are Ag-mediated have known to be very efficient. The present review covers the applications of Ag in the formation of six-membered nitrogen containing heterocycles.     

Ruthenium(III)- and osmium(VIII)-catalyzed oxidation of 2-thiouracil by bromamine-B in acid and alkaline media: a kinetic and mechanistic study

The kinetics of oxidation of 2-thiouracil (TU) by sodium N-bromobenzenesulphonamide or bromamine-B (BAB) have been studied in an HCl medium, catalyzed by RuCl₃, and in a NaOH media with OsO₄ as catalyst, at 313 K. The stoichiometry and oxidation products are the same in both cases, but their kinetic patterns were found to be different. In acid medium the rate shows a first order dependence in each of [BAB] and [TU], and is dependent on [Ru^III]. The reaction rate is inversely dependent on [H⁺]. In alkaline medium, the rate is first order in [BAB] and in [Os^VIII] and zero order in [TU]. The reaction rate is dependent on [NaOH]. Activation parameters have been evaluated, solvent isotope effects have been studied in D₂O medium, and equilibrium constants were calculated. The activation parameters and rate constants indicate that the catalytic efficiency is: Os^VIII > Ru^III. The proposed mechanisms and the derived rate laws are consistent with the observed kinetics.
