Calixarene-based dendrimers. Second generation of a calix[4]-dendrimer with a ‘tren’ as core

Hyperbranched calix[4] (4) and calix[4]-dendrimer (5) as a second generation (G2) of calixdendrimers have been synthesized by divergent and convergent synthesis via amidation reactions.     

Diels–Alder reactions and transformations of 2-cyclopenten-1-one with a chiral anthracene template

Excellent regio- and diastereoselectivity were achieved in the microwave assisted Diels–Alder reaction between (S)-9-(1-methoxyethyl) anthracene and 2-cyclopenten-1-one. The addition of Grignard reagents to the ketone cycloadduct gave poor levels of diastereoselectivity, however, the reduction was significantly more stereoselective. Flash vacuum pyrolysis of the reduced material furnished the corresponding allylic alcohol in good yield and ee.     

Decentralized CRONE control of nonsquare multivariable systems in path-tracking design

In this paper, motion control and robust path tracking were extended to nonsquare MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) systems having more outputs than inputs. A path-tracking design based on fractional prefilter approach has been developed and extended to control nonsquare MIMO systems. The nonsquare relative gain array (NRG) is used to assess the performance of nonsquare control systems based on steady-state information. The CRONE control approach developed for multivariable plants based on third-generation SISO CRONE methodology is combined with MIMO-QFT (Quantitative Feedback Theory) robust design methodology, taking into account the plant uncertainties. After the determination of CRONE controller, the parameter of prefilter has been optimized considering physical constraints of actuators and the tracking performance specifications. The proposed design is applied to an example.

This timely review focuses on the synthesis of dendrimers from calix[4]arenes and thiacalix[4]arenes. Some interesting features of these calix-dendrimers are given.     

A New Approach to Dendrimers made from p-tert-Butyl Calix[4]arenes

A new family of hyperbranched molecules and dendrimers has been constructed from a diamide–dicalix derivative prepared from monocarbomethoxymethyl p-tert-butyl calix[4]arene and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (‘tren’) via amide-formation reactions. The selective 1,3-di-O-functionalization of p-tert-butyl calix[4]arene moieties allows the synthesis of first- (G1) and second-generation (G2) calix-dendrimers. Replacement of the quadridentate amine by a trithia-ether-triamine-mono-ol, ’hyten’, again results in acylation of the amino groups, but with the generation of a central cavity with different complexing properties.

Path tracking design based on Davidson–Cole prefilter using a centralized CRONE controller applied to multivariable systems

To perfectly govern MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) processes, a fully populated matrix controller has been developed due to its flexibility. Taking into account the plant uncertainties, the CRONE (Commande Robuste d’Ordre Non Entier) control approach is used with the non-diagonal quantitative feedback theory (QFT) procedure. The MIMO-QFT robust synthesis methodology has been used in order to generate the appropriate equivalent MISO (Multi-Input Single-Output) system structure from the MIMO plant. For each MISO structure, the CRONE control approach based on third-generation CRONE methodology is used to find the diagonal elements of the controller of the plant while considering the plant uncertainties. The non-diagonal part of the controller is determined to reach the aim of minimizing the coupling effects. After that, a fractional prefilter synthesis approach is developed to find the non-integer prefilter expression satisfying the tracking specifications. A SCARA robot manipulator has been used to verify the designed controller performances.     

Synthesis and complexing properties of four imidazolyl acetamido p-tert-butylcalix[4]arenes

Four imidazolyl acetamido p-tert-butylcalix[4]arenes 5–8 have been prepared by reacting the corresponding methyl esters derivatives 1–4 with histamine in 1:1 mixture of methanol:toluene. The yields ranged from 56 to 68%. 5–8 have been shown to be in cone conformation. The complexation behaviour of 5–8 towards monovalent metal picrates M⁺Pic⁻ with M⁺ = Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Rb⁺ and Cs⁺ and divalent metal picrates M²⁺(Pic⁻)₂ with M²⁺ = Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺, Ba²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Co²⁺ are given. Tentative localisation of the metal cations in the receptors is given. The binding properties towards these cations have been determined along with stoichiometries of the complexes.     

Synthesis, 1H-NMR conformational analysis and complexation studies of two di-imidazolyl acetamido p-tert-butylcalix[4]arenes

The synthesis of a new di-imidazolyl-di-methoxy acetamido p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene 4 is reported. 4 has been prepared by reacting the corresponding di-methyl ester di-methoxy derivative with histamine in 1:1 mixture of methanol: toluene. The binding properties of 4 towards alkali, alkaline earth, transition (Zn²⁺, Co²⁺) and heavy (Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺) metals have been investigated along with the complexes stoichiometries. The ¹H-NMR spectra of complexes show the location of cations in receptor 4. Partial cone conformation is observed only with strontium and calcium whereas the cone conformation is detected with most of the cations. Comparison of the complexation results with those obtained for di-imidazolyl acetamido p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene 3 missing the methyl groups is also reported.
