Additions of enantiopure alpha-sulfinyl carbanions to (S)-N-sulfinimines: asymmetric synthesis of beta-amino sulfoxides and beta-alphamino alcohols

The addition of the lithium anions derived from (R)- and (S)-methyl and -ethyl p-tolyl sulfoxides to (S)-N-benzylidene-p-toluenesulfinamide provides an easy access route to enantiomerically pure beta-(N-sulfinyl)amino sulfoxides. Stereoselectivity can be achieved when the configurations at the sulfur atoms of the two reagents are opposite (matched pair), thus resulting in only one diastereoisomer, even for the case in which two new chiral centers are created. The N-sulfinyl group primarily controls the configuration of the carbon bonded to the nitrogen, whereas the configuration of the alpha-sulfinyl carbanion seems to be responsible for the level of asymmetric induction, as well as for the configuration of the new stereogenic C-SO carbon in the reactions with ethyl p-tolyl sulfoxides. An efficient method for transforming the obtained beta-(N-sulfinyl)amino sulfoxides into optically pure beta-amino alcohols, based on the stereoselective non-oxidative Pummerer reaction, is also reported.     

Integrating chemosensors for amine-containing compounds into cross-linked dendritic hosts

Trifluoroacetylazo dye 1, a known chemosensor for amines, has been integrated into cross-linked dendrimer hosts. Thus, boronic acid 16 was linked to iododye 9 via a Suzuki coupling reaction. In situ deprotection and alkylation with dendrons 3 and 4, containing 8 homoallyl or allyl ether groups, respectively, afforded dendrons 18 and 19 with chemosensor units at their focal point. Conversion of 18 (19) to the bis-imine of butane 1,4-diamine, extensive cross-linking via the ring closing metathesis reaction with Grubbs catalyst 25, and hydrolysis produced dendrimer hosts 28 and 29. Host-guest studies with a small library of amines and alcohols showed 28 and 29 to selectively signal certain diamines but not due to template mediated imprinting.     

(Z)-3-p-tolylsulfinylacrylonitrile as a chiral dienophile: diels-alder reactions with furan and acyclic dienes

The behavior of (Z)-3-p-tolylsulfinylacrylonitrile (1) as a chiral dienophile has been evaluated from its reactions with furan and acyclic dienes. Electrostatic interactions of the cyano group with the sulfinyl one restrict the conformational mobility around the C-S bond, thus controlling the pi-facial selectivity, which is almost complete in all cases, the approach of the diene from the less-hindered face of the dienophile (that bearing the lone electron pair) in the predominant rotamer being the favored one. The regioselectivity is also completely controlled by the cyano group. Additionally, the reactivity of compound 1 as well as its endo-selectivity are both higher than those observed for the corresponding (Z)-3-sulfinylacrylates, thus proving the potential of sulfinylnitriles as chiral dienophiles.     

Quantum correlated twin beams

We discuss recent progress in the study of the non-classical properties of light beams generated by non-degenerate parametric splitting in ⁽²⁾ nonlinear birefringent crystals, with special emphasis on their quantum correlation (twin beams). We describe experimental results using successively pure parametric fluorescence, parametric amplification of a weak signal beam pumped by a pulsed laser, and parametric oscillation in a cavity pumped by a cw laser. In this review, we compare the respective advantages and drawbacks of the different approaches.     

An analytic approach to the ergodic theory of a stochastic variational inequality

In an earlier work made by the first author with J. Turi (Degenerate Dirichlet Problems Related to the Invariant Measure of Elasto-Plastic Oscillators, AMO, 2008), the solution of a stochastic variational inequality modeling an elasto-perfectly-plastic oscillator has been studied. The existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure have been proven. Nonlocal problems have been introduced in this context. In this work, we present a new characterization of the invariant measure. The key finding is the connection between nonlocal PDEs and local PDEs which can be interpreted with short cycles of the Markov process solution of the stochastic variational inequality.     

Enhanced weak-signal sensitivity in two-photon microscopy by adaptive illumination

We describe a technique to enhance both the weak-signal relative sensitivity and the dynamic range of a laser scanning optical microscope. The technique is based on maintaining a fixed detection power by fast feedback control of the illumination power, thereby transferring high measurement resolution to weak signals while virtually eliminating the possibility of image saturation. We analyze and demonstrate the benefits of adaptive illumination in two-photon fluorescence microscopy.
