Conditional independence models for seemingly unrelated regressions with incomplete data

We consider normal ≡ Gaussian seemingly unrelated regressions (SUR) with incomplete data (ID). Imposing a natural minimal set of conditional independence constraints, we find a restricted SUR/ID model whose likelihood function and parameter space factor into the product of the likelihood functions and the parameter spaces of standard complete data multivariate analysis of variance models. Hence, the restricted model has a unimodal likelihood and permits explicit likelihood inference. In the development of our methodology, we review and extend existing results for complete data SUR models and the multivariate ID problem.     

Compact integration operators for Fréchet-space-valued measures

Many operators in Banach spaces occur as the integration operator of a suitable vector measure; their compactness is completely described in [19]. However, many important spaces X in analysis (and integration operators in such spaces) do not fall into this scheme because X is not normable. Characterizing the compactness of integration operators in this setting is the aim of this note. The methods and techniques employed are quite different to the Banach space arguments used in [19].     

Aspects of operator theory in hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces

We examine certain special features exhibited by various classes of linear operators acting in a hereditarily indecomposable Banach space. For instance, we show that the family of all Riesz operators in a H.I. space forms a closed, 2-sided ideal. We also give further characterizations of the class of scalar-type spectral operators (to those already given in [16]). The final section discusses some properties of the spectral maximal spaces of (necessarily decomposable) linear operators in such spaces. Synthesis and characterization of a semiflexible liquid crystalline polyester with a broad nematic region

In this paper, we report on the synthesis and detailed characterization of a new semiflexible nematic liquid crystalline polyester which could serve as a 'model' polyester for a variety of physical and physico-chemical investigations. The polymer is a nematic liquid over a wide temperature range-from the glass transition temperature at ∼95°C to the isotropic transition at ∼240°C. We expect this polyester to be particularly useful for studying the effect of flow on the orientation of liquid crystalline polymers, as well as the production and removal of disclinations.
