Electrical resistivity of the alkaline earth metals Ca,Sr and Ba in the 50–300K temperature region

The computed values of the temperature dependent electrical resistivity is presented for the alkaline earth metals Ca, Sr and Ba. Numerical values of the mean free paths obtained using a finite mean free path approach is also reported. The structure factor has been evaluated using experimental values for the phonon spectra while local model potentials were used for the form factors. Our numerical results compare favourably with experiments.     

Towards constraint-based school timetabling

This paper takes three important steps towards constraint-based school timetabling: (i) It proposes a constraint model that covers many important requirements of school timetables by means of global constraints. (ii) It proposes a corresponding problem solver that learns from its earlier faults and restarts to escape non-promising parts of the search space. (iii) By reporting a large-scale computational study, it delivers a proof of concept.     

An instability of the Godunov scheme

We construct a solution to a 2 × 2 strictly hyperbolic system of conservation laws, showing that the Godunov scheme [13] can produce an arbitrarily large amount of oscillations. This happens when the speed of a shock is close to rational, inducing a resonance with the grid. Differently from the Glimm scheme or the vanishing‐viscosity method, for systems of conservation laws our counterexample indicates that no a priori BV bounds or L¹‐stability estimates can in general be valid for finite difference schemes. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

Effect of Tm concentration on the tunability of the YLF laser in the 1.9 µm region

We describe the continuous-wave (cw) operation of a LiYF₄ laser based on crystals doped with different concentrations of Tm³⁺. We observed the fluorescence spectra from the upper laser level when the crystal is placed inside the laser resonator, in the same optical environment of the coherent emission. We measured the laser intensity as a function of pump power and obtained a 24% slope efficiency by selecting a suitable orientation of the crystal. Using all this information, we were able to demonstrate laser tunability at 1.9 µm in a 50 cm^–1 wide interval.     

The enthalpy of mixing of liquid NaF and NaMgF3 from drop calorimetry

The enthalpy of mixing of three liquid mixtures of NaF and NaMgF₃ has been measured by drop calorimetry and was found to be negative. This energy release is attributed to a change in the equilibrium

Mg_1/4[MgF²⁻₄]_3/4+f⁻ å MgF²⁻₄ to the formation of complex MgF²⁻₄-ions. A ΔH^M diagram for the system NaF-MgF₂ up to 50 mol % MgF₂ has been constructed.     

Differential Invariants of the 2D Conformal Lie Algebra Action

We consider the Lie algebra that corresponds to the Lie pseudogroup of all conformal transformations on the plane. This conformal Lie algebra is canonically represented as the Lie algebra of holomorphic vector fields in ℝ²≃ℂ. We describe all representations of \mathfrakg\mathfrak{g} via vector fields in J ⁰ℝ²=ℝ³(x,y,u), which project to the canonical representation, and find their algebra of scalar differential invariants.
