Unions of three starshaped sets in R2

LetS be a compact, simply connected set inR ². If every boundary point ofS is clearly visible viaS from at least one of the three pointsa, b, c, thenS is a union of three starshaped sets whose kernels containa, b, c, respectively. The result fails when the number three is replaced by four.As a partial converse, ifS is a union of three starshaped sets whose kernels containa, b, c, respectively, then the set of points in the boundary ofS clearly visible from at least one ofa, b, orc is dense in the boundary ofS.Supported in part by NSF grant DMS-8705336.     

Three chiral vinyldioxaza­borocanes

The structures of three chiral vinyldioxaza­borocanes are reported, namely (2E)‐ and (2Z)‐6‐benzyl‐2‐buten‐2‐yl‐1,3,6,2‐dioxaza­borocane, C₂₇H₃₀BNO₂, (II) and (III), respectively, and (2Z)‐2‐buten‐2‐yl‐6‐isobutyl‐1,3,6,2‐dioxaza­boro­cane, C₂₄H₃₂BNO₂, (IV). These compounds may be useful in asymmetric reactions. In the structures reported here, the N—B donor–acceptor bond is longer than in any previously reported analogous compounds.     

Preparation,characterization and a kinetic study oftrans-[Ru(NH3)4L(H2O)](PF6)2 [L=PPh3, AsPh3, or SbPh3]

Summary The complexestrans-[Ru(NH₃)₄(H₂O)PPh₃](PF₆)₂ and [Ru(NH₃)₅L](PF₆)₂, (L=AsPh₃ or SbPh₃) have been isolated and characterized by microanalysis, cyclic voltammetry and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The specific rate constants for the aquation of [Ru(NH₃)₅L]²⁺ totrans-[Ru(NH₃)₄L(H₂O)]²⁺ are (2.5±0.1)×10^–5s^–1 and (1.8±0.1)×10^–5s^–1 for L=AsPh₃ and SbPh₃, respectively, at 25.0±0.1°C; =0.10 mol dm^–3, NaO₂CCF₃. Under the same conditions, the second-order rate constants for the substitution of water intrans-[Ru(NH₃)₄(H₂O)L]²⁺ by isonicotinamide (isn) are 1.2±0.1, (6.3±0.3)×10^–2 and (3.8±0.2)×10^–2 m ^–1s^–1 for L=PPh₃, AsPh₃, and SbPh₃, respectively, suggesting that the order of decreasingtrans-effect is: PPh₃AsPh₃>SbPh₃. The formation constants for thetrans-[Ru(NH₃)₄L(isn)]²⁺ complexes are 75±3, (1.40±0.01)×10³ and (1.80±0.02)×10³M^–1 for L=PPh₃, AsPh₃, and SbPh₃, respectively, suggesting that the order of increasingtrans-influence is: SbPh₃3PPh₃.     

Synthesis of bridged heteroaromatic compounds as reference standards for coal degradation products

The synthesis of 2-naphthyl 2′-dibenzothienyl ether, 1-(1′-naphthyl)-2-(4″-acridinyl)ethane and a series of naphthylethyldibenzothiophenes is reported.     

Application of diaza-18-crown-6-capped beta-cyclodextrin bonded silica particles as chiral stationary phases for ultrahigh pressure capillary liquid chromatography

Two bonded chiral stationary phases (CSPs), 8-aminoquinoline-2-ylmethyl- and 8-aminoquinoline-7-ylmethyl-diaza-18-crown-6-capped [3-(2-O-beta-cyclodextrin)-2-hydroxypropoxy]propylsilyl silica particles (non-porous, 1.5 microm), have been prepared and evaluated using capillary liquid chromatography at high pressures (> or = 8000 p.s.i.). High column efficiency (up to 400 000 plates m(-1)) was achieved for chiral separations. These CSPs with two recognition sites, i.e. substituted-diaza-18-crown-6 and beta-cyclodextrin combined with high chromatographic efficiency provide good resolution of a variety of enantiomers and positional isomers in relatively short times under reversed-phase conditions. After inclusion of a Ni (II) ion from the mobile phase, the positively charged crown ether-capped beta-cyclodextrin facilitates specific static, dipolar, and host-guest complexation interactions with solutes.     

The crystal structure of iododimethyl(trimethylamine)aluminum

The crystal structure of iododimethyl(trimethylamine)aluminium has been determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data collected by counter methods. I(CH₃)₂Al · N(CH₃)₃ crystallizes in the othorhombic space group Pnma with cell dimensions a=12.59(1), b=10.75(1), c=7.58(1)å, and p_calc=1.58 g·cm^?3 for Z=4. Least-squares refinement gave a final weighted R Value of 0.071 for 574 independet observed reflections. Each monomeric molecule lies on a crystallographic mirror plane with the trimethylamine and iododimethylaliminium groups in a staggered configuration about the aluminum  nitrogen bond.     

Syntheses of 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-acridinecarbaldehydes

The four acridinecarbaldehydes, namely, acridine-1-carbaldehyde, acridine-2-carbaldehyde, acridine-3-carbaldehyde, and acridine-4-carbaldehyde have been synthesized for the first time.     

Degradation of epoxy polymers: 2—Mechanism of thermal degradation of bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether

In a previous paper, some 15 compounds were positively identified among the products of thermal degradation of bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether. The structures of an additional 22 compounds, all aromatic, were speculated upon on the basis of mass spectral analysis. In the present paper, mechanisms are proposed to account for all these products and the characteristics of their formation in the overall degradation process.
