Effect of support on the synergy in HDS of thiophene and HDN of pyridine over Mo sulfide catalysts promoted by Rh

The effect of support (SiO₂-Al₂O₃, Al₂O₃,MgO) of the Rh-Mo(S) sulfide catalysts on the synergy in hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of thiophene and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of pyridine was studied. The synergy in HDS was between 7–10 regardless of the kind of support used. The synergy in HDN varied from none over the MgO supported sample to about 3 over SiO₂-Al₂O₃ supported catalyst, in accord with the positive effect of increasing support acidities. 2,8'-disubstituted-1,1'-binaphthyls: a new pattern in chiral ligands

The title binaphthyls 19 and 26, which are the positional isomers of 2-methoxy-2'-(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl (MOP, 19) and 2-amino-2'-hydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (NOBIN, 26), have been synthesized by Suzuki coupling as the key step (10 + 15-->18), followed by functional group transformations, involving C-P and C-N bond formation (18-->19 and 18-->23). Racemic intermediate 22 was resolved by co-crystallization with N-benzylcinchonidinium chloride and the absolute configuration determined by X-ray crystallography. These novel binaphthyls are configurationally stable and, as such, potentially usable as chiral ligands in asymmetric reactions. Michael addition of the glycine-derived enolate 40 to methyl acrylate, carried out in the presence of (R)-(-)-27 as the chiral phase-transfer catalyst, afforded L-glutamic acid (S)-(+)-43 of 92% ee (after hydrolysis of the primary product).     

Changes of organic acids and phenolic compounds contents in grapevine berries during their ripening

Changes of total content of phenolic substances, alteration in total titratable acidity and differences in tartaric acid content in grapes of four white (Müller-Thurgau — MT, Pinot Blanc — Rulandské bílé in Czech, RB, Sauvignon (Sg), and Muscat Ottonel — Mu?kát Ottonel in Czech, MO) and two blue (Dornfelder — Df and Blue Frankish — Frankovka in Czech, Fr) grapevine varieties throughout their growth, ripening and maturing (July–November). Potentiometric titration was applied for the determination of total titratable acids in grapes (expressed as tartaric acid equivalents in g L^?1). A spectrophotometric method according Rebelein based on the formation of a colored complex of ammonium metavanadate and tartaric acid was used for determination of tartaric acid in green juice made by pressing unripe grapes. A spectrophotometric method based on reduction of phosphomolybdato-tungsten complex in alkaline solution using Folin-Ciocalteau reagent was applied for determination of total content of phenolic substances (TCP).

Benzofurazane as a New Redox Label for Electrochemical Detection of DNA: Towards Multipotential Redox Coding of DNA Bases

Benzofurazane has been attached to nucleosides and dNTPs, either directly or through an acetylene linker, as a new redox label for electrochemical analysis of nucleotide sequences. Primer extension incorporation of the benzofurazane‐modified dNTPs by polymerases has been developed for the construction of labeled oligonucleotide probes. In combination with nitrophenyl and aminophenyl labels, we have successfully developed a three‐potential coding of DNA bases and have explored the relevant electrochemical potentials. The combination of benzofurazane and nitrophenyl reducible labels has proved to be excellent for ratiometric analysis of nucleotide sequences and is suitable for bioanalytical applications.     

Bottlebrush‐shaped copolymers with cellulose diacetate backbone by a combination of ring opening polymerization and ATRP

Graft copolymers with cellulose diacetate (CDA) backbone and both the poly(ε‐caprolactone) and polystyrene, or poly(butyl acrylate) or PMMA grafts were prepared by two‐step process. First, ε‐caprolactone (CL) was polymerized by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) initiated with CDA, partly funcionalized with 2‐bromo‐isobutyryl groups (degree of functionalization was 0.5). The p(CDA‐g‐CL) copolymers were used in the second step as polyfunctional macroinitiators of ATRP of the vinyl monomer, giving densely grafted copolymers with polyester and PSt, or PBuA, or PMMA grafts. The prepared copolymers were characterized by SEC, some of them also by FTIR spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. On Lipschitz and D.C. surfaces of finite codimension in a Banach space

Properties of Lipschitz and d.c. surfaces of finite codimension in a Banach space and properties of generated σ-ideals are studied. These σ-ideals naturally appear in the differentiation theory and in the abstract approximation theory. Using these properties, we improve an unpublished result of M. Heisler which gives an alternative proof of a result of D. Preiss on singular points of convex functions.

Electrochemical Activity of Wedelolactone and Probing its Interaction with DNA Using Voltammetry at a Carbon Electrode

Wedelolactone (WLA) is a polyphenolic coumestan derivative found in extracts of plants used in traditional medicine. Due to its cytostatic activity, WLA is one of natural compounds tested as potential anticancer drugs. In this work we for the first time studied electrochemical properties of WLA using cyclic (CV) and square‐wave (SWV) voltammetry at the basal‐plane pyrolytic graphite electrode. A reversible pair of peaks, corresponding to catechol/o‐benzoquinone redox system, was observed using CV around 0.275 V vs. Ag|AgCl|3 M KCl reference electrode. Measurements of SWV signal of WLA in the presence of single‐ or double‐stranded DNA suggested a weak interaction without evident preference for double‐stranded DNA. An indirect assay, employing electroactive DNA intercalator doxorubicin as competitor, confirmed absence of intercalative DNA binding of WLA.     

Tail-labelling of DNA probes using modified deoxynucleotide triphosphates and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase. Application in electrochemical DNA hybridization and protein-DNA binding assays

A simple approach to DNA tail-labelling using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase and modified deoxynucleoside triphosphates is presented. Amino- and nitrophenyl-modified dNTPs were found to be good substrates for this enzyme giving 3'-end stretches of different lengths depending on the nucleotide and concentration. 3-Nitrophenyl-7-deazaG was selected as the most useful label because its dNTP was efficiently incorporated by the transferase to form long tail-labels at any oligonucleotide. Accumulation of many nitrophenyl tags per oligonucleotide resulted in a considerable enhancement of voltammetric signals due to the nitro group reduction, thus improving the sensitivity of electrochemical detection of the tail-labelled probes. We demonstrate a perfect discrimination between complementary and non-complementary target DNAs sequences by tail-labelled hybridization probes as well as the ability of tumour suppressor p53 protein to recognize a specific binding site within tail-labelled DNA substrates, making the methodology useful in electrochemical DNA hybridization and DNA-protein interaction assays.     

Properties of distance functions on convex surfaces and applications

If X is a convex surface in a Euclidean space, then the squared intrinsic distance function dist²(x, y) is DC (d.c., delta-convex) on X×X in the only natural extrinsic sense. An analogous result holds for the squared distance function dist²(x,F) from a closed set F ⊂ X. Applications concerning r-boundaries (distance spheres) and ambiguous loci (exoskeletons) of closed subsets of a convex surface are given.
