A cobalt(III)-salen complex with an axial substituent in the diamine backbone: stereoselective recognition of amino alcohols

A cobalt(III)-salen complex (3) with an axial substituent on the diamine backbone has been synthesized. Crystal structure reveals that the axial substituent (p-nitrophenyl group) is positioned in close proximity to the metal binding site. The stereoselectivity of the cobalt complex for binding amino alcohols increases with increasing steric bulk of the amino alcohol from alaninol (2.9) to valinol (6.2) and t-leucinol (36.0).     

Synthesis, structures and comparative electrochemical study of 2,5-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl)thiophene coordinated cobalt carbonyl units

The reaction between 2,5-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl)thiophene and Co₂(CO)₈ or Co₂(CO)₆(X), (X = dppa, dppm), gave rise to the formation of substituted ethynylcobalt complexes containing one or two Co₂(CO)₆ or Co₂(CO)₄(X) units, 2-[Co₂(CO)₄(X){μ₂-η²-(SiMe₃)C₂}]-5-(Me₃SiCC)C₄H₂S (X = 2CO (1), dppa (3) or dppm (4)) and 2,5-[Co₂(CO)₄(X){μ₂-η²-SiMe₃C₂}]₂C₄H₂S (X = 2CO (2), dppa (5) or dppm (6)). Desilylation of the non-metallated and metallated alkynes in 3, 4 and 6 occurred on treatment with KOH and tetrabutylammonium fluoride to give 2-[Co₂(CO)₄(μ-X){μ₂-η²-SiMe₃C₂}]-5-(CCH)C₄H₂S (X = dppa (7), dppm (8)) and 2,5-[Co₂(CO)₄(μ-dppm){μ₂-η²-HC₂}]₂C₄H₂S (9), respectively. Crystals of 6 suitable for single-crystal X-ray diffraction were grown and the molecular structure of this compound is discussed. A comparative electrochemical study of all these complexes is presented by means of the cyclic and square-wave voltammetry techniques.     

Rhodium-catalyzed dehydrocoupling of the sterically encumbered phosphine-borane adduct tBu(2)PH.BH(3): synthesis of the linear dimers tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(3) and tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(2)Cl

The dehydrocoupling of the sterically hindered phosphine-borane adduct tBu(2)PH.BH(3) above 140 degrees C is catalyzed by the rhodium complexes [Rh(1,5-cod)(2)][OTf] or Rh(6)(CO)(16) to give the four-membered chain tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(3) (1), which was isolated in 60% yield and characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Thermolysis of 1 in the temperature range 175-180 degrees C led to partial decomposition and the formation of tBu(2)PH.BH(3). When the dehydrocoupling of tBu(2)PH.BH(3) was performed in the presence of [[Rh(mu-Cl)(1,5-cod)](2)] or RhCl(3) hydrate, the chlorinated compound tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(2)Cl (2) was formed which could not be obtained free of 1. The molecular structures of tBu(2)PH.BH(3), tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(3) (1), and tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(2)Cl (2) together with 1 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.     

Synthesis and Crystal Structures of Two Novel Anionic Aluminophosphates: A One-Dimensional Chain, UT-7 ([Al(3)P(5)O(20)H](5-)[C(7)H(13)NH(3)(+)](5)), and a Layer Containing Two Cyclic Amines, UT-8 ([Al(3)P(4)O(16)](3-)[C(4)H(7)NH(3)(+)](2)[C(5)H(10)NH(2)(+)])

UT-7 and UT-8 (University of Toronto, structure numbers 7 and 8) are two novel aluminophosphate materials prepared under non-aqueous conditions. Their structures, extended in one and two dimensions, respectively, have been solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and characterized by a variety of methods including powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), insitu high-temperature PXRD, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). UT-7 ([Al(3)P(5)O(20)H](5)(-)[C(7)H(13)NH(3)(+)](5), triclinic space group P&onemacr;, Z = 2, a = 10.118(3) ?, b = 15.691(4) ?, c = 18.117(3) ?, alpha = 72.91(2) degrees, beta = 85.18(2) degrees, gamma = 79.49(2) degrees ) is built of polymeric one-dimensional chain units, hydrogen-bonded into anionic layers that are charge-compensated by interlamellar cycloheptylammonium cations. UT-7 is isostructural to our previously discovered UT-3 chain structure, isolated in the analogous cyclopentylamine system. UT-8 ([Al(3)P(4)O(16)](3-)[C(4)H(7)NH(3)(+)](2)[C(5)H(10)NH(2)(+)], monoclinic space group P2(1), Z = 2, a = 8.993(4) ?, b = 14.884(8) ?, c = 9.799(9) ?, beta = 103.52(3) degrees ) is a two-dimensional net isostructural to several previously reported [Al(3)P(4)O(16)](3)(-) layers. The interlayer region of UT-8 is occupied by two different cyclic organic amine species, namely piperidinium and cyclobutylammonium. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the crystal structure of an aluminophosphate material containing cyclobutylammonium or a mixture of cyclic amines. Interestingly, UT-7 is observed to thermally transform in the solid state to an as yet unknown layered material that can be independently synthesized in a similar synthetic system. In the same way as UT-3 transforms to the UT-4 layered phase, we believe UT-7 transforms to a layered material by means of a chain to layer transformation.
