Links between microscopic and macroscopic fluid mechanics

The microscopic and macroscopic versions of fluid mechanics differ qualitatively. Microscopic particles obey time-reversible ordinary differential equations. The resulting particle trajectories {q(t)} may be time-averaged or ensemble-averaged so as to generate field quantities corresponding to macroscopic variables. On the other hand, the macroscopic continuum fields described by fluid mechanics follow irreversible partial differential equations. Smooth particle methods bridge the gap separating these two views of fluids by solving the macroscopic field equations with particle dynamics that resemble molecular dynamics. Recently, nonlinear dynamics have provided some useful tools for understanding the relationship between the microscopic and macroscopic points of view. Chaos and fractals play key roles in this new understanding. Non-equilibrium phase-space averages look very different from their equilibrium counterparts. Away from equilibrium the smooth phase-space distributions are replaced by fractional-dimensional singular distributions that exhibit time irreversibility.     

A synthetic, chloride-selective channel that alters chloride transport in epithelial cells

An Ussing chamber was used to demonstrate that synthetic amphiphilic anion transporters function as chloride transporters in mammalian airway epithelial cells.     

Gaussian Property of the Rings R(X) and R〈X〉

The content of a polynomial f over a commutative ring R is the ideal c(f) of R generated by the coefficients of f. A commutative ring R is said to be Gaussian if c(fg) = c(f)c(g) for every polynomials f and g in R[X]. A number of authors have formulated necessary and sufficient conditions for R(X) (respectively, R?X?) to be semihereditary, have weak global dimension at most one, be arithmetical, or be Prüfer. An open question raised by Glaz is to formulate necessary and sufficient conditions that R(X) (respectively, R?X?) have the Gaussian property. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the rings R(X) and R?X? in terms of the ring R in case the square of the nilradical of R is zero.     

Optical imaging of bacterial infection in living mice using a fluorescent near-infrared molecular probe

An optical imaging probe was synthesized by attaching a near-infrared carbocyanine fluorophore to an affinity group containing two zinc(II) dipicolylamine (Zn-DPA) units. The probe has a strong and selective affinity for the surfaces of bacteria, and it was used to image infections of Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli bacteria in living nude mice. After intravenous injection, the probe selectively accumulates at the sites of localized bacterial infections in the thigh muscles of the mice.     

Correlation of bilayer membrane cation transport and biological activity in alkyl-substituted lariat ethers

Dialkyldiaza-18-crown-6 lariat ethers having twin n-octyl, n-decyl, n-dodecyl, n-tetradecyl, n-hexadecyl, 1-oxodecyl and 1-oxododecyl side arms were prepared and studied. Cation transport in liposomes mediated by these compounds showed discontinuous activity that correlated with toxicity to the bacteria E. coli and B. Subtilis, and the yeast S. Cerevisiae. Transport, toxicity and membrane depolarization studies all suggest that side chain length affords very different interactions in a bilayer membrane compared with bulk phases. An explanation for activity in terms of carrier transport and restricted transverse relaxation is proposed.     

Synthetic ion channel activity documented by electrophysiological methods in living cells

Hydraphiles are synthetic ion channels that use crown ethers as entry portals and that span phospholipid bilayer membranes. Proton and sodium cation transport by these compounds has been demonstrated in liposomes and planar bilayers. In the present work, whole cell patch clamp experiments show that hydraphiles integrate into the membranes of human embryonic kidney (HEK 293) cells and significantly increase membrane conductance. The altered membrane permeability is reversible, and the cells under study remain vital during the experiment. Control compounds that are too short (C(8)-benzyl channel) to span the bilayer or are inactive owing to a deficiency in the central relay do not induce similar conductance increases. Control experiments confirm that the inactive channel analogues do not show nonspecific effects such as activation of native channels. These studies show that the combination of structural features that have been designed into the hydraphiles afford true, albeit simple, channel function in live cells.     

Solubilization chromatography: Ethers,carboxylic acids,and hydrocarbons

Synthetic mixtures of aliphatic and aromatic ethers, satmated fatty acids, and substituted benzenes and naphthalenes were separated by elution through columns of ion-exchange resins with aqueous solutions of acetic acid as eluent An attempt was made to use a resin of low capacity for the separation of such mixtures, and the results of this attempt are used to help elucidate the theory of solubilization chromatography     

Quantum dot probes for bacteria distinguish Escherichia coli mutants and permit in vivo imaging

Fluorescent quantum dots coated with zinc(ii)-dipicolylamine coordination complexes can selectively stain a rough Escherichia coli mutant that lacks an O-antigen element and permit optical detection in a living mouse leg infection model.
