Synthesis of Polyol Tetrabromophthalate and Its Use as a Component for Preparing Foamed Polyurethanes of Reduced Flammability

A procedure was suggested for preparing brominated polyols of reduced viscosity for the synthesis of foamed polyurethanes of reduced flammability. The flame-retarding action of the synthesized polyol tetrabromophthalate in polyurethane was studied in comparison with that of other widely used flame retardants. Evaluation of the effect exerted on the flammability of the polurethane compound by the polyol tetrabromophthalate synthesized, melamine, and aluminum hydroxide shows that all the samples containing flame retardants are self-extinguishing. The shortest combustion time was observed for the sample containing 6% polyol tetrabromophthalate synthesized. The sample containing as a flame retardant additive solely the synthesized polyole tetrabromophthalate also exhibits the highest performance as a heat-insulating material from the viewpoint of thermal conductivity.

     

Oxidative destruction of dinitrophenols by Fenton’s reagent in the presence of inorganic salts

The influence of inorganic salts on the kinetics of oxidation of 2,4-and 2,6-dinitrophenols by Fenton’s reagent, hydrogen peroxide, in the presence of iron(II) ions was studied.     

Organylthiochloroacetylenes: IX. Reactions with geminal and vicinal dithiols

Alkylthiochloroacetylenes react with geminal (in ether) and vicinal (in THF) dithiols to form, respectively, functional 1,3-dithiolenes (yield 43%) or 1,3-dithiolanes (yield 34%).     

A simple synthesis of (±)-2,6-dimethylocta-5(<Emphasis Type="Italic">Z</Emphasis>),7-diene-4-ol and its attractant activity for the bark beetle <Emphasis Type="Italic">Ips typographus</Emphasis>

Meldrum's acid and its analogs

2-Substituted or 2,2-disubstituted 4,6-dioxo-1,3-dioxanes, which are analogs of Meldrum's acid and were obtained by reaction of malonic acid with acetic anhydride and the appropriate carbonyl compound in the presence of sulfuric acid, exist in solution preferably in a single form according to the PMR and ¹³C NMR spectral data. Fluctuation of the CH₂ group is not observed. The mass spectra are characteristic and are distinguished by splitting out of the carbonyl compound from the molecular ion or successive splitting out of CO₂ and ketene molecules. The Meldrum acid analogs do not affect plant growth but have a depressive effect on the central nervous system of animals and low toxicity.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 11, pp. 1482–1486, November, 1975.     

Organoinorganic composites based on tetraethoxysilane and nitrogen polybases

Hybrid organoinorganic composites insoluble in water and organic solvents were prepared by the hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane in the presence of poly-1-vinylpyrazole, poly-1-vinylimidazole, and poly-4-vinylpyridine. The composition of the composites was determined by the nature of the polymeric nitrogen base and hydrolysis conditions. The composites synthesized showed high sorption activity in the extraction of the [PdCl₄]^2?, [PtCl₆]^2?, and [AuCl₄]^? ions from hydrochloric acid solutions.     

Mechanical properties of polyelectrolyte-filled multilayer microcapsules studied by atomic force and confocal microscopy

By using a combination of atomic force and confocal microscopy, we explore the deformation properties of multilayer microcapsules filled with a solution of strong polyelectrolyte. Encapsulation of polyelectrolyte was performed by regulation of the multilayer shell permeability in water-acetone solutions. The "filled"capsules prepared by this method were found to be stiffer than "hollow" ones, which reflects the contribution of the excess osmotic pressure to the capsule stiffness. The force-deformation curves contain three distinct regimes of reversible, partially reversible, and irreversible deformations depending on the degree of compression. The analysis of the shape of compressed capsules and of the inner polyelectrolyte spacial distribution allowed one to relate the deformation regimes to the permeability of the multilayer shells for water and inner polyelectrolyte at different stage of compression.     

IR-spectroscopic study of the structures of matrix-isolated complexes of amines with HCl and DCl

Volumetric properties of H2O, D2O, and methanol in acetonitrile at 278.15—318.15 K

The densities of H₂O, D₂O, and MeOH solutions in acetonitrile with the solute concentrations up to 0.07 molar fractions at 278.15, 288.15, 298.15, 308.15, and 318.15 K were measured using vibrating-tube densimetry with an error 8·10^–6 g cm^–3. The limiting partial molar volumes for the H/D isotopomers of water and IaII in acetonitrile (V^– ₂ ) and the isotope effects in V^– ₂ and in excess molar volumes of acetonitrile—water mixtures were calculated. Molecules of H₂O, D₂O, and IaII form associates with acetonitrile molecules via hydrogen bonds. The associates have the packing volumes close to those in the individual solute. The water and methanol molecules were assumed to be incorporated into the acetonitrile structure without substantial changes in the latter. However, this process results in some compression of the system with a simultaneous increase in its expansibility.
