Studies toward labeling cytisine with [11C]phosgene: rapid synthesis of a delta-lactam involving a new chemoselective lithiation-annulation method

With the aim of the radiolabeling of cytisine, a potent agonist of nicotinic receptors, with [(11)C]phosgene, the rapid synthesis of a lactam model of our target has been studied. The key step of the delta-lactam formation is a new chemoselective lithiation-annulation method, under high dilution, of a suitable piperidinylcarbamoyl chloride. This precursor was obtained from (2-hydroxyethyl)piperidine in a linear synthetic sequence involving a Corey-Fuchs olefination of the corresponding aldehyde, followed by a selective reduction, using a diimide equivalent, of an iodoalkyne into a (Z)-iodopropene piperidine. This alkene served as main precursor to study the cyclization according to several procedures using phosgene as the required carbonylating reagent.     

Latex Fractionation by Sedimentation and Colloidal Crystallization: The Case of Poly(styrene-co-acrylamide)

Poly(styrene-co-acrylamide) (PS-AAM) latex was prepared, fractionated by sedimentation under gravity, and characterized by PCS, infrared spectra, secondary and backscattered electron imaging in the scanning electron microscope, and electron spectroscopy imaging in an analytical transmission electron microscope. Three latex fractions were obtained. The lower fraction was opalescent and its particles were the more uniform, concerning size, chemical composition, and topochemical features. This lower fraction was still further fractionated by zonal centrifugation in a density gradient, yielding two fractions with similar macrocrystal-forming abilities but different sizes and chemical compositions. These results confirm those previously obtained for the PS-HEMA latex. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.

HCl adsorption on ice at low temperature: a combined X-ray absorption, photoemission and infrared study

The reaction of HCl on water ice provides a simple case for understanding dissociation and proton transfer in this non-optimal, incomplete solvation environment, playing a central role in atmospheric chemistry. This reaction has been repeatedly reported as thermally dependent, whereas the theoretical models predict a spontaneous dissociation. We examine the adsorption of HCl on ice at low temperature (50 K and 90 K) via a combination of near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) at the chlorine L-edge, photoemission (XPS and UPS), and reflection-adsorption infrared spectroscopy (FT-RAIRS). We show the complete dissociation of HCl into Cl(-) and H(+) through 3 hydrogen bonds, predominantly by direct reaction with water (80%) and by self-solvation (20%), in full agreement with the prediction of a barrierless process.     

5,6-dihydropyridine: synthesis and characterization

5,6-dihydropyridine 1 is synthesized either by flash vacuum thermolysis of 1-azabicyclo[2.2.2] oct-2-ene 3 or by dehydrochlorination over solid bases of N-chloro-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine 4 and characterized at low temperature by its ¹H and ¹³C nmr and ir spectra.
