Sulfite is often added to beverages as an antioxidant and antimicrobial agent. In fermented beverages, sulfite is also naturally produced by yeast cells. However, sulfite causes adverse health effects in asthmatic patients and accurate measurement of the sulfite concentration is therefore very important. Current sulfite analysis methods are time- and reagent-consuming and often require costly equipment. Here, we present a system allowing sensitive, ultralow-volume sulfite measurements based on a reusable glass-silicon microdroplet platform on which microdroplet generation, addition of enzymes through chemical-induced emulsion destabilization and pillar-induced droplet merging, emulsion restabilization, droplet incubation, and fluorescence measurements are integrated. In a first step, we developed and verified a fluorescence-based enzymatic assay for sulfite by measuring its analytical performance (LOD, LOQ, the dynamic working range, and the influence of salts, colorant, and sugars) and comparing fluorescent microplate readouts of fermentation samples with standard colorimetric measurements using the 5,5′-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) assay of the standard Gallery Plus Beermaster analysis platform. Next, samples were analyzed on the microdroplet platform, which also showed good correlation with the standard colorimetric analysis. Although the presented platform does not allow stable reinjection of droplets due to the presence of a tight array of micropillars at the fluidics entrances to prevent channel clogging by dust, removing the pillars, and integrating miniaturized pumps and optics in a future design would allow to use this platform for high-throughput, automated, and portable screening of microbes, plant, or mammalian cells.

A novel, all-optical method to excite and detect spin waves in magnetic materials is presented. By exploiting the temperature dependence of the magnetic anisotropy, an ultrashort laser pulse is efficiently converted in a picosecond "anisotropy field" pulse that triggers a coherent precession of the magnetization. Recording the temporal evolution of the precessing spins by a time-delayed probe-pulse provides a quantitative method to study locally the magnetic anisotropy, as well as switching and damping phenomena in micromagnetic structures. Applications to nickel and permalloy ( Ni80Fe20) films are discussed, particularly showing the possibility to explore standing spin waves in thin films.  相似文献

In order to optimize a 1.3 μm integrated optical isolator using a CoFe alloy for the non-reciprocal magneto-optical (MO) transverse Kerr effect, we have measured the optical and magneto-optical indices of Co90Fe10 and Co50Fe50 alloys grown in the Al2O3/Al/CoFe/GaAs multilayer structure. The optical reflectivity and MO rotation and ellipticity measurements were performed at variable incidence angle and s and p polarization of the incident light. In order to determine the optical and MO indices, the experimental data were fitted using a Matlab implementation of a standard multilayer Yeh formalism including multiple reflections. This original procedure allows precise determination of the optical and MO indices of CoFe alloys.  相似文献

In this study a double-bead sandwich assay, employing magnetic nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles is proposed. The magnetic nanoparticles allow specific capturing of the analyte in biological samples, while the optical properties of the gold nanoparticles provide the signal transduction. We demonstrated that a major improvement in the assay sensitivity was obtained by selecting an optimal gold nanoparticle size (60 nm). A detection limit of 5-8 ng/mL, a sensitivity of 0.6-0.8 (pg/mL)−1 and a dynamic range of 3 orders of magnitude were achieved without any further amplification using the detection of prostate specific antigen in serum as a model system. The proposed assay has the ability to be easily implemented within a microfluidic device for point-of-care applications whereby the readout can be executed by a fast and cheap optical measurement.  相似文献

We present experimental evidence of subgigahertz spin-transfer oscillations in metallic nanocontacts that are due to the translational motion of a magnetic vortex. The vortex is shown to execute large-amplitude orbital motion outside the contact region. Good agreement with analytical theory and micromagnetics simulations is found.  相似文献
