Ultrasound‐Assisted Construction of Halogen‐Bonded Nanosized Cocrystals That Exhibit Thermosensitive Luminescence

Multi‐component organic nanocrystals that are comprised of two or more supramolecular building blocks can be used to extend the design and assembly scope of solid molecular materials. Herein, we report the use of ultrasonication to prepare halogen‐bonded stilbene‐based nano‐cocrystals that exhibit different photoemission properties, including one‐ and two‐phonon emission and fluorescence lifetimes, relative to those of macrodimensional crystals. The structural transformation from nano‐cocrystals into nanocrystals upon heating results in a luminescence red‐shift from greenish blue to yellow. The temperature‐dependent ratiometric luminescence may allow such nano‐cocrystals to be used as fluorescent sensors and thermosensitive materials.     

Semiempirical versusab initio calculations of molecular properties

A comparative study of the structural parameters in some strained spirohydrocarbons is presented. The theoretical values provided by the STO-3G, MINDO/3 and IMOA methods are in reasonable agreement with each other and with available experimental data offering thus a posteriori justification of the employed approximate schemes.     

Synthesis of marine alkaloids leucettamines B and C by β-lactam ring rearrangement

A new method for the synthesis of marine alkaloids leucettamines B and C from Leucetta sp. sponges is described. The key step is the base-promoted rearrangement of β-lactam into imidazolone ring. Leucettamines B and C as well as their N-benzoyl derivatives were obtained in high yields. Single-crystal structures of both leucettamines B and C were determined by X-ray diffraction confirming Z-configuration of double bond at 4-position of imidazolone.     

Development and optimization of the SPE procedure for determination of pharmaceuticals in water samples by HPLC‐diode array detection

This paper focuses on the investigation of different types of SPE sorbents for the preconcentration of eight veterinary pharmaceuticals from water samples. The pharmaceuticals studied were sulfamethazine, sulfadiazine, sulfaguanidine, trimethoprim, oxytetracycline, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin and penicillin G/procaine. Five different SPE materials (Strata‐X, Strata‐X‐C, Strata SDB‐L, Strata C8 and Strata C18) from Phenomenex were compared with Oasis HLB with a view to obtaining the best cartridges for all pharmaceuticals investigated. Extraction efficiency was determined by HPLC with diode array detection (DAD). HPLC‐DAD separation and quantification of the selected pharmaceuticals were carried out under gradient elution by a binary mixture of 0.01 M oxalic acid and ACN based on cyano modified column (LiChrosphere 100 CN) from Merck. Strata‐X provided the best results in the preconcentration of 100 mL water samples, yielding average pharmaceutical recoveries of higher than 90%, except for sulfaguanidine (76.1%). The developed Strata‐X‐HLPC‐DAD method was validated and applied, for the efficient investigation of reverse osmosis/nanofiltration membranes and for the removal of these eight pharmaceuticals from the production wastewater samples. NF90 and XLE membranes were shown to be the best for the rejection of all investigated pharmaceuticals.     

Sustainable Synthesis of Chiral Tetrahydrofurans through the Selective Dehydration of Pentoses

L ‐Arabinose is an abundant resource available as a waste product of the sugar beet industry. Through use of a hydrazone‐based strategy, L ‐arabinose was selectively dehydrated to form a chiral tetrahydrofuran on a multi‐gram scale without the need for protecting groups. This approach was extended to other biomass‐derived reducing sugars and the mechanism of the key cyclization investigated. This methodology was applied to the synthesis of a range of functionalized chiral tetrahydrofurans, as well as a formal synthesis of 3R‐3‐hydroxymuscarine.     

Non-Stationary Abstract Friedrichs Systems

Inspired by the results of Ern et al. (Commun Partial Differ Equ 32:317–341, 2007) on the abstract theory for Friedrichs symmetric positive systems, we give the existence and uniqueness result for the initial- (boundary) value problem for the non-stationary abstract Friedrichs system. Despite the absence of the well-posedness result for such systems, there were already attempts for their numerical treatment by Burman et al. (SIAM J Numer Anal 48:2019–2042, 2010) and Bui-Thanh et al. (SIAM J Numer Anal 51:1933–1958, 2013). We use the semigroup theory approach and prove that the operator involved satisfies the conditions of the Hille–Yosida generation theorem. We also address the semilinear problem and apply the new results to a number of examples, such as the symmetric hyperbolic system, the unsteady div–grad problem, and the wave equation. Special attention was paid to the (generalised) unsteady Maxwell system.
