bis(nicotinamide) and bis(N,N-diethyl nicotinamide) p-hydroxybenzoate complexes of Ni(II), Cu(II) AND Zn(II)

The mixed-ligand p-hydroxybenzoate complexes of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) with nicotinamide and N,N-diethylnicotinamide were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility measurements and mass spectrometry. The thermal behavior of the complexes was studied by simultaneous TG, DTG and DTA methods in static air atmosphere. The infrared spectral characteristics of the complexes are also discussed. The complexes contain two water molecules, two p-hydroxybenzoato (p-hba) and two nicotinamide (na) (or diethylnicotinamide (dena)) ligands per formula unit. In these complexes, all ligands are coordinated to the metal ion as monodendate ligands. In Zn(II)-na and Cu(II)-dena complexes, thep-hydroxybenzoate behaves as bidentate chelating ligand through carboxylic oxygen atoms. The decomposition pathways and the stability of the complexes are interpreted in the terms of the structural data. The final decomposition products were found to be the respective metal oxides. Network images of drainage channels in sea spray icing by MR microscopy

An MR imaging system was developed to visualize brine drainage channels in sea spray icing. Brine pockets trapped in spray-ice matrices during ice growth are structural features of sea spray icing. Brine in the spray ice sample had drained out; therefore, using a suction pump, we filled the air gaps in the drainage channels with dodecane. In the experiments, 0.5-1.0 h was necessary to accumulate signals sufficient to obtain a 3-D micro-image; the image matrix comprised 128(3) voxels (each voxel was 200 microm per side). The MIP view showed that sea spray icing has a developed drainage-channel network structure.     

Diastereoselective photochromism of bisbenzothienylethenes with an oxycarbonyl-related functional group on the side chain

Nine 1-[2-(1-substituted)ethyl-3-benzothienyl]-2-(2-methyl-3-benzothienyl)hexafluorocyclopentenes (4-substituted benzoyloxy, N-arylcarbamoyloxy, and aryloxycarbonyloxy) were synthesized. They showed diastereoselective photochromic ring closure upon UV irradiation. Among them, 4-nitrophenoxycarbonyloxy-substituted compound recorded a remarkable 94% diastereomer excess with 91% conversion to the closed form.     

Effect of conjugated core building block dibenzo[a,c]phenazine unit on π‐conjugated electrochromic polymers: Red‐shifted absorption

A comparative investigation was undertaken for the electrosynthesis and electrochemical properties of three different electroactive polymers having a conjugated core building block, dibenzo[a,c]phenazine. A series of monomers has been synthesized as regards to thiophene based units; thiophene, 3‐hexyl thiophene, and 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene. The effects of different donor substituents on the polymers' electrochemical properties were examined by cyclic voltammetry. Introducing highly electron‐donating (ethylene dioxy) group to the monomer enables solubility while also lowering the oxidation potential. The planarity of the monomer unit enhances π‐stacking and consequently lowering the E_g from 2.4 eV (PHTP) to 1.7 (PTBP). Cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemical measurements revealed that 2,7‐bis(4‐hexylthiophen‐2‐yl)dibenzo[a,c]phenazine (HTP) and 2,7‐bis(2,3‐dihydrothieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxin‐5‐yl)dibenzo[a,c]phenazine (TBP) possessed electrochromic behavior. The colorimetry analysis revealed that while PTBP have a color change from red to blue, PHTP has yellow color at neutral state and blue color at oxidized state. Hence the presence of the phenazine derivative as the acceptor unit causes a red shift in the polymers' absorption to have a blue color. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dendronized polymers via Diels–Alder “click” reaction

A modular approach toward the synthesis of polymers containing dendron groups as side chains is developed using the Diels–Alder “click” reaction. For this purpose, a styrene‐based polymer appended with anthracene groups as reactive side chains was synthesized. First through third‐generation polyester dendrons containing furan‐protected maleimide groups at their focal point were synthesized. Facile, reagent‐free, thermal Diels–Alder cycloaddition between the anthracene‐containing polymer and latent‐reactive dendrons leads to quantitative functionalization of the polymer chains to afford dendronized polymers. The efficiency of this functionalization step was monitored using ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy and FTIR and UV–vis spectrometry. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of new donor-acceptor polymers containing thiadiazoloquinoxaline and pyrazinoquinoxaline moieties: low-band gap, high optical contrast, and almost black colored materials

Two low band gap conjugated polymers, poly[4,9-bis(4-hexylthien-2-yl)-6,7-di(thien-2-yl)-[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-g]quinoxaline] (PHTTQ) and poly[5,10-bis(4-hexylthien-2-yl)-2,3,7,8-tetra(thien-2-yl)pyrazino[2,3-g]quinoxaline] (PHTPQ), consisting of alternating electron-rich 3-hexylthiophene and electron-deficient 6,7-di(thien-2-yl)-[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-g]quinoxaline (TTQ) and 2,3,7,8-tetra(thien-2-yl)-2,3-dihydropyrazino[2,3-g]quinoxaline (TPQ) units were synthesized electrochemically. The structures of the π-conjugated monomers were tailored using thiophene as the pendant group on the acceptor units (TTQ and TPQ). The electrochemical and optical properties of the polymers were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy. The absorption spectra of PHTPQ, revealing a 1.0 eV band gap, exhibited three maxima at 352 nm, 535 nm, and 750 nm. Consequently, its absorption spectra cover the region between 400 and 800 nm, which make the polymer almost black in appearance. PHTTQ shows a λ_max value of 820 nm and a band gap of 0.8 eV which is very low among other [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-g]quinoxaline-containing donor-acceptor type polymers.     

Photodisintegration of the deuteron from 100 to 420 MeV

The differential cross section of the photodisintegration of the deuteron has been measured for photon lab. energies from 100 to 420 MeV. The protons were detected with a range telescope. Competing backgrounds due to pion photoproduction have been eliminated by detecting the coincident neutrons with a liquid scintillation counter.     

Hemoglobinopathy control program in Turkey

Hemoglobinopathies are a very important health problem in Turkey. To date many studies have been performed but there has been no national hemoglobinopathy control program (HCP). After the Turkish National Hemoglobinopathy Council (TNHC) was created all centers, foundations, and associations were combined into one organization controlled by the Ministry of Health (MOH). The MOH and the TNHC have started to register the results of the screening of 377,339 healthy subjects from 16 different cities and the recorded average frequency of the beta-thalassemia trait was 4.3%. The highest prevalence of thebeta-thalassemia trait (13.1%) was found in the Antalya region and of the HbS trait (10%) in the Cukurova region. Next, written regulations for the Fight against Hereditary Blood Disease were published especially for preventing and treating hemoglobinopathies. The MOH and the TNHC selected 33 provinces situated in the Thrace, Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean and South Eastern regions with a high birth prevalence of severe hemoglobinopathies. The hemoglobinopathy scientific committee was set up, a guidebook was published and a national HCP was started in these high-risk provinces.
