Silicon-29 diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) as a tool for studying aqueous silicates

The first use of silicon-29 diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) is reported, in a study of the speciation of aqueous silicates.     

Hot and solid gallium clusters: too small to melt

A novel multicollision induced dissociation scheme is employed to determine the energy content for mass-selected gallium cluster ions as a function of their temperature. Measurements were performed for Ga(+)(n) (n=17 39, and 40) over a 90-720 K temperature range. For Ga+39 and Ga+40 a broad maximum in the heat capacity-a signature of a melting transition for a small cluster-occurs at around 550 K. Thus small gallium clusters melt at substantially above the 302.9 K melting point of bulk gallium, in conflict with expectations that they will remain liquid to below 150 K. No melting transition is observed for Ga+17.     

Colour in visualisation for computational fluid dynamics

Colour is used in computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations in two key ways. First it is used to visualise the geometry and allow the engineer to be confident that the model constructed is a good representation of the engineering situation. Once an analysis has been completed, colour is used in post-processing the data from the simulations to illustrate the complex fluid mechanic phenomena under investigation. This paper describes these two uses of colour and provides some examples to illustrate the key visualisation approaches used in CFD.     

Molar extinction coefficients of some carbohydrates in aqueous solutions

Molar extinction coefficients of some carbohydrates viz. l-arabinose (C₅H₁₀O₅), d-glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆), d-mannose (C₆H₁₂O₆), d-galactose (C₆H₁₂O₆), d(-) fructose (C₆H₁₂O₆) and maltose (C₁₂H₂₄O₁₂) in aqueous solutions have been determined at 81, 356, 511, 662, 1173 and 1332 keV by gamma ray transmission method in a narrow beam good geometry set-up. These coefficients have been found to depend upon the photon energy following a 4-parameter polynomial. These extinction coefficients for different sugars having the same molecular formula have same values varying within experimental uncertainty. Within concentration ranges studied, Beer-Lambert law is obeyed very well.     

New reactions of deoxyvasicinone. Part 4

Analogues of deoxyvasicinone (1) in which the pyrrolo ring is substituted, enlarged, or attached to the a face of the quinazolone system were prepared and several reactions of these analogues with electrophilic reagents have been investigated.     

Dichlorocarbene Addition to

In contrast to the terminal phosphinidene complex PhPW(CO)(5) (2), which adds to [5]metacyclophane (1) in a 1,4-fashion, dichlorocarbene preferentially adds in a 1,2-fashion to the formal "anti-Bredt" type double bond of the aromatic ring of 1 to afford the norcaradiene 11b, which immediately rearranges to the bridged cycloheptatriene 12b and further by a [1,5] sigmatropic chlorine migration to the isomeric 13b as the first observable product. More slowly, the latter isomerizes via a dissociative mechanism to give 15b. A computational study supports the notion that the [1,5] chlorine migration in the rearrangement 12b --> 13b, for which an activation barrier of 70.2 kJ mol(-)(1) was calculated, is essentially concerted with minor charge separation. In contrast, the analogous [1,5] chlorine migration in the flat model compound 7,7-dichlorocycloheptatriene (12a) displays features of a dissociative pathway.     

New reactions of deoxyvasicinone

Deoxyvasicinone 1 was shown to react at the 3 position of the pyrrolidine ring with chloroformate esters and benzoyl choloride. Deuterium exchange at this site is also reported.     

Thermally Reversible Self‐Assembly of Nanoparticles via Polymer Crystallization

The directed self‐assembly of gold nanoparticles through the crystallization of surface‐grafted polyethylene oxide (PEO) in ethanol–water mixtures is described. This process is fully reversible and tunable through either the size of the core or the polymeric coating. Characterization by X‐ray scattering and electron microscopy of the self‐assembled structures reveals order at the nanoscale, typically not the case for thermoresponsive gold nanoparticles coated with lower or upper critical solution temperature polymers. A further novelty is the result of selective binding of calcium ions to the PEO in the fluid state: a reversible thermoresponsive transition become irreversible.

     

Magnetic resonance spin echo amplitudes at low rf fields

It is shown that for magnetic resonance the variation of spin echo amplitude with radio frequency (rf) field exhibits a fourth power law at the low rf limit. Depending on the line width and the pulse width, a cube law dependence may also be obtained, as has been reported for experimental measurements of ferromagnets.
