A study has been carried out on the kinetics of persulfate-initiated emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of an anionic (oleate) or mixed anionic-nonionic emulsifier. In both cases it appears that Smith-Ewart kinetics are obeyed, i.e., there is a constant-rate period up to 40–50% conversion, during which there is a concomitant constant molecular weight development. The sharp increases in molecular weight with conversion reported by Grancio and Williams appear to be an artifact resulting from the use of an impure emulsifier (Triton X-100), which acts as a chain transfer agent to reduce the molecular weight by approximately an order of magnitude. Hence there does not appear to be any kinetic justification for assuming an inhomogeneous swollen latex particle (“core-shell” morphology), and normal thermodynamic considerations should still apply to this swelling phenomemon.  相似文献

Caught in the act : An alkyl alkene ZrIV complex (see picture; Cp=C5H5) has been synthesized and characterized for the first time. The alkene bonding mode is highly asymmetric, and C2 is quite carbocationic. There is also evidence for rotation about the C1? C2 bond. This extremely unusual complex provides an exemplar of previously unknown intermediates in Ziegler–Natta and carbocationic polymerization reactions of alkenes.

As the first phase in the study of the emulsion polymerization of acenaphthylene (AcN), the oligomerization kinetics of the in-aqueous-phase soluble portion of the AcN monomer was investigated. The reactions were carried out in the absence and presence of anionic emulsifiers. The monomer disappearance rate was followed by ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy and spectra were established for these species. It was found that aqueous phase AcN oligomerized with K2S2O8 initiator at 50°C to yield SOK+ -ended oligo -AcN species which showed a UV hypsochromic shift in polar solvents. The oligomerization had a second-order dependence on monomer concentration. The presence of sodium oleate (SO) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) emulsifiers at below and above their critical micelle concentrations decreased the rate constant of the aqueous phase oligomerization. These observations led to the suggestion of a mixed micellization concept in the particle nucleation mechanism.  相似文献

Accuracy data (expressed as precision and trueness) presented by the authors of three different micro modifications of the Winkler titration procedure for dissolved oxygen concentration determination are critically evaluated. Tentative uncertainty estimates are extracted from the data based on the single-laboratory validation approach (originally published in the Nordtest Technical Report 537) and they lead to expanded uncertainty (k = 2) estimates in the range from 0.13 to 0.27 mg l−1 for the three procedures. It is demonstrated that, in all cases, the authors have presented the accuracy and/or precision estimates of the procedures in a way that can lead to too optimistic conclusions about the uncertainty of their procedures. This case study demonstrates the usefulness and flexibility of the single-laboratory validation approach to uncertainty estimation, even in the case of insufficient data, and can be of interest to laboratory workers dealing with measurement procedures from the literature. It is also expected to be of interest to university instructors of analytical chemistry and metrology in chemistry as a real-life example of the critical evaluation of the literature data. A high-accuracy Winkler titration method has been developed for determination of dissolved oxygen concentration. Careful analysis of uncertainty sources relevant to the Winkler method was carried out and the method was optimized for minimizing all uncertainty sources as far as practical. The most important improvements were: gravimetric measurement of all solutions, pre-titration to minimize the effect of iodine volatilization, accurate amperometric end point detection and careful accounting for dissolved oxygen in the reagents. As a result, the developed method is possibly the most accurate method of determination of dissolved oxygen available. Depending on measurement conditions and on the dissolved oxygen concentration the combined standard uncertainties of the method are in the range of 0.012–0.018 mg dm−3 corresponding to the k = 2 expanded uncertainty in the range of 0.023–0.035 mg dm−3 (0.27–0.38%, relative). This development enables more accurate calibration of electrochemical and optical dissolved oxygen sensors for routine analysis than has been possible before.  相似文献

Five well-defined polystyrene-block-polyoxyethylene copolymers were synthesized by anionic polymerization for use as stabilizers in the emulsion polymerization of styrene. The size of the blocks and their relative weight ratios to each other were the main variables. The molecular weights of the blocks varied from M?n = 1000–7000 for polystyrene, and M?w = 3000–9000 for polyoxyethylene. The results of the styrene emulsion polymerization with these block copolymers as stabilizers indicate that for efficient anchoring the block length need not be more than 10 monomer units, possibly even less, and that the polyoxyethylene block M?w = 3000 is just as capable of stabilizing the polystyrene particle as the higher molecular weight blocks. A very important factor was found to be the weight ratio of the two blocks: block copolymers with a polyoxyethylene content between 75 and 90 wt % were effective stabilizers for the emulsion polymerization of styrene © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The nucleation mechanism of styrene emulsion polymerization in the presence of the nonionic surfactant Emulphogene BC-840 was investigated. It was found that the conversion-time curves of this system show two rate regions. The change in rate occurs at ca. 40% conversion. Second-stage nucleation leads to a faster rate and consequently to a bimodally dispersed latex. The particle size distribution is relatively narrow before 40% conversion. The bimodally dispersed latex shows a bimodal molecular weight distribution in gel permeation chromatography and the results from fractional “creaming” of the latex indicate that the small-size particles contain the higher-molecular-weight polymer.  相似文献

In this report a gravimetric micro-Winkler titration method for determination of dissolved oxygen concentration in water is presented. Mathematical model of the method taking into account all influence factors is derived and an uncertainty analysis is carried out to determine the uncertainty contributions of all influence factors. The method is highly accurate: the relative expanded uncertainties (k = 2) are around 1% in the case of small (9-10 g) water samples. The uncertainty analysis carried out in characterizing the uncertainty of the method is the most comprehensive published for a micro-Winkler method, resulting in experimentally obtained estimates for all uncertainty sources of practical significance (around 20 uncertainty sources altogether).  相似文献
