Thermal analysis of glasses for proecological applications

Thermal behaviour and biochemical activity of potassium-silicate-phosphate glasses modified by addition of Ca, Mg, acting as ecological fertilisers of controlled release rate of the nutrients for plants were studied. It has been found that the biochemical activity of silicate-phosphate glasses depends on the nature and the number of components forming the glassy framework and is related to the thermal stability of glass demonstrated by the formation of new compounds during the process of crystallisation. It is proved that these seemingly different properties are determined by the same parameters which are the strengths bonds of glass network-formers and modifiers as well as their chemical affinity. Temperature Dependence of InSb Reflectivity in the Far Infrared: Determination of the Electron Effective Mass

We measured the dependence of the reflectivity of InSb crystals upon temperature in the submillimeter region using monochromatic radiation from an optically pumped far infrared (FIR) laser. The measures allowed us to determine the value of the electron effective mass at low temperatures with radiations of different frequencies. Our measurements extend the results obtained recently on pure crystals with magneto-optical methods to the low temperatures region where only old measures were available.     

New fir laser lines and frequency measurements from optically pumped13CD3OH3

We report the discovery of 57 new fir laser lines from¹³CD₃OH molecule optically pumped by a waveguide CO₂ laser of 300 MHz tunability. For all lines, precise frequency offset measurements between the CO₂ line center and the center of the absorbing¹³CD₃OH line were performed using the transferred Lamb-Dip technique. We have also measured directly the frequency of seven FIR laser lines by heterodyning with already known laser lines. We present a complete list of all known laser lines (134) and frequency measurements (24) for this molecule.Work supported by CNPq, FAPESP, FAEP-Brasil, and CNR-Italia     

Sulfur adsorption on Fe(1 1 0): a DFT study

The adsorption of atomic S on the Fe(1 1 0) surface is examined using density functional theory (DFT). Three different adsorption sites are considered, including the atop, hollow and bridge sites and the S is adsorbed at a quarter monolayer coverage in a p(2 × 2) arrangement. The hollow site is found to be the most stable, followed by the bridge and atop sites. At all three sites, S adsorption results in relatively minor surface reconstruction, with the most significant being that for the hollow site, with lateral displacements of 0.09 Å. Comparisons between S-adsorbed and pure Fe surfaces revealed reductions in the magnetic moments of surface-layer Fe atoms in the vicinity of the S. At the hollow site, the presence of S causes an increase in the surface Fe d-orbital density of states between 4 and 5 eV. However, S adsorption has no significant effect on the structure and magnetic properties of the lower substrate layers.     

Novel antibiotics: second generation macrocyclic peptides designed to trap Holliday junctions

Described are the syntheses of 15 macrocyclic peptides designed to trap Holliday junctions (HJs) in bacteria during site-specific and homologous recombination. This leads to inhibiting bacterial growth. These second generation macrocycles were based on the C-2 symmetrical HJ. They were synthesized using a strategy that permits elucidation of the amino acid role in binding HJs. The syntheses of these macrocycles are an important step in the development of a new class of antibiotics.     

Assignments of methanol laser lines by frequency measurements and Fourier transform spectroscopy

We have measured the frequencies of four CH₃OH far-infrared laser lines that were previously known only by wavelength measurement. Two of these lines turned out to be doublets, bringing the total number of measured lines to six. We can now confirm the assignments of five of them and definitely disprove the assignments proposed for the sixth.In particular we confirm the assignments for the four strong laser lines at 205 and 208 µm pumped by the 9-P(34) CO₂ laser line. These lines share a common upper level in the first excited CO-stretch state, and terminate in the upper and lower levels of a hybrid state with J=5. Heterodyne frequency measurements and conventional microwave spectroscopy show that both lines are split into two components approximately 3.5 MHz apart. The origin of this further splitting is interpreted as a perturbed K-splitting.Work supported by Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche -Italia     

Literal‐paraconsistent and literal‐paracomplete matrices

We introduce a family of matrices that define logics in which paraconsistency and/or paracompleteness occurs only at the level of literals, that is, formulas that are propositional letters or their iterated negations. We give a sound and complete axiomatization for the logic defined by the class of all these matrices, we give conditions for the maximality of these logics and we study in detail several relevant examples. Inversion of the exponential X-ray transform. I: Analysis

The exponential X-ray transform arises in single photon emission computed tomography and is defined on functions on ?ⁿ by , where μ is a constant. Approximate inversion, and inversion formulae of filtered back-projection type are derived for this operator in all dimensions. In particular, explicit formulae are given for convolution kernels (filters) K corresponding to a general point spread function E that can be used to invert the exponential X-ray transform via a filtered back-projection algorithm. The results extend and refine work of Tretiak and Metz¹⁷.     

Frequency and efficiency measurements on FIR laser lines close to the N+ 3 P 2−3 P 1 transition

FIR laser lines close to the N^{+ 3} P ₂–³ P ₁ transition at 122 m can be used as a local oscillator for heterodyne detectors. The frequencies of some candidate laser lines from CH₂F₂,¹³CH₃OH, CD₃OD, and CD₃OH have been measured and the output power of the most interesting lines has been optimized.     

A new interpretation of Hund's first rule

The diagonal elements of the first and second order spinless density matrices have been calculated for the lowest excited¹ P and³ P terms of Be, B⁺ and C⁺⁺ using wavefunctions at different levels of approximations published in the literature. The analysis of these functions has resulted in a new interpretation of Hund's first rule in terms of an anisotropic screening effect.
