The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of vocal problems in young choir singers and to correlate vocal problems with demographic and behavioral information. A questionnaire addressing vocal habits and hygiene was offered to 571 young choir singers, up to 25 years of age, who sing at least weekly; 129 (22.6%) responded. More than one-half of the respondents had experienced vocal difficulty, particularly older adolescents. Detrimental behaviors and circumstances surveyed were not reflective of the incidence of vocal difficulty, except for morning hoarseness, chronic fatigue, insomnia, and female gender after puberty. Voice care professionals should be aware that self-reported voice difficulties are common among young choral singers, especially postpubescent girls, and children with symptoms consistent with reflux (morning hoarseness) and emotional stress (insomnia). Laryngologists should communicate with choral conductors and singing teachers to enhance early identification and treatment of children with voice complaints, and to develop choral educational strategies that help decrease their incidence. 相似文献

This paper models a decision where a player must allocate limitedenergy over a contest of uncertain length. The motivating exampleis a squash match where one of the players is not as fit asthe other. Should a player's energy be concentrated in the earlygames of the match? Should it be spread evenly over all possiblegames? Or should it be conserved for the end of the match? Wemodel this as a decision problem where, in each game, the decision-makermust determine how much energy to expend. We assume that thereare only a small number of discrete energy choices for eachgame and that the more energy the decision-maker expends, themore likely he is to win that game. We solve for the optimaldecision with dynamic programming. With only two possible energychoices for each game, we show that it does not matter how energyis expended. In the case where there are three or more energychoices, we show how to take advantage of the structure of theproblem to determine the optimal sequence of decisions. As forpractical advice, the model suggests that when the decision-makerfalls behind in a match, he ought to switch to a more conservativeapproach by dividing his remaining energy evenly among all thepossible remaining games.

The effects of surface functionality and relative humidity (RH) on nanomechanical contact stiffness were investigated using atomic force acoustic microscopy (AFAM), a contact scanned-probe microscopy (SPM) technique. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with controlled surface energy were studied systematically in a controlled-humidity chamber. AFAM amplitude images of a micropatterned, graded-surface-energy SAM sample revealed that image contrast depended on both ambient humidity and surface energy. Quantitative AFAM point measurements indicated that the contact stiffness remained roughly constant for the hydrophobic SAM but increased monotonically for the hydrophilic SAM. To correct for this unphysical behavior, a viscoelastic damping term representing capillary forces between the tip and the SAM was added to the data analysis model. The contact stiffness calculated with this revised model remained constant with RH, while the damping term increased strongly with RH for the hydrophilic SAM. The observed behavior is consistent with previous studies of surface energy and RH behavior using AFM pull-off forces. Our results show that surface and environmental conditions can influence accurate measurements of nanomechanical properties with SPM methods such as AFAM. 相似文献

We present an overview of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) induced activation measurements. The LDEF, which was gravity-gradient stabilized, was exposed to the low Earth orbit (LEO) radiation environment over a 5.8 year period. Retrieved activation samples and structural components from the spacecraft were analyzed with low and ultra-low background HPGe gamma spectrometry at several national facilities. This allowed a very sensitive measurement of long-lived radionuclides produced by proton- and neutron-induced reactions in the time-dependent, non-isotropic LEO environment. A summary of major findings from this study is given that consists of directionally dependent activation, depth profiles, thermal neutron activation, and surface beryllium-7 deposition from the upper atmosphere. We also describe a database of these measurements that has been prepared for use in testing radiation environmental models and spacecraft design. 相似文献

The polymerization of styrene, initiated by lithium diethylamide in mixtures of benzene and THF, has been investigated. Kinetic and molecular weight measurements are interpreted on the basis of simultaneous initiation and propagation steps, and the effect of solvation and coordination processes on these reactions is discussed. Initiation of polymerization is thought to involve addition of solvated lithium diethylamide ion-airs to styrene, giving species with diethylamide end groups. The possible influence of these end groups on the initiation is considered in terms of an intramolecular cyclization process. Propagation of polymerization is believed to involve polystyryllithium ion-pairs, solvated to varying extents by THF. No evidence has been found to suggest that chain transfer, or termination, reactions are an integral part of the polymerization process. The polymerization has a number of similarities to the alkyllithium-initiated polymerization of styrene, but also exhibits some interesting differences. 相似文献
