Study of the peak effect phenomenon in single crystals of 2H-NbSe2

The weakly pinned single crystals of the hexagonal 2H-NbSe₂ compound have emerged as prototypes for determining and characterizing the phase boundaries of the possible order-disorder transformations in the vortex matter. We present here a status report based on the ac and dc magnetization measurements of the peak effect phenomenon in three crystals of 2H-NbSe₂, in which the critical current densities vary over two orders of magnitude. We sketch the generic vortex phase diagram of a weakly pinned superconductor, which also utilizes theoretical proposals. We also establish the connection between the metastability effects and pinning.     

Shaping Solid-State Supramolecular Cavities: Chemically Induced Accordionlike Movement of gamma-Zirconium Phosphate Containing Polyethylenoxide Pillars

The hydrophilic oxygen atoms of polyethylenoxide chains inserted as pillars in gamma-zirconium phosphate form hydrogen bonds with the acid groups of the host. As a result the pillars are almost perpendicular to the gamma layers. Upon changing the pH level of the supernatant solution the hydrogen bonds are broken and the pillars become almost perpendicular to the layers (shown schematically). Thus there is a reversible enlargement-shortening of the interlayer space.     

Multi-harmonic detection in wavelength modulation spectroscopy systems

Two multi-harmonic detection methods for wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) systems are presented and compared. The two possibilities discussed in this paper are: simultaneous curve fitting of multiple harmonic spectra, and reconstruction of the transmission from harmonic coefficients. The optimum number of harmonics is four and 25 harmonics, respectively. Compared with standard single-harmonic curve fitting, the methods give about a factor of 3 better performance than standard second-harmonic curve fitting. Concluding, multi-harmonic detection is better than single-harmonic detection and should be used if the system bandwidth is high enough to allow for proper detection of the higher harmonics.     

Nonacid cleavable detergents applied to MALDI mass spectrometry profiling of whole cells

Although cleavable detergents were first synthesized a number of years ago, they have only recently been successfully applied to problems involving biological molecules. Recent reports have demonstrated that these compounds are useful for applications involving both 2D PAGE and mass spectrometry. However, most cleavable surfactants have utilized acid-labile functional groups to affect cleavage. In applications where extreme pH is required, acid cleavable detergents have limited usefulness. We report the synthesis of fluoride cleavable silane compounds and photolabile cinnamate esters as cleavable detergents having alternative cleavage chemistries than previously reported cleavable detergents. These compounds were applied to whole cell analysis using MALDI mass spectrometry, and it was demonstrated that their use results in an increase in the number of proteins analyzed by increasing protein solubility.
