This study examines the difficulties college students experience when creating and interpreting graphs in which speed is one of the variables. Nineteen students, all preservice elementary or middle school teachers, completed an upper‐level course exploring algebraic concepts. Although all of these preservice teachers had previously completed several mathematics courses, including calculus, they demonstrated widespread misconceptions about the variable speed. This study identifies four cognitive obstacles held by the students, provides excerpts of their graphical constructions and verbal interpretations, and discusses potential causes for the confusion. In particular, misconceptions arose when students interpreted the behavior and nature of speed within a graphical context, as well as in situations where they were required to construct a graph involving speed as a variable. The study concludes by offering implications for the teaching and learning of speed and its interpretation within a graphical setting.  相似文献

In this paper, molecular dynamics simulation was performed to investigate the liquid∕vapor interfacial structure of neat polar liquids. Large-scale ensembles of liquid pyridine and its alkyl derivatives, 4-methylpyridine and 4-ethylpyridine, were simulated by classical molecular dynamics at 298 K. For the liquid system of low polarity, the surface density profile of the atoms meet exactly at the middle of interfacial region, and atoms of hydrophobic nature can be hardly discriminated from hydrophilic ones in either vapor or liquid sides. For a liquid system of high polarity, the density profile of atoms with different nature is highly discriminated all over the interfacial region, and as the polarity increases, a dense region of atomic density is clearly developed in the subsurface region. The recognized bivariate method was also used to study the molecular orientational distribution quantitatively. Orientational analysis of the three liquid systems indicates that the pyridine ring plane in the outmost surface tends to be vertical. Its tendency in the innermost interfacial region is parallel. The orientational states available to 4-ethylpyridine and pyridine are discriminated by predicting the possibility of a bisector-wise tumbling for the ring plane in pyridine and a side-wise tumbling in 4-ethylpyridine. The orientational distribution maps explain the trend of experimental surface tension and surface entropy. As the dipole moment of these liquids increases with the alkyl chain length, the surface structural profile changes from a regular definite one to a surface of complex atomic structure involving a dense phase near the interface. The development of dense region in alkyl derivatives is the result of segregation of molecules due to the alkyl group, which is captured and discriminated by molecular dynamics simulation even when the length of a short alkyl chain is increased by one carbon atom.  相似文献

This paper deals with preemptive priority based multi-objective network design problems in which construction times together with travel costs are taken into account. These cost and time objective functions are ordered lexicographically with respect to manager’s strategies in order to decrease total cost and total construction time of the network. To solve this preemptive problem, instead of the standard sequential approach, a modified Benders decomposition algorithm is developed. It is proved that this algorithm decreases the (expected) number of computations and so this algorithm is efficient for large-scale network design problems.  相似文献

Ab initio Car-Parinnello molecular dynamics is used to simulate the structure and the dynamics of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([bmim]I) ionic liquid at 300 K. Site-site pair correlation functions reveal that the anion has a strong interaction with any three C-H's of the imidazolium ring. The ring bends over and wraps around the anion such that the two nitrogen atoms take a distance to the anion. Electron donating butyl group contributes the electronic polarization in addition to geometrical (out-of-plane) polarization of the ring due to the liquid environment. This facilitates bending of the ring along the axis passing through nitrogen atoms. The average bending angle depends largely on the alkyl chain length and slightly on the anion type. Redistribution of electron density over the ring caused by the electron donating alkyl group provides additional independent evidence to the instability of lattice structure, hence the low melting point of the ionic liquid. Simulated viscosity and diffusion coefficients of [bmim]I are in quite agreement with the experiments.  相似文献

Fast atom bombardment, combined with high-energy collision-induced tandem mass spectrometry, has been used to investigate gas-phase metal-ion interactions with captopril, enalaprilat and lisinopril, all angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.Suggestions for the location of metal-binding sites are presented. For captopril, metal binding occurs most likely at both the sulphur and the nitrogen atom. For enalaprilat and lisinopril, binding preferably occurs at the amine nitrogen. This paper describes a rapid technique for reconstruction of the internal area function of a duct using blockage-induced eigenvalue shifts determined from eigenfrequencies measured under two sets of duct termination boundary conditions. A single broad band maximum length sequence (MLS) measurement of short duration is utilized to obtain the transfer function of the duct, which in turn can be utilized to determine its eigenvalue shifts and subsequently its internal area function using an inverse perturbation technique. The reconstruction results display the same order of accuracy as those obtained previously using swept sine measurements of extended duration. An expression for the determination of the area function is presented utilizing resonant frequency information alone, thus rendering duct length determination unnecessary. A computational routine further simplifies the process such that the accuracy of the technique could be ascertained for a range of configurations including longer ducts and ducts that initially have nonuniform internal cross section over their length. Development of a relationship between obstacle length and wavelength of the lowest eigenfrequency required for successful reconstruction is also described. This is an important result for longer ducts where measurement of lower eigenfrequencies may present problems using standard measurement equipment.  相似文献

This study demonstrates that the transport properties of alkali metals are determined principally by the repulsive wall of the pair interaction potential function. The (hard-wall) Lennard-Jones (LJ) (15-6) effective pair potential function is used to calculate the transport collision integrals. Accordingly, reduced collision integrals of K, Rb, and Cs metal vapors are obtained from the Chapman-Enskog solution of the Boltzmann equation. The law of corresponding states based on the experimental transport reduced collision integral is used to verify the validity of a LJ(15-6) hybrid potential in describing the transport properties. LJ(8.5-4) potential function and a simple thermodynamic argument with the input PVT data of liquid metals provide the required molecular potential parameters. Values of the predicted viscosity of monatomic alkali metal vapor are in agreement with typical experimental data with average absolute deviations of 2.97% for K in the range of 700-1500 K, 1.69% for Rb, and 1.75% for Cs in the range of 700-2000 K. In the same way, the values of predicted thermal conductivity are in agreement with experiment within 2.78%, 3.25%, and 3.63% for K, Rb, and Cs, respectively. The LJ(15-6) hybrid potential with a hard-wall repulsion character conclusively predicts the best transport properties of the three alkali metal vapors.  相似文献

The place of fuzzy concepts in traffic assignment (TA) models has been studied in recent literature. Keeping fuzzy level of travel demand in mind, we propose a new TA model in which the travel costs of links are depended on their congestion. From the results of such fuzzy TA model, network planners are able to estimate the number of travelers on network links. By using zero–one variables, the proposed model is transformed into a crisp mixed-integer problem with respect to path-flow variables. In order to produce the Logit flows from this problem, Damberg et al. algorithm is modified. Then, the level of certainty is maximized and perceived travel delays are minimized. For a fixed certainty degree, the obtained solution, which is named the fuzzy equilibrium flow, satisfies a quasi-Logit formula similar to ordinary expression of the Logit route choice model. Eventually, we examine the quality of different path enumeration techniques in the proposed model.  相似文献
