Sub-bundles of the complexified tangent bundle

We study embeddings of complex vector bundles, especially line bundles, in the complexification of the tangent bundle of a manifold. The aim is to understand implications of properties of interest in partial differential equations.

     

Structural conversions of rhodamines in solution

A study has been made of the acidic ionization, structural conversions, and prototropic tautomerism of rhodamine chromogens in methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide, using IR, ¹³ C NMR, and electronic spectroscopy. The lactone structure has been established for the colorless form of rhodamines in DMSO. For rhodamine B in mixtures of water with DMSO, the lactone/zwitterion ratio has been estimated.V. I. New classes of 2-weight cyclic codes

We introduce new classes of 2-weight cyclic codes which are direct sums of 1-weight irreducible cyclic codes      

Commutators of singular integrals on spaces of homogeneous type

In this work we prove some sharp weighted inequalities on spaces of homogeneous type for the higher order commutators of singular integrals introduced by R. Coifman, R. Rochberg and G. Weiss in Factorization theorems for Hardy spaces in several variables, Ann. Math. 103 (1976), 611–635. As a corollary, we obtain that these operators are bounded on L ^p (w) when w belongs to the Muckenhoupt’s class A _p , p > 1. In addition, as an important tool in order to get our main result, we prove a weighted Fefferman-Stein type inequality on spaces of homogeneous type, which we have not found previously in the literature.     

SOLVENT EFFECTS ON THE TAUTOMERIZATION OF 5′-DEOXYPYRIDOXAL. A PHOTOPHYSICAL STUDY

Abstract— Absorption and fluorescence spectra of 5′-deoxypyridoxal (DPL) in various pure solvents and mixtures were recorded both at room temperature and over the range10–65°C. The areas under the absorption bands were analyzed to obtain the mole fraction (f_N, f_z) of two tautomers (the zwitterionic, Z, and neutral, N, forms) in the ground state. The following spectral parameters were determined from the fluorescence spectra: Stokes shift (Δv), fluorescence quantum yield of the neutral form (Q_N), fluorescence ratio of the neutral to the zwitterionic form (ø_N/ø_Z) and the rate constant of tautomerization (k₁) from Z to N in the excited state. Some of these parameters (f_N, Δv, Q_N, k₁) were found to depend on the proton donor character of the solvent, whereas others (ø_N/ø_Z) depended on its dipole moment. Thus, the absorption and fluorescence spectra of DPL allow one to obtain information on the polarity and the concentration of –OH groups on its environment.     

Optimization of a New Extraction Technique for Analysis of Verbenone and cis-Verbenol in Pine Seeds

Results from a systematic study of the factors affecting extraction of cis-verbenol and verbenone from pine seeds are presented. Five extraction conditions were investigated: extraction solvent, method of extraction, extraction temperature, volume of solvent, and the ratio of the mass of sample to the amount of extraction solvent. The resulting optimized method uses magnetic-stirring-assisted extraction of pine seeds (5 g) with ethyl acetate (75 mL) for 20 min, at room temperature. RSDs were less than 5% for both compounds. GC–FID was used for quantification of cis-verbenol and verbenone in the extracts.     

Development of a multiplex microarray microsystem

A hybrid multiplex microarray microsystem has been developed that consists of 32 individually addressable array reaction chambers, supporting the use of multichannel pipettes for addition of up to 8 samples simultaneously. Discrimination between Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli bacteria was observed in DNA samples containing Campylobacter spp., with the same specificity and sensitivity as when compared to a full-size microarray. The spinloaded multiplex microarray microsystem described provides a novel and convenient test format for simultaneous low-density microarray analysis and is universally adaptable to other DNA, protein or small molecule microarray based applications.     

On the Stability of the Schiff Bases of Pyridoxal 5′-Phosphate with Polypeptides Containing L-Lysine

We determined the apparent equilibrium constant of formation, K_pH, of the Schiff bases of pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP) and poly- and copolymers containing L -lysine, as a function of pH at 25° and a constant ionic strength of 0.1 M . The K_pH values obtained at acidic and neutral pH were larger that those reported for Schiff bases of PLP and hexylamine. We determined calorimetrically ΔH of formation of Schiff bases of PLP and poly(L -lysine) (?4.5′kcal/mol), and PLP and hexylamine (?3.4 kcal/mol) at pH 7.00. Semi-empirical theoretical calculations (INDO and AMI methods) of a model compound of Schiff base of PLP and polypeptide containing L -lysine show the capability of specific interactions between groups of PLP and the peptide skeleton.
