Electrophile-mediated cyclizations in carbohydrate chemistry: synthesis of highly functionalized ribofuranose and ribopyranose compounds

Iodine-mediated cyclization of (Z)- and (E)-{=D}-ribohept-2-enonates $\text{1}$ and $\text{2}$ gave exclusively the β-ribofuranose and α-ribofuranose derivatives $\text{3}$ and $\text{4}$, respectively. Cyclization of the (Z)- and (E)-2-heptene-1-ol derivatives $\text{5}$ and $\text{6}$ gave ribofuranose products ($\text{7}$ and $\text{8}$) and a ribopyranose ($\text{9}$), respectively.     

Chemical ionization and electron impact mass spectra of thiosulfinates,thiosulfonates and sulfinyl sulfones

The chemical ionization and electron impact mass spectra of some thiosulfinates, thiosulfonates and sulfinyl sulfones have been studied. The electron impact mass spectra of four of the six thiosulfonates show molecular ions of less than 1%. Inconclusive evidence was obtained for sulfenyl sulfinate type intermediates in the electron impact spectra of thiosulfonates. The electron impact spectra of thiosulfonates were similar to those of thiosulfonates. The chemical ionization (isobutane) mass spectra of thiosulfinates and thiosulfonates generally show protonated molecular ions [MH]⁺ as base peaks and [MH+1]⁺ and [MH+2]⁺ peaks.     

Formation of sulfines in the peroxyacid oxidation of neopentyl neopentanethiolsulfinate

Low temperature ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR, and IR suggest that the $\text{m}$-chloroperbenzoic acid (MCPBA) oxidation of neopentyl neopentanethiolsulfinate leads to the formation of (E)- and (Z)-2,2-dimethylpropanethial S-oxide, neopentyl neopentanethiolsulfonate, and other products.     

Perturbation calculation of correlation energies for polyatomic molecules I. Initial results

The calculation of correlation energies for polyatomic molecules is discussed. Four second-order perturbation expressions are considered; only the simplest, a Rayleigh-Schroedinger expansion with the Moller-Plesset partitioning of the Hamiltonian is invariant to an arbitrary mixing of degenerate orbitals and has the correct dependence on the number of particles. In the absence of degeneracies an iterative Brillouin-Wigner method is proposed. Calculations predict that correlation effects favor the non-classical form of carbonium ions.     

Reflexive linear transformations

A linear operator A is called reflexive if the only operators that leave invariant the invariant subspaces of A are the operators in the weak closure of the algebra of polynomials in A. In this note we completely characterize reflexive operators on finite-dimensional spaces.     

Equisetin biosynthesis in Fusarium heterosporum

An iterative polyketide synthase-peptide synthetase hybrid assembles the HIV-1 integrase inhibitory tetramic acid, equisetin, in the filamentous fungus Fusarium heterosporum.     

Synthesis and characterization of photoluminescent In-doped CdSe nanoparticles

Indium-doped CdSe nanoparticles have been synthesized and characterized. Their light absorption, photoluminescence, and structure are similar to undoped CdSe nanoparticles. The greater part of the In associated with the nanoparticles is removed when the nanoparticles undergo ligand exchange by pyridine. As observed with undoped nanoparticles, a ZnS capping layer on the indium-doped nanoparticles results in enhanced nanocrystal photoluminescence. Also, the ZnS cap enhances the retention of In by the nanoparticles. Elemental analysis shows ligand exchange causes CdSe to be lost and capping with ZnS results in the loss of Se. We conclude that In-doped nanoparticles have most of the In on their surface, capping helps the nanoparticles retain the In, and they do not have altered electronic properties.     

Polyelectrolytes as new matrices for secondary ion mass spectrometry

Significant enhancements in ion yields in time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) are observed when water-soluble analytes are mixed with a polyelectrolyte, e.g., poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) or poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate), and then deposited in the layer-by-layer method on a surface. This previously unobserved effect is demonstrated for 5-chloro-8-methoxyquinoline appended diaza-18-crown-6, 5-(2-aminoethoxy)methyl-5-chloro-8-methoxyquinoline appended diaza-18-crown-6, acridine, 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid, and ferrocenecarboxylic acid. By optical ellipsometry film thicknesses range from ca. 5-20 angstroms. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows significantly less analyte in the polyelectrolyte-analyte films than in the neat analytes. However, TOF-SIMS generally shows significant enhancements in ion yields from the polyelectrolyte films compared with either the neat compounds or the compounds solubilized with acid or base and then dried on a surface. These significant enhancements in ion yields also appear to extend to analyte fragments and cationized molecular species. Some enhancement is also observed for dried droplets of analytes mixed with a polyelectrolyte on surfaces.
