We present a molecular model for ferrous-ferric electron transfer in an aqueous solution that accounts for electronic polarizability and exhibits spontaneous cation hydrolysis. An extended Lagrangian technique is introduced for carrying out calculations of electron-transfer barriers in polarizable systems. The model predicts that the diabatic barrier to electron transfer increases with increasing pH, due to stabilization of the Fe3+ by fluctuations in the number of hydroxide ions in its first coordination sphere, in much the same way as the barrier would increase with increasing dielectric constant in the Marcus theory. We have also calculated the effect of pH on the potential of mean force between two hydrolyzing ions in aqueous solution. As expected, increasing pH reduces the potential of mean force between the ferrous and ferric ions in the model system. The magnitudes of the predicted increase in diabatic transfer barrier and the predicted decrease in the potential of mean force nearly cancel each other at the canonical transfer distance of 0.55 nm. Even though hydrolysis is allowed in our calculations, the distribution of reorganization energies has only one maximum and is Gaussian to an excellent approximation, giving a harmonic free energy surface in the reorganization energy F(DeltaE) with a single minimum. There is thus a surprising amount of overlap in electron-transfer reorganization energies for Fe(2+)-Fe(H2O)6(3+), Fe(2+)-Fe(OH)(H2O)5(2+), and Fe(2+)-Fe(OH)2(H2O)+ couples, indicating that fluctuations in hydrolysis state can be viewed on a continuum with other solvent contributions to the reorganization energy. There appears to be little justification for thinking of the transfer rate as arising from the contributions of different hydrolysis states. Electronic structure calculations indicate that Fe(H2O)6(2+)-Fe(OH)n(H2O)(6-n)(3-n)+ complexes interacting through H3O2- bridges do not have large electronic couplings.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to address uncertainties in the solubility product of (UO2)3(PO4)2⋅4H2O(c) and in the phosphate complexes of U(VI), and more importantly to develop needed thermodynamic data for the Pu(VI)-phosphate system in order to ascertain the extent to which U(VI) and Pu(VI) behave in an analogous fashion. Thus studies were conducted on (UO2)3(PO4)2⋅4H2O(c) and (PuO2)3(PO4)2⋅4H2O(am) solubilities for long-equilibration periods (up to 870 days) in a wide range of pH values (2.5 to 10.5) at fixed phosphate concentrations of 0.001 and 0.01 M, and in a range of phosphate concentrations (0.0001–1.0 M) at fixed pH values of about 3.5. A combination of techniques (XRD, DTA/TG, XAS, and thermodynamic analyses) was used to characterize the reaction products. The U(VI)-phosphate data for the most part agree closely with thermodynamic data presented in Guillaumont et al.,(1) although we cannot verify the existence of several U(VI) hydrolyses and phosphate species and we find the reported value for formation constant of UO2PO4 is in error by more than two orders of magnitude. A comprehensive thermodynamic model for (PuO2)3(PO4)2⋅4H2O(am) solubility in the H+-Na+-OH-Cl-H2PO4-HPO2−4-PO3−4-H2O system, previously unavailable, is presented and the data shows that the U(VI)-phosphate system is an excellent analog for the Pu(VI)-phosphate system.  相似文献

An electrodynamics-based model was formulated for simulation of ion diffusion in microbial polysaccharides. The fixed charges and electrostatic double layers that may associate with microbial polysaccharides and their effects on ion diffusion were explicitly built into the model. The model extends a common multicomponent ion diffusion formulation that is based on irreversible thermodynamics under a zero ionic charge flux condition, which is only applicable to the regions without fixed charges and electrostatic double layers. An efficient numerical procedure was presented to solve the differential equations in the model. The model well described key features of experimental observations of ion diffusion in negatively charged microbial polysaccharides including accelerated diffusive transport of cations, exclusion of anions, and increased rate of cation transport with increasing negative charge density. The simulated diffusive fluxes of cations and anions were consistent with a cation exchange diffusion concept in negatively charged polysaccharides at the interface of plant roots and soils; and the developed model allows to mathematically study such diffusion phenomena. An illustrative example was also provided to simulate dynamic behavior of ionic current during ion diffusion within a charged bacterial cell wall polysaccharide and the effects of the ionic current on the compression or expansion of the bacterial electrostatic double layer at the interface of the cell wall and bulk solution.  相似文献

The solubility of NdPO4(c) was studied at 23±2 °C from both the over and undersaturation directions, with pH ranging from 0 to 9, P concentrations ranging from 0.0003 to 1.00M, and equilibration periods ranging from 6 to 57 days. Equilibrium was reached in <6 days. From the H+, Nd, and P concentrations in equilibrated solutions, the logarithm of the thermodynamic equilibrium constant for the reaction (NdPO4(c) Nd3++PO4 3-) was calculated to be -24.65±0.23 and the value of the Pitzer ion-interaction parameter (2)for Nd3+-H2PO4 - was determined to be -92.9. Predictions based on these thermodynamic quantities were in excellent agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

This article reviews some of the applications of physics to the solution of archaeological problems. The use of magnetic, resistivity and electromagnetic surveying techniques for the location of buried features is described. Various methods of age determination are outlined while the problems associated with radiocarbon dating of organic material and thermoluminescent dating of pottery are discussed in detail. The techniques, including petrological examination, chemical analysis and isotopic analysis, employed in the physical examination of archaeological artefacts are described. Examples of the application of these techniques in establishing the source of the raw materials used in pottery, metal and stone implements and in elucidating the techniques of manufacture of pottery and metal objects are also given.  相似文献

In this study, methanol extracts (MEs) and essential oil (EO) of Angelica purpurascens (Avé-Lall.) Gill obtained from different parts (root, stem, leaf, and seed) were evaluated in terms of antioxidant activity, total phenolics, compositions of phenolic compound, and essential oil with the methods of 2,2-azino-bis(3ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS•+), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH•) radical scavenging activities, and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP), the Folin–Ciocalteu, liquid chromatography−tandem mass spectrometry (LC−MS/MS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC−MS), respectively. The root extract of A. purpurascens exhibited the highest ABTS•+, DPPH•, and FRAP activities (IC50: 0.05 ± 0.0001 mg/mL, IC50: 0.06 ± 0.002 mg/mL, 821.04 ± 15.96 µM TEAC (Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity), respectively). Moreover, EO of A. purpurascens root displayed DPPH• scavenging activity (IC50: 2.95 ± 0.084 mg/mL). The root extract had the highest total phenolic content (438.75 ± 16.39 GAE (gallic acid equivalent), µg/mL)). Twenty compounds were identified by LC−MS/MS. The most abundant phenolics were ferulic acid (244.39 ± 15.64 μg/g extract), benzoic acid (138.18 ± 8.84 μg/g extract), oleuropein (78.04 ± 4.99 μg/g extract), and rutin (31.21 ± 2.00 μg/g extract) in seed, stem, root, and leaf extracts, respectively. According to the GC−MS analysis, the major components were determined as α-bisabolol (22.93%), cubebol (14.39%), α-pinene (11.63%), and α-limonene (9.41%) among 29 compounds. Consequently, the MEs and EO of A. purpurascens can be used as a natural antioxidant source.  相似文献

The interaction of anhydrous supercritical CO(2) (scCO(2)) with both kaolinite and ~1W (i.e., close to but less than one layer of hydration) calcium-saturated montmorillonite was investigated under conditions relevant to geologic carbon sequestration (50 °C and 90 bar). The CO(2) molecular environment was probed in situ using a combination of three novel high-pressure techniques: X-ray diffraction, magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy. We report the first direct evidence that the expansion of montmorillonite under scCO(2) conditions is due to CO(2) migration into the interlayer. Intercalated CO(2) molecules are rotationally constrained and do not appear to react with waters to form bicarbonate or carbonic acid. In contrast, CO(2) does not intercalate into kaolinite. The findings show that predicting the seal integrity of caprock will have complex dependence on clay mineralogy and hydration state.  相似文献

The solubility of CaSO3·1/2H2O(c) was studied under alkaline conditions (pH>8.2), in deaerated and deoxygenated Na2SO3 solutions ranging in concentration from 0.0002 to 0.4M and in CaCl2 solutions ranging in concentration from 0.0002 to 0.01M, for equilibration periods ranging from 1 to 7 days. Equilibrium was approached from both the over- and the under-saturation directions. In all cases, equilibrium was reached in <1 days. The aqueous Ca2+–SO 3 2– ion interactions can be satisfactorily modeled using either ion-association or ion-interaction aqueous thermodynamic models. In the ion-association model, the log K°=2.62±0.07 for Ca2++SO 3 2– CaSO 3 0 . In the Pitzer ion-interaction model, the binary parameters (0) and (1) for Ca2+–SO 4 2– were used, and the value of (2) was determined from the experimental data. As expected given the strong association constant, the value of (0) was quite small (about –134). We feel a combination of the two models is most useful. The logarithm of the thermodynamic equilibrium constant (K°) of the CaSO3·1/2H2O(c) solubility reaction (CaSO3·1/2H2O(c)Ca2++SO 3 2+ +0.5H2O) was found to be –6.64±0.07.  相似文献
