The use of baculoviruses as expression vectors

The use of recombinant baculoviruses as high level expression systems is becoming more and more popular. This review aims to provide a summary of the impact of this expression system in biochemistry and biotechnology, highlighting important advances that have been made utilizing the system. The potential of newly developed multiple baculovirus expression systems to enable the reconstruction of complex biological molecules and processes is also reviewed.     

Hair as an indicator of environmental exposure in Hong Kong

Eleven human hair samples were taken from the Chinese residents of Hong Kong for the study of hair trace elemental level and environmental exposures. Absolute neutron activation analysis and Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectrometry were applied in the determination of the trace elemental level. All results are reported in parts per million except for sulfur and oxygen which are reported in percent. The trace element content of hair from a drug addict was found to be considerably different from other sampled people. Comparison of the normal concentrations of the trace elements of the Chinese residents of Hong Kong was made with those from people of various other national, socio-cultural and environmental backgrounds. It was found that together with a few other trace elements, Ni, Sr, Zr and Hg content of the Chinese Residents of Hong Kong show a higher level than those of the other sampled people.     

Determination of thorium and uranium at the nanogram per gram level in semiconductor potting plastics by neutron activation analysis

A method was developed to determine thorium and uranium in semiconductor potting plastics. The method is based on neutron activation and subsequent radiochemical separation to isolate and permit measurement of the daughter products²³³Pa and²³⁹Np of the induced²³³Th and²³⁹U. These plastics typically contain macro amounts of silicon, bromine and antimony and nanogram per gram amounts of thorium and uranium. The radiochemical method provides the necessary sensitivity and makes it possible to easily attain adequate decontamination of the tiny amounts of²³³Pa and²³⁹Np from the high levels of radioactive bromine and antimony.Deceased     

Continuous Production of Thermostable α-Amylase by Immobilized Bacillus Cells in a Fluidized-Bed Reactor

The exponential cells ofBacillus cereus immobilized in calcium alginate and spun into microcylindrical particles were used in a fluidized-bed reactor for continuous synthesis of thermostable α-amylase. The reactor was operated over a period of 30 d with a dilution rate of 0.33 h^-1, producing 1000–1200 U/mL of enzyme. The productivity of the reactor was in the range of 330–396 kU/h. A 20-fold increase in the productivity with respect to batch fermentation with free cells was attained.     

NMR characterization of new 10-membered-ring macrolactones and dihydrobenzophenazine-5-one, oxidized derivatives of benzo[a]phenazines

Peroxidation of the phenazine of beta-lapachone using m-ClC6H4CO3H-CH2Cl2 furnished a macrolactone with a rigid 10-membered ring, and the corresponding N-oxide, along with a dihydrobenzophenazine-5-one. All of the new compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods, with the unambiguous assignment of the hydrogens and carbon NMR signals for the N-oxide, with the aid of 2-D NMR, mainly COSY, HMQC, HSQC and HMBC. For the other two compounds some signals could not be assigned owing to their own intrinsic features.
