Large-volume stacking in capillary electrophoresis using pH hysteresis of the electroosmotic flow in a bare fused-silica capillary

For large-volume stacking with the electroosmotic flow pump (LVSEP) in capillary electrophoresis of anionic analytes it is required that the electroosmotic mobility (EOM) should be smaller than the magnitudes of the effective mobilities of the analytes. When a fused-silica capillary is treated with an acidic solution, the silanoate group on the silica surface is neutralized to silanol and the EOM is suppressed. Due to the slow deprotonation equilibrium of the silanol group at an intermediate pH, this reduced EOM can be retained during a number of electrophoresis runs. Using a bare fused-silica capillary preconditioned with 0.01 M HCl, successful LVSEP at pH 6.0 was achieved for weakly acidic compounds with two orders of magnitude enhancements in the concentration sensitivity. The repeatability in migration times of ten analytes stacked by LVSEP in a single day was excellent with the relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 1% (n = 6). The day-to-day repeatability was also excellent with RSD less than 3% (n = 3 x 6) when the capillary was preconditioned each day.     

Amino acid recognition of pyridine bis(oxazoline)-copper(II) complex in aqueous solvent

Enantioselective recognition of amino acids has been studied with C₂-symmetric chiral pyridine bis(oxazoline)-copper(II) complexes at physiological pH condition. UV-visible titration revealed strong binding of submillimolar dissociation constant between pyridine bis(oxazoline)-copper(II) complex and amino acids in aqueous solution. Moderate selectivity of up to 2:1 between d- and l-amino acids was achieved. The enantiomers were baseline resolved by capillary electrophoresis, using the bis(l-lysine)-copper(II) complex as a chiral selector.     

Synthesis of highly enantioenriched all-carbon quaternary centers: conjugate additions of chiral organolithium nucleophiles to alpha,alpha-dinitrile beta,beta-disubstituted olefins

Highly enantioenriched quaternary centers are obtained by the reaction of chiral lithiated intermediates complexed to (-)-sparteine with tetrasubstituted, alpha,alpha-dinitrile activated olefins. Lithiated N-Boc-N-Aryl benzylamine furnishes products with drs from 78:22 to 95:5, with ers exceeding 94:6. Lithiated N-Boc-N-Aryl allylamine reactants provide enecarbamate products with drs from 55:45 to 99:1, with ers ranging from 87:13 to 97:3.     

A new and convenient synthesis of N-substituted perhydroazepines from adipaldehyde and primary amines with tetracarbonylhydridoferrate,HFe(CO), as a selective reducing agent

Ethanolic tetracarbonylhydridoferrate combined with adipaldehyde is very efficient for the selective transformation of an amino group into perhydroazepine. A large variety of both aliphatic and aromatic amines react with adipaldehyde in the presence of tetracarbonylhydridoferrate at room temperature and carbon monoxide to give the corresponding N-alkyl- and N-arylperhydroazepines in good to excellent yields.     

New synthesis of 3′-deoxypurine nucleosides using samarium(III) iodide complex

Regio- and stereoselective iodinative cleavage of 2′,3′-anhydropurine nucleosides was achieved with samarium diiodide and ethyl bromoacetate to produce the corresponding 3′-iodopurine nucleosides, which were then converted to 3′-deoxypurine nucleosides including the natural product cordycepin.     

Spin—rotational relaxation study of molecular reorientation in the presence of internal extended rotational diffusion

Molecular reorientation in the presence of internal rotation is investigated and an analytical expression for the spin—rotational rate of a nucleus attached to the internal rotor is obtained in terms of the internal angular-momentum correlation time. A model of a symmetric-top molecule undergoing anisotropic rotational diffusion is extended to include a modified extended diffusion of internal rotation. The result is applied to liquid toluene and the internal angular-momentum correlation time is evaluated from the ¹³C nuclear spin—rotational relaxation rate of the methyl carbon. A comparison with the previous result on the dipole—dipole relaxation data is made and the consistency of the present theory is discussed.     

Capillary electrophoresis of trace metals in highly saline physiological sample matrices

Trace metal ions in highly saline samples such as urine were determined with capillary electrophoresis (CE) without desalting or off-line preconcentration. By mixing with a dye, 4-(2-pyridylazo) resorcinol (PAR), the metal ions were converted into anionic complexes having strong absorbance near 500 nm. A large volume of the metal-PAR complex sample solution injected into a coated capillary was stacked isotachophoretically and separated under a reverse potential. The salt anion (chloride) and PAR in the sample matrix acted as the leading and terminating electrolytes, respectively. In a sample containing a 250 mM NaCl matrix, more than 400-fold enhancement in the absorbance detector response was realized compared to the normal CE injection mode. Combination of the dye complexation and isotachophoretic stacking provided excellent detection limits (S/N = 3) for three trace metal ions in the low ppb range (Fe(2+), 0.7 ppb, Ni(2+), 0.4 ppb; Zn(2+), 1.2 ppb) with absorbance detection. The migration time reproducibility was excellent (relative standard deviations: standard samples < 1%, urine samples approximately 1%). The proposed method is convenient and fast, and the sample analysis can be completed within 20 min.     

Dimesogenic liquid crystal consisting of cholesterol and Schiff base moieties: dependence of LC properties on the spacer length and fluorination of the alkoxy tails

The liquid crystalline properties of two series of non‐symmetric liquid crystal dimers consisting of cholesterol and Schiff base moieties interconnected by ω‐oxyalkanoyl spacers of varying length are compared: one series (SBOC‐ n ) carry the octyloxy tail on the Schiff base mesogen, and the other (SBOF‐ n ) a perfluoroheptylmethyloxy tail. In general, compounds with the fluorinated alkoxy tail exhibited mesophases over a much wider temperature range than those with the alkoxy tail. The latter series favoured the formation of more diverse mesophases than the former. SBOC‐4, ‐5 and ‐7, and SBOF‐4, ‐5 and ‐10 formed the chiral smectic C phase.
