X-ray fluorescence in some rare earth and high Z elements excited by 661.6 keV γ-rays

The K-shell X-ray fluorescence cross sections are determined experimentally for 10 elements such as Pb, Hg, Ir, W, Lu, Tm, Dy, Tb, Gd and Nd at excitation energy of 661.6 keV associated with γ-rays of ¹³⁷Cs radioisotope. The technique employed involves the measurement of total intensity of fluorescent K X-rays that follow the photoeffect absorption of a known flux of γ-rays using a well type Nal(Tl) detector. The obtained results are compared with the available theoretical values and other measured values.     

Spontaneous polarization buildup in a room-temperature polariton laser

We observe the buildup of strong (approximately 50%) spontaneous vector polarization in emission from a GaN-based polariton laser excited by short optical pulses at room temperature. The Stokes vector of emitted light changes its orientation randomly from one excitation pulse to another, so that the time-integrated polarization remains zero. This behavior is completely different from any previous laser. We interpret this observation in terms of the spontaneous symmetry breaking in a Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons.     

The long memory HEAVY process: modeling and forecasting financial volatility

This paper studies the bivariate HEAVY system of volatility regression equations and its various extensions that are directly applicable to the day-to-day business treasury operations of trading in foreign exchange and commodities, investing in bond and stock markets, hedging out market risk, and capital budgeting. We enrich the HEAVY framework with powers, asymmetries, and long memory that improve its forecasting accuracy significantly. Other findings are as follows. First, hyperbolic memory fits the realized measure better, whereas fractional integration is more suitable for the powered returns. Second, the structural breaks applied to the bivariate system capture the time-varying behavior of the parameters, in particular during and after the global financial crisis of 2007/2008.

     

Rapid genotyping of CYP2D6, CYP2C19 and TPMT polymorphisms by primer extension reaction in a dipstick format

In recent years an increasing amount of interest has been directed at the study and routine testing of polymorphisms responsible for variations in drug metabolism. Most of the current methods involve either time-consuming electrophoresis steps or specialized and expensive equipment. In this context, we have developed a rapid, simple and robust method for genotyping of CYP2D6*3, CYP2D6*4, CYP2C19*2, CYP2C19*3 and TPMT*2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). Genomic DNA is isolated from whole blood and the segments that span the SNP of interest are amplified by PCR. The products are subjected directly (without purification) to two primer extension (PEXT) reactions (three cycles each) using normal and mutant primers in the presence of biotin-dUTP. The PEXT primers contain a (dA)₃₀ segment at the 5′ end. The PEXT products are detected visually by a dry-reagent dipstick-type assay in which the biotinylated extension products are captured from immobilized streptavidin on the test zone of the strip and detected by hybridization with oligo(dT)-functionalized gold nanoparticles. Patient samples (76 variants in total) were genotyped and the results were fully concordant with those obtained by direct DNA sequencing.
