Visual spatial memory is enhanced in female rats (but inhibited in males) by dietary soy phytoestrogens

Background  

In learning and memory tasks, requiring visual spatial memory (VSM), males exhibit superior performance to females (a difference attributed to the hormonal influence of estrogen). This study examined the influence of phytoestrogens (estrogen-like plant compounds) on VSM, utilizing radial arm-maze methods to examine varying aspects of memory. Additionally, brain phytoestrogen, calbindin (CALB), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels were determined.     

A comprehensive dynamic model for class-1 tensegrity systems based on quaternions

In this paper we propose a new dynamic model, based on quaternions, for tensegrity systems of class-1. Quaternions are used to represent orientations of a rigid body in the 3-dimensional space eliminating the problem of singularities. Moreover, the equations based on quaternions allow to perform more precise calculations and simulations because they do not use trigonometric functions for the representation of angles. We present a thorough introduction of tensegrities and the current state of research. We also introduce the quaternions and provide in the appendix some important details and useful properties. Applying the Euler–Lagrange approach we derive a comprehensive dynamic model, first for a simple rigid bar in the space and, at last, for a class-1 tensegrity system. We present two model forms: a matrix and a vectorial form. The first more compact and easier to write, the latter more suitable to apply the tools and the theory based on vector fields.     

The application of homotopy analysis method to solve nonlinear differential equation governing Jeffery–Hamel flow

In this paper Jeffery–Hamel flow has been studied and its nonlinear ordinary differential equation has been solved through homotopy analysis method (HAM). The obtained solution in comparison with the numerical ones represents a remarkable accuracy. The results also indicate that HAM can provide us with a convenient way to control and adjust the convergence region.     

Neuromodulation by soy diets or equol: Anti-depressive &; anti-obesity-like influences,age- &; hormone-dependent effects

Background  

Soy-derived isoflavones potentially protect against obesity and depression. In five different studies we examined the influence of soy-containing diets or equol injections on depression, serotonin levels, body weight gain (BW) and white adipose tissue (WAT) deposition in female Long-Evans rats at various stages of life [rats were intact, ovariectomized or experienced natural ovarian failure (NOF)].     

Substituted potassium internal vinyltrifluoroborates: preparation and use in Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reactions

A collection of substituted potassium internal vinyltrifluoroborates was prepared and utilized in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with aryl and heteroaryl halides. The cross-coupling reactions proceeded readily with Pd(PPh₃)₄ as a catalyst in toluene/H₂O under reflux in the presence of Cs₂CO₃. The process is regiospecific with regard to the internal vinyltrifluoroborate starting material and tolerates a variety of functional groups. This unique collection of substituted internal vinyltrifluoroborates can be readily utilized in research pharmaceutical applications.
